A great big list of products that are cheaper but just as fab versions of their expensive counterparts.

Hello,
I just discovered that Baylis and Harding Handwash (Mandarin and Grapefruit) smells EXACTLY like Molton and Brown and is a fraction of the price (£1.93 for 500ml in Sainsbury's compared to £14 for 300ml Molton Brown).

Having already shared in Chat - I just thought starting a thread in Products where we could list all the things we discovered that are just as fab (and cheaper) than the posh versions and save us money.

(If this thread takes off Thandeka thinks definitive proof that Mumsnet is firmly middle class and not upper middle class/upperclass as per other debate!) If it doesn't- then it's just me the happy cheapskate.

I'll be picking some of that up the next time I am in Sainsbury's, Thandeka - thanks!

I will think about cheaper options and see if I can come up with any more for your thread.

Or less posh, because we don't buy the expensive stuff in the first place in order to realise that it's just like the cheaper stuff...

CybilLiberty · 27/07/2009 10:16

Boots Time Delay Cleansing balm (£6ish) is a copy of Eve Lom Cleanser (£50). I know because I was mug enough to buy the expensive one first of all.

PortAndLemon · 27/07/2009 10:20

kazbeth -- this thread?

(Liz Earle has the extra "e" at the end, which may be why you didn't find it)

(For purposes of record on this thread, slackrunner was recommending Tesco's BNatural Organic Cleanser (£3.97) as an alternative to Liz Earle's Cleanse and Polish)

Furball · 27/07/2009 10:29

kazbeth - it was said tesco b organic cleanser is like liz earle cleanse and polish

unscented washing powder:

Waitrose own brand (pink) rather than Surcare (only supermarket that does own brand unscented washing powder)

KingRolo · 27/07/2009 10:45

Think my suggestion might be too cheapskate for this thread.

Sainsbury's own brand toilet roll - £1.20ish for 12 rolls. Just as good as anything else and you can spend the money you save - in our house that's almost a fiver a fortnight - on handwash.

DH hasn't even noticed I've stopped buying Andrex Aloe Vera.

LIZS · 27/07/2009 10:47

White vinegar for all sorts of branded cleaners

hercules1 · 27/07/2009 10:55

I've been using the tesco one after that thread however it seems tesco have stopped doing it and I've only a little bit left...

friendly · 27/07/2009 12:05

Ooh Thandeka I stumbled across Baylis and Harding handwash too. Amazing. It was £1 In Asda a few months ago. I was going to post about it but wanted to buy a large supply first before I did in case there was a mad rush on the stuff like the Waitrose Baby bottom cream!

BadgersArse · 27/07/2009 12:07

most of the tesco bnatural stuff is a copy( and pretty accurate) of liz earl

aslo the marks eye make up remover is almost as good as lancome bifacil but a little bit greasier

TrinityRhinoIsInDetention · 27/07/2009 12:11

I'm not posh but I am obvioulsy also a smelly, uncouth/no style person cause I have no clue about these things you speak of

liz earle, molton brown???

GetOrfMoiLand · 27/07/2009 12:14

Random, I know, but Tesco Value Tortilla Chips are the nicest tortilla chips ever and are only 19p a packet.

I use also Boots Cucumber Radiance Balm, which at about £2 has the exact same effect at Beauty Flash Balm by Clarins.

Tesco Make Up Cream Blush has a better texture than Nars The Multiple, unbelieveable but true.

TrinityRhinoIsInDetention · 27/07/2009 12:16

I totally second the tortilla chips being fab

bran · 27/07/2009 12:17

Sweet orange cleansing cream from Akamuti is a cheaper alternative to other oil/wax based cleansers like Eve Lom. It's fab too, it has really calmed my dry, easily-irritated skin.

cocolepew · 27/07/2009 12:18

Asda conditioner for Brunettes is as good as John Frieda and smells absolutely gorgeous.

MarthaFarquhar · 27/07/2009 12:19

yy to Tortilla Chips

also tesco blue stripey unsalted butter is v.good quality

and Waitrose Cerveza is a perfect copy of Sol Beer

MerlinsBeard · 27/07/2009 12:22

Virgin Vie to a thing called Midas which is £5 and is the same as Touche Eclait

cocolepew · 27/07/2009 12:22

Asda and Tesco cheap beer is the same as Kronenbourg 1664

GetOrfMoiLand · 27/07/2009 12:25

I also buy the Tesco or Sainsbos basics garlic bread, and just cover it with cheese prior to baking it.

Also, Sainsbury's Basics smoked back bacon - basically bacon scraps, so the size of the pieces are all over the place, however the flavour is very good, ideal for sandwiches or cooking with.

there is an Aldi night cream which came out tops in all the polls alongside mega expensive creams.

A friend gave me some and honestly it is fab. Round glass pot with blue lid, and only a couple of quid. Would recommend.
