Is there right and wrong poems to compare to, this has me a bit worried now

No. The mark schemes do not specify.

Some won't work but as well but there are no "right" pairs.

StarShipControl · 20/05/2024 21:27

Ds said he compared it to Storm on the Island as that poem is a metaphor for war.

Countrylife2002 · 21/05/2024 06:09

German writing today! Then that’s another subject done ✔️

bluefineliner · 21/05/2024 06:15

Couldn't update yesterday but did read all your comments which was comforting. DD had a good Eng lit exam yesterday thank goodness.

German writing paper today like you @Countrylife2002 , the end of another subject! She does love German though and feels confident about the other 3 parts so just hoping she finishes on the same note.

Then home asap to cram for physics tomorrow. Not sure about this one, she has always done well but don't think she's revised this as much because of it, so we will see how the paper is. Only saving grace is it is not an A level subject for her.

Good luck to all taking exams today.

Same here. German writing this morning - much less stressful than the speaking exam. Then some last-minute revision for (much neglected) Physics. Then winding down to last exam of the week on Thursday - English Language, which DS is feeling relatively relaxed about. Then finally a much needed half term break. The stress is really getting to him and I cannot wait for it all to be over

English lit all done. Notes all gone in the bin and never has to be done again. WJEC here. The LOTF q wasn't good but J&H and unseen poetry ok. He won't get a great grade as he's just not into it. Comp sci today which has been neglected in favour.of physics revision as that's an A level choice. 3 tomorrow, physics, Spanish and PE. The marathon continues.at least he has no exams on Thursday.

LighthouseCat · 21/05/2024 07:27

Study day, cramming Physics. Her first English lit paper was a disaster (her words) and despite yesterday's paper going quite well, she's now thinking maybe A-level English isn't for her. I think the English exams are brutal! You fluff one question/essay and that's a huge proportion of marks gone. Good luck to all DC with exams today!

DramaLlamaBangBang · 21/05/2024 07:40

Curlyshabtree · 20/05/2024 19:00

My dts compared with Poppies too. Dts chose War Photographer. As a pp said as long as you can back it with quotes then I think you’re ok.

If I was doing the essay, I would have compared it to War photographer. I think they seem more related to the question, but I'm relieved that so many chose Remains, as that's what DS did.
I know people hate the poetry ( me included) but I've long had a hankering to do an English Lit or creative writing masters just for fun when I retire, and those poems have really stuck with me. I really want to do it now, but I haven't got time.

StarShipControl · 21/05/2024 07:41

Computer science today. Worst subject for ds.
It's annoying it's in the afternoon as he really needs to get going with physics revision.

@Bobbybobbins any idea why today's AQA English Lit exam was 2023's back-up paper? Hopefully they explained that to all the kids because seeing 2023 written on the exam could be very distracting. The kids on Reddit said it was due to a leak but probably not true. I haven't mentioned anything to DD because she has moved on to CS revision

The paper was leaked. My DS was sent a copy on Sunday night by his friend so it was doing the rounds. He had already revised and he told me straight away. I wasn’t impressed by this and told him not to look at it and warned it was probably a fake anyway.

The exam board obviously found out about the leak and switched the papers. I do wonder how it happens at all though?

Oh wow really? I'll have to ask DS the gossip when he gets home.

Mcvitieschoccybiscuit · 21/05/2024 08:14

Oh god imagine thinking over the weekend you knew what was on the paper and sitting down Monday morning and it being a totally different exam.

More fool you if you rely on that to be honest. Never assume. Not even that last years exam question won’t come up again.

MonkeyTennis34 · 21/05/2024 08:26

DD so pleased to get Eng Lit out of the way!

She said she's going to predict her grades and predicts a 6/7 for Eng Lit.

Not sure how her predictions will pan out, although DS1 predicted his A level grades 100% correctly!

I phoned in sick for her this morning so she could study at home. Didn't feel great about it.
She's on study leave after half term.

ohdearohdearoh · 21/05/2024 08:47

@LadyAroundTown do you know poem was featured in the leaked paper? DS was sure it was going to be Checkin out me history - interested to see if he was right!

There was also a rumour that the paper 1 macbeth was going to be on ' kingship' but it wasn't, so really I think either assume people trying to get traffic to their sites on tiktok are lying, or assume ( probably correctly) that exam boards are monitoring social media and will pull any leaked paper. If kids can find the paper online you can bet exam boards can.

DippyDoo98 · 21/05/2024 08:49

I phoned in sick for my daughter as well! Felt really guilty when they said she was missing a revision lesson after school but I know she’ll have a more productive day at home and have some r&r as well.
she compared the poem for AQA power and conflict to the Emigree… haven’t heard anyone else doing this! She’s spoken confidently about it so fingers crossed she’s not gone off piste! 🙈😊

LighthouseCat · 21/05/2024 08:53

@DippyDoo98 Emigree here too! Think it was solid choice hopefully 🤞

Team Emigree! Feel an amazing sense of relief- think I’m far too involved in this process! Not even sure my parents knew I was doing my exams 😊🤣

Waspie · 21/05/2024 09:24

It does sound like that @GlomOfNit ! DS did AQA English. Mandarin is AQA too. Psychology is OCR. He enjoys mandarin but I wish he'd chosen French or Spanish as we might have been of some small use during revision at least. How is your son finding these exams so far?

I have reported my son in sick today too. He is going to study physics with his dad this morning and I'll supervise some mandarin later. Perhaps a physics recap this evening depending on how he's feeling about it.

Good luck to those with exams today!

steppemum · 21/05/2024 09:25

Computer Science this afternoon.
Ddd went in feeling confident. This part of CS she really likes (coding etc).
She did really badly on the first paper as it is the part she doesn't like.

There is one topic that she is hoping doesn't come up, as she self taught it on Friday for the first time. yes dd, that is what happens when you miss half your lessons between Christmas and Easter.😣

She's wanting to do it for A level, so I'm hoping today goes well. I am not sure of the wisdom of doing a subject for A level when you can't do one of the exams, but there we go.

We were wondering this too.

Stoufer · 21/05/2024 09:59

Does anyone have access to the Eng Lit paper 2 paper that was sat yesterday? I’m interested in finding out the actual wording of the poetry anthology comparison question (Power and Conflict) - as am wondering if it was ambiguous, or not explicit enough, for those who may, e.g. have ASD, and who comprehend things quite literally.

ouch44 · 21/05/2024 10:00

It wasn’t a leaked paper. Someone posted further up a statement from AQA from 1st May that they would be doing it to reduce their carbon footprint! DD said she wasn’t told and didn’t notice!

My two are both on study leave and have been for a couple of weeks. Doing GCSEs and Alevels. They are night owls so revise till late it wouldn’t work if they were going into school too. V glad about that!
