For when the other thread fills up tomorrow as we all discuss English lit 2 😁

Eng lit was apparently "good questions but ran out of time"... At least that's English Lit all done.

Panic71 · 20/05/2024 18:25

AQA here
Son a bit flat. He wrote about the impact of war on the pilot and compared this to remains etc but for 30 marks he worried he didn’t write enough.

BestsellingWine · 20/05/2024 18:35

Ds is one of small minority who didn’t compare it to Remains which has me slightly worried!

Countrylife2002 · 20/05/2024 18:37

@BestsellingWine dd used Exposure and is very confident on that!

DD didn't use Remains either, I think she said Poppies. As long as they can justify along with quotes, I'm sure they'll be fine. My English/Lit was 100% coursework so I have no idea of what they've had to do and have stayed out of it as I can't really add anything if any use for them!

Lalux · 20/05/2024 18:51

DS seemed quite happy with it which is positive as his least favourite subject but maybe it's the relief of not having to go near it again! 1 exam every day for him this week. CS tomorrow and then that's 3 subjects completed.

GlomOfNit · 20/05/2024 18:56

Waspie · 20/05/2024 14:00

@Zubomama - I'm glad your son found paper 2 much better than paper 1. Sounds like it's been a difficult time for you all in the past months. What are your son's plans for sixth form?

DS was AQA and he also compared Kamikaze to Remains. He was happy with that - two poems he knew well. He wasn't overly happy with the unseen poem and said he started to struggle with time towards the end. He said AIC could have been better as he'd usually do the theme question but today's exam was two characters. He hasn't enjoyed AIC because - in his words - all the characters are horrible and it's so preachy. I do have sympathy with this.

DS has nothing tomorrow then Physics P1 and Mandarin writing on Wednesday. English Language and Psychology on Thursday. By half term English Lit, psychology and mandarin will be completely over with.

Waspie I think our sons must be doing more or less the same things as that's DS's exam timetable this week too. And yes, by half term ALL of Eng Lit, Psych and Mandarin will be done.

How did he find the English today? DS is edexcel and is cursing the poetry selection today!

Curlyshabtree · 20/05/2024 19:00

My dts compared with Poppies too. Dts chose War Photographer. As a pp said as long as you can back it with quotes then I think you’re ok.

Rumplestiltz · 20/05/2024 19:06

Yes ds compared it with exposure too

CactusPeach · 20/05/2024 19:16

Dd said English and media studies today were fine, she seemed happy anyway and very happily gave her English revision books to Ds who is year 10 😂

@Panarycatty oh no that's so frustrating for your child, have the school said what will happen?

@imtiredandiwanttogotobed My Dd had English followed by media studies too.

DoThePropeller · 20/05/2024 19:22

Checking in here, English Lit seemed ok with the unseen poetry being “the worst”.

imtiredandiwanttogotobed · 20/05/2024 19:26

Another one who compared to Poppies not remains!

GroceriesHelp · 20/05/2024 19:27

My dd compared it to checking out me history - hopefully she explained it!

rattlertattler · 20/05/2024 19:28

DS says he compared to Prelude which no one else has mentioned yet Confused

rattlertattler · 20/05/2024 19:29

Is there right and wrong poems to compare to, this has me a bit worried now

DramaLlamaBangBang · 20/05/2024 19:34

@rattlertattler I don't think there are as long as you can explain in relation to the question. The question was about other peoples reactions to war, I think.

Rumplestiltz · 20/05/2024 19:39

@rattlertattler There’s no right or wrong as long as you are answering the question, which I think was the way in which conflict affects people. Prelude is more about power of nature, but he might have had a great interpretation for the meaning of conflict!
when my ds with asd sat this exam two years ago he answered the question on both anthologies, including the one he hadn’t studied (mum why didn’t you go through those poems with me?…) so frankly anything is an improvement from that experience. I made doubly sure ds2 knew not to answer questions on book and poems he hadn’t studied this time round 😂

Bobbybobbins · 20/05/2024 20:00

My year 11s compared the given poem to about 6 others between them - variety is the spice of life after all!

ouch44 · 20/05/2024 20:11

@Bobbybobbins any idea why today's AQA English Lit exam was 2023's back-up paper? Hopefully they explained that to all the kids because seeing 2023 written on the exam could be very distracting. The kids on Reddit said it was due to a leak but probably not true. I haven't mentioned anything to DD because she has moved on to CS revision

Bobbybobbins · 20/05/2024 20:15

@ouch44 oh I didn't know! None of mine mentioned it, how bizarre! Will have a good look when we are allowed to see the paper tomorrow.....

boredwithfoodprob · 20/05/2024 20:22

Interesting how everyone's kids on here seem to have studied Power & Conflict poetry. The other option for the anthology was Love & Relationships - there were some lovely poems but my DS finds it hard as a subject especially memorising all the quotes. We were up late last night when he finally gave in and let me help him - I have an English lit degree but he hasn't wanted help at all so far which i find frustrating. Anyway, when he came home today he told me the exam went well and he really appreciated the help - finally!

MamOfTwo · 20/05/2024 20:53

Checking in - my DD did Love & Relationships and was delighted 'Neutral Tones' came up, compared it to 'When We Two Parted' ( I think). Also pleased with AIC question as wanted one about Inspector or social change. Getting less confident about the stuff she wrote for unseen as evening goes on but have told her to put it out of her head.

I didn't actually think she'd get through the exam as she had horrendous period pain this morning. Think she mentioned it to an invigilator beforehand but not sure if they will have made a note or anything.

Sociology tomorrow.

@Techno56

Just reading about it on a teachers' forum. Seems AQA are suggesting they reused the reserve from last year for sustainability reasons as that paper remained secure...

Yes my DS was happy too that neutral tones came up - we had gone through it in some detail last night - it's a nice straightforward one. I can't remember what he compared it to but it sounded ok.

Hope your DD is feeling better for tomorrow. Feeling rubbish in an exam is awful 😞 Especially such a long one like that was!
