A blessed exam free day here. We were able to have an extra 15 mins in bed too, as we didn't need to leave early to get to exam briefing.

Then the dreaded physics tomorrow, Eng Lang on Thursday and French on Friday.

Art, French, Eng Lit can then be completely forgotten about. I'll be thrilled to be able to throw at least some of the mountain of notes, books, revision cards, flash cards etc.

School are putting on booster sessions in half term.

And then DD is supposed to be on study leave, but she's choosing to go in as she prefers the structure.

Waspie · 21/05/2024 10:12

They don't normally release them stoufer - they often to use the previous year's paper as the following year's mock so they don't want it published.

Countrylife2002 · 21/05/2024 10:15

Blimey they must have started early as I got a message about ten mins ago to say German was great! That was quick it feels like she’s only just left the house !

Thanks. I am a bit worried that the question may not have been explicit enough..

I think it was quite a short exam.
Glad it went well for you DC. Will hear from DS later how it was for him. On now to Physics - weakest subject and one which he has done least revision for.

GlomOfNit · 21/05/2024 11:07

Waspie · 21/05/2024 09:24

It does sound like that @GlomOfNit ! DS did AQA English. Mandarin is AQA too. Psychology is OCR. He enjoys mandarin but I wish he'd chosen French or Spanish as we might have been of some small use during revision at least. How is your son finding these exams so far?

I have reported my son in sick today too. He is going to study physics with his dad this morning and I'll supervise some mandarin later. Perhaps a physics recap this evening depending on how he's feeling about it.

Good luck to those with exams today!

Ah, different boards then. English, Psych and Mandarin all Edexcel here - I'm quite surprised there's more than one board for Mandarin. I do sort of wish he'd done a European language too as we could help a bit, plus he's probably likely to use it more! Main draw was the year 8 trip to China - which, being in 2021, didn't happen ...

ohdearohdearoh · 21/05/2024 08:47

@LadyAroundTown do you know poem was featured in the leaked paper? DS was sure it was going to be Checkin out me history - interested to see if he was right!

I don’t know I can see later when he gets home.

Of course we don’t know if it really was the genuine paper, it could have been a fake anyway.

dinomirror · 21/05/2024 12:59

Stoufer · 21/05/2024 09:59

Does anyone have access to the Eng Lit paper 2 paper that was sat yesterday? I’m interested in finding out the actual wording of the poetry anthology comparison question (Power and Conflict) - as am wondering if it was ambiguous, or not explicit enough, for those who may, e.g. have ASD, and who comprehend things quite literally.

Search 'leak 2024 Eng lit paper 2' on Tiktok. Interesting that most papers can be found on TikTok after the exam- wasn't like this previously
For poetry it was 'Compare how poets present the ways people are affected but conflict in 'Kamikaze' and one other poem from 'Power and Conflict'

I wonder if that was a rumour going round? DS suddenly started talking about ' checking out ma history' but at least it got him to re read remains in relation to colloquialisms and place.

Ooh that's a good question! You could use any of the poems for that. I can see why so many used remains.

Thanks. I was worried by the mention of ‘other’ people upthread (as in, those not directly involved in conflict). But if it was ‘the ways people are affected’ (rather than ‘other people affected’ then that would facilitate all manner of different responses or angles, so should be okay (fingers crossed)…

Thanks for this dinomirror. I bet the exam boards aren't too happy they are being posted! I also wonder how they are posted given that they aren't allowed to take the exam paper out of the exam hall.

DS says they are warned not to talk about the papers after the exam. The June 2023 papers are not available to download from the AQA website either.

dinomirror · 21/05/2024 13:12

@Waspie by the crumpled looks of the papers it looks like students are smuggling out ones that have been unused. They aren't digital screenshots, they are photos of the physical paper

ZooblesSpringToLife · 21/05/2024 13:16

DD used London and talked about how class conflict results in the exploitation of the working class. Hoping that isn't too off the wall, although she seems happy. Horrible clash this afternoon but at least she'll have three subjects out of the way.

Thisisreallyweird · 21/05/2024 13:21

DD back from economics.
not easy at all for anyone.

How does that happen though? When I'm invigilating any papers on desks of absent candidates are picked up when 1/2 hour of exam remains (or certainly after the poly at which late comers will be admitted). I then make sure every paper once picked up at the end of exams that s checked against my register of present students before I release anyone. So there's no way (could n theory I guess) a paper can get out?

Intrigued though Grin

dinomirror · 21/05/2024 13:27

I dont think that happens in dds school tbh. 270 + kids in a hall- very hard to keep track

I’ve invigilated with 300 kids in the hall, and we did as tellmewherethespaceshiplands describes.

It's in the rules that they have to account for every exam paper. Even teachers can't take them out. There is an exact number of papers for each child entered into each exam.. No one is allowed to leave until every paper is picked up, and there is a ratio of staff to pupil. If the school isn't running the exam properly, they could lose their licence to run exams, which would be a disaster. These things aren't just thrown together anymore. I think I've said on here I had to do invigilation training for my job. It was 5 hours long!

That was me that said thst! It worried me too, but if it's just about ' people' then Remains fits in fine.

steppemum · 21/05/2024 13:45

ds1 is doing uni finals as of yesterday, so I have 2 to worry about now.

text from him after today's exams to say its going OK.

I won't hear from him now probably til he is done!!

GlomOfNit
That's too bad re the China trip.
DS2 (now in Y12) didn't have a single trip in secondary school because of Covid.
He was booked to go skiing and a bushcraft trip.

DD managed to go to Seville last September.

My ds is now 21, but was booked onto his only secondary school trip to Cerne in sixth form and missed it.
dd1 got a Germany trip in before Covid in year 8.
dd2 (doing GCSEs now) didn't get any trips at all. The only relevant ones were in year 7 and 8 which were her Covid years.
It's a real shame.

Gazelda · 21/05/2024 14:49

DD did a geography field trip in Y7, which was at the river across the road from school!

She didn't fancy the Y7 ski trip which took place Feb half term 2020 and half the group returned with Covid and lockdown swiftly followed.

No other trips because they are all scheduled in Y7,8,9 which were affected by pandemic.

But at least that's given us time to save up for the (likely) biggie to Washington in Y12.
