I'm a bit over-invested in these exams. I ended up having a row with DH last night after DS had gone to bed, about me not heeding DS being tired (he'd asked me to take him through History exam technique/structure, so I wasn't imposing my will on him or anything) and generally being a bit overbearing. I AM being a bit full-on and I hate myself for it! I just want him to be happy with his final marks. Anyway, I suggested that DH take over any help that DS asks for, for the next couple of days, and I'm stepping back a bit.

Sounds familiar....

If DH sees DD not revising he gets very stressed with her that she's not putting enough effort in. She then gets agitated and so it goes on.
I think he wants her to be studying unless she's asleep!

I've been trying to adopt a more measured approach. I gently encourage her and praise her when I see her studying.
She dies t need to break her back, so long as she gets her requisite grades for 6th form, all will be well 🙏🏼

Has everyone got first Maths exam tomorrow? That's the one am most nervous about.

My DD does.
Maths is her sticking point but she's worked really hard recently on it and has been achieving 6s in past papers 🤞🏻

StarShipControl · 15/05/2024 13:44

Ds texted today history was good so fingers crossed for that promising statement to become a reality in grade terms!
Computer science now and that's his worst subject. Pretty much failed the mock

Curlyshabtree · 15/05/2024 13:45

DS had History today (Skipton Castle). His one word post exam text was “easy”.
Glad it went well for him as he loves History and has chosen it for A Level. Hope the next 2 papers are just as kind!

Waspie · 15/05/2024 14:10

DS said history was easy too and that he finished with time to spare on both papers (that was my worry) - "nice questions and easy source interpretations". Hope everyone else's student was happy with history too.

I think everyone, irrespective of board, has Maths P1 tomorrow morning and Chemistry P1 on Friday morning. What a week!

I keep offering to help DS but he doesn't want it. I feel like I should be being all helpful and supportive but he won't let me. So I come here to vent with you all Grin

DramaLlamaBangBang · 15/05/2024 14:12

Yes we have first maths tomorrow then second RE exam! Really worried about maths. That's the one he struggles with. His teacher is fab but didn't help yesterday telling them they have to get 70% on the foundation paper to get a 4! One girl in DS's class started crying, so that didn't help!

💯. Most kids aren't going to coast 10 grade 9s and have to work extremely hard to get the grades to get to their desired next level. Any help I can give, I want to give. I doubt most of the parents here are sitting there for hours every night helping with revision. I am involved, in that I'll ask how the revisions going, will look over something if he asks, and have discussed various things he's looked up, like revision techniques he's read about. That's not getting ' over involved'. It's just supporting learning. I for one am using this thread to freak out so I don't do it at home.

Agree with this completely @DramaLlamaBangBang Flowers

boredwithfoodprob · 15/05/2024 14:17

Yes Maths P1 tomorrow then Chemistry and Geography on Friday Shock
My son was moved down to Foundation Maths earlier this year due to poor Mocks. I was a little disheartened as he's good at Maths but needs to work at it.
Oh gosh - 70% to get a grade 4!! I think that was a bit mean of the teacher to say that now!!

Yes, DS did that this morning. He said it was a bit of a mixed bag but the 16 marker was good. I only realised yesterday that the topic was only introduced in 2022 and that was the only past paper we could find to look at! I have no idea what when through the school's mind when they decided to make them all sit a new topic!

My DD was doing this. She said the first question was hard and the rest not too bad. She found it so hard to revise with no past papers!

Yes I just want DS to get the points to go to his first choice sixth form. If he hadn't worked hard, at least he could say that was a lesson learnt, but he has really worked his socks off. He didnt do that well in his year 10 mocks, then really upped his revision for the Christmas mocks and pulled everything up by at least 2 grades and hadn't really stopped revising since then. I have to tell him to stop and go to bed. So if he still doesn't do enough it will really be crushing for him. It's really the maths and history that is essential. He was one mark off a 4 in his maths mock. That was gutting, but he made silly mistakes so hopefully he can pull it round. It was this non calculator paper that was the worst too.

Waspie · 15/05/2024 14:25

Just looked at 2023 grade boundaries for Maths for Edexcel and it was 76% for a grade 5 and 61% for a grade 4 on the foundation paper.

Yes I'm not sure if that's true. It seems a bit harsh when on the higher paper a grade 4 is something like 35%! I don't know if there are any maths people here eho would k ow better. DS was dropped to foundation because he go 3 then 3.9 in the mocks. His teacher thinks he can get a 4 though. The thing is, my maths is bad too, and I only learnt all my times tables a couple if years ago when I had to do a maths refresher for work. His maths is far, far better than mine was at 16 and I got a C. It's really annoying that the curriculum is so full.

Oh sorry x post. Thanks for that. So not as bad as his teacher said!

Countrylife2002 · 15/05/2024 14:33

Managed to persuade dd to do some maths first this afternoon. She had it scheduled for 8pm after RE, geography and English. I said maybe do the two for tomorrow first then worry about the others!! I really think she will zonk later too. Amazingly, she listened!

Edited

That's because on the higher paper a large percent of the questions is aimed at people getting a 7,8 and 9 so the percentage for getting a 4 is going to be lower than the foundation paper

Yeah . That's why they tried to keep the wesker students in the higher set for as long as possible at DS's school. There was an intermediate paper in my day!

dinomirror · 15/05/2024 15:21

Aqa conflict and tension and America was good according to Dd just ran out of time and panicked on the 8 marker. Hoping for at the very least a 7 but more 9. Maths, RE and Chem next

gingercat02 · 15/05/2024 15:42

Apparently, history (AQA) was a great paper, and he smashed it 🤔 He thought his mocks were a disaster and got a 6, so we shall see in August!

My son also said it went very well, Germany and Conflict, hope he’s right as he wants to do it at Alevel and needs at least a 6.

boredwithfoodprob · 15/05/2024 15:52

My DS said he thinks he did well BUT ran of time with the 16 marker at the end. I don't think he managed much at all for this question Shock I really hope he can still manage a 4/5 despite this as he said he answered every other question well. I wish I'd told him to answer the 16 marker first!

Can I ask a question? Is it easier to get a 5 (top grade) in the foundation paper or a 5 in the higher paper?

TinfoilTangerine · 15/05/2024 15:53

DS happy with AQA history. Really liked 16 marker for conflict in Asia. Not asking him anymore about it as don’t want him to start finding things he should have included and feeling less good. On now to maths tomorrow. Hope history and CS went well for everyone.
