School skirts? Why is it such an issue?

I don't have daughters and my sons are still at primary school so I don't understand why secondary school girls' skirts are such a massive issue that there are silly measuring by ruler and pupils protests and drastic school decisions to remove skirts from uniforms??

What's the solution?

That could discriminate depending on the make up of the school. Orthodox jewish women / girls wear 'modest' clothing and for them that excludes trousers.

Maybe we should go for dresses instead of skirts?

Knee length dress, abaya type dress or trousers and shirt.

@madamreign a school in my hometown announced last year they were going to go trousers only for everyone.
The students staged a protest which turned into a mini riot (police called etc).
Not the best behaviour from the children but it worked and the school changed their mind and kept the skirts.

DD 19 had a summer holiday job looking after twins going to secondary who complained to her that their mum had bought their school skirts very long. DD apparently told them that it would be perfectly acceptable to roll them up on Day 2 but that day 1 was pushing it.....

Or perhaps they should bring back the standard Angela Brazil-type straight up-and-down pleated pinny. Quite difficult to make that into a sexy short skirt!
