Calling all parents who’s ds sat the 11+ today... ds said maths was super hard and not the usual questions, he said he couldn’t finish the paper. Wondering if it was the case for the majority or he just had a bad day...

@R262727 Rough figures in my mind from the Headmaster meeting. I am happy to be corrected!.......
Taking off Hampton prep and 10+ numbers.......I had about 90 offers more at 11+.
Of those, about 30 have scholarship offers. If say 20 of those accept...then that leaves 70 places approx to be filled?

whyisthisnoteasy · 06/02/2020 07:18

R272 did you hear from the school in the end whether your DS got an interview? Looking back at the thread, you hadn’t heard after others had?

R272727 · 06/02/2020 13:19

@whyisthisnoteasy thanks! Do you know how many sat the 11+?

R272727 · 06/02/2020 13:20

@whyisthisnoteasy yes he didSmile

R272727 · 06/02/2020 13:21

@ripple11 the thanks was for you :). Do you know how many sat the 11+?

ripple11 · 06/02/2020 15:08

@R272727 again I think the ball park figure is thought to be about 650 for 11+. They were interviewing about half .
They did says numbers were tight this year, (due to less leaving in the 6th form) and therefore they couldn't offer an extra class if needed.

Tiredof11plus · 06/02/2020 15:45

Hi ripple11! So this year is even harder than usual to get a place at Hampton?

whyisthisnoteasy · 06/02/2020 16:05

Sounds about right. I did post something earlier in the thread on this.

ripple11 · 06/02/2020 16:07

@Tiredof11plus... that was the impression I got from the Headmaster's meeting, simply because in the past if they had more acceptances than they expected, then they could/would open an extra class.
By "over offering" to less boys this year, (so to speak!).... that would situation would hopefully be avoided as they just don't have any extra space this year.

Tiredof11plus · 06/02/2020 16:10

Thank you to both of you! And...oh dear...

R272727 · 06/02/2020 18:59

This makes it really bad oddsShock so 650 applied for 130 places of which around around 40 to 10+ and prep. That seems awfully high to give out to prep and 10+!! Were these numbers given by the school??

Ptarmigan68 · 06/02/2020 20:19

This is similar to last year. They said couldn’t do 6 classes again in first year. However there are 6 classes in first year now...

TaupeAndTeal · 06/02/2020 21:20

@R272727 it's not great odds but not the worst. I gather there were over 750 children applying for about 100 places at Kingston grammar school and possibly even worse odds at other schools (someone mentioned 10+ children per place somewhere - I've forgotten which school). However consider the fact that a lot of these children are the same children. Some children are sitting for 6,7,8 or so schools. It will balance out to a certain extent and hopefully the children should end up at a school that is right for them. Tough process to go through though isn't it!

Isitreallyworthit23 · 08/02/2020 09:55

We’ve just had an offer on Kew House, anyone have any feedback on the school? We loved it there as did our DS but would love to hear from any other parents experience.

Tiredof11plus · 08/02/2020 10:47

I don’t know if I want Friday to come fast or to not come at all... 🤦‍♀️😳

Isitreallyworthit23 · 08/02/2020 11:25

Which school are you waiting to hear from?

TaupeAndTeal · 08/02/2020 11:31

The clue is in the thread title @Isitreallyworthit23 🤣. The Hampton results (and many other schools') are expected on Friday.

TaupeAndTeal · 08/02/2020 11:33

So do others plan to open the envelope with their DSs or before if possible? I think DH might be working from home on Friday so could open the post on arrival, but I think our DS wants to be there when it's opened so should we wait?

1ndig0 · 08/02/2020 11:39

Taupe - it will be obvious from the size and weight if the envelope anyway, so you may as well wait for DS if it’s a large one. Or use a torch Grin

Good luck to all! I remember it well. My DS went through this some years back. We thought Hampton was fantastic, though he didn’t fancy the coach and went co-ed to LU in the end.

TaupeAndTeal · 08/02/2020 11:41

Very true 1ndig0. I think I'm overthinking it anyway. It's just been such a looong wait.

Frostyskies1223 · 08/02/2020 11:42

@TaupeAndTeal , you will have an idea from the size of the envelope. Plus if it's a yes you may want to get on and find out the date of the "open morning for offers" & book your spot & book time of work etc, it's never ending! Or if it's waiting list you can work out what you are going to do re any other option that will want payment by 3rd March.

1ndig0 · 08/02/2020 11:54

It is a long wait, but they all end up somewhere and once they’re in whatever school they’re going to, that’s that and you don’t look back.

Also, Kings accept far more now at 11 plus than they used to five years back, so this may mean more movement for Hampton. Many from Putney, Barnes etc apply to Hampton due to the very limited options for boys in this area, but they don’t really want to be tied into the coach journey for years on end if they can avoid it. So even if it’s a WL place, don’t despair, as I think there always movement.

Sosickoflovesongs · 08/02/2020 14:07

Hi all! Another anxious waiter!
I don’t mean to start a riot here (😂) but didn’t Hampton say they would email on the 13th and then follow up with a letter on the 14th? Hope I didn’t imagine that!
Good luck to all! X

Tiredof11plus · 08/02/2020 14:10

I expect that you are right, 1ndig0... There may well be some movement in the WL, but that does mean even more waiting and anxiety... You know, I would probably favor a school that offers DS a place via the main list (rather than WL), just because I really want this to be over... I naively only applied to quite competitive schools, as new in the country, and now utterly regret not having a back up... On the other hand, all schools that we are going for have excellent reputation, so DS will be a lucky boy if he is accepted in any of them. Just really really really do not want to do this all over again while he is in Year 7 or 8 if he doesn’t get a spot now...

Tiredof11plus · 08/02/2020 14:12

Ah! And we leave home in order to travel for half term at lunchtime on Friday... What if the post hasn’t arrived?!? Would have to spend another 8 or 9 days holding my breath... And what if there are “exploding offers” this year?!?
