Well that question is a way for DD to justify watching 1/2 of Love Island last might! Her big sister insisted, and a bit of trash TV is a good way to bring up all kinds of issues (some of this years contestants are seriously academic). I still remember the "Neighbours" reps at Oxford who had to produce a summary for other students who'd had to miss an episode.
After today, it's only 4 papers left!

TabbyStar · 07/06/2019 13:09

The way the question was phrased would allow you to be as snobby as you wanted to be....

bizzey · 07/06/2019 13:11

Rugbylife ..congrats !

Not sure if ds knows reality t.v ....but he has heard me moan about it enough so hopefully he will have got on soap box and done well 🤣

Poor thing has a problem with his brace and woke up with a sore mouth/jaw.
He asked for paracetamol which is unusual and took some to school.
Cant get appointment till tuesday.

He did text me ....first time ...to see if i managed to get appointment for this evening .
Said pain was ok but i have told him to take 2 more in case it starts again during exam .
Trying to teach prevention is better than cure sort of thing .

Biology soon .
Wish all his exams were "oral" as opposed to written.
He knows his stuff ...just the pathway from
Brain -hand- paper it goes wrong !!!

DeRigueurMortis · 07/06/2019 13:21

Congratulations Rugby

We've still got more next week but after today I think the worst is over as it's all subjects he likes/enjoys.

bizzey · 07/06/2019 13:48

Not sure if ds likes or enjoys any of his subjects now :(
Might be why he is thinking of doing 3 brand new ones for a level!

Michaelahpurple · 07/06/2019 14:02

*rugbylife - that is really unusual, to do so many early. Does the whole cohort do it? Which subjects? And do they still do 8 in year 11? So interesting to see how other schools do things

readyforsunshine · 07/06/2019 14:37

I’m quite pleased they’ve added a celebrity culture question. Those not interested can still write a letter giving their arguments without needing to be interested but I think for those that find it difficult to get started it will possibly have been a welcome topic to inspire them. Not wishing to pigeon hole but perhaps those kids may have had struggles with their other GCSEs & it may help them to achieve the grades they need, many are not worrying over 8s & 9s after all.

readyforsunshine · 07/06/2019 14:38

Congrats rugby life! Have a wonderful summer Smile

Iambuffy · 07/06/2019 14:43

Congrats rugby

bizzey · 07/06/2019 14:43

readyforsunshine ...i so agree !

myrtleWilson · 07/06/2019 14:49

Congratulations rugbylife

Not heard from DD yet but the famous/celebrity/usefulness question sounds right up her street - she did something similar for her spoken English piece - how female celebrities can take on societal campaigns - body image, diversity etc - so not just lets talk about Kylie and Stormi... I hope she remembered in the exam that she'd done all of that work already - knowing her she'll have remembered it half way through and then be caught in a bind about whether to start again or not Grin

readyforsunshine · 07/06/2019 14:50

It must be so soul destroying for kids to open papers & feel their heart sink when they don’t know where to start. I should guess that most on this thread are going to get through this reasonably well as they at the very least have great support from interested parents.

myrtleWilson · 07/06/2019 15:02

Completely agree ready - there are children of a whole range of abilities with different backgrounds, challenges that they are dealing with alongside their school life and we should celebrate all of their achievements.

What has been brilliant about these threads has been the mutual support we've given to each other - cheering on our DC's having a good day, and offering a supportive hand squeeze for when exams or days haven't gone as well as they could have.

The lack of academic oneupmanship on this thread is something I appreciate a great deal.

PS DD just home and she did indeed forget about her spoken English submission - doh!

Arewedone · 07/06/2019 15:03

Wow- that’s fantastic Rugby, summer starts now !
Totally agree re the celebrity question it can be applied in so many ways that makes it very inclusive.
It feels like it’s been a very long week- wishing everyone a relaxing weekend :)

Iambuffy · 07/06/2019 15:05

Thsts very true ready

Iambuffy · 07/06/2019 15:06

There are some really interesting ways you could answer that question.
Hope some of the kids had fun worg it :)

DeRigueurMortis · 07/06/2019 15:09

I've no idea how DS will have responded to the celebrity question!

I guess I'll find out soon - maybe he's a closet Kardashian fan GrinGrin(doubtful - tbh I'm racking my brains to think of someone famous he might have taken note of other than scientists Confused).

Rugbylife · 07/06/2019 15:20

All of Ds Triple science Y10 did paper 1 last year and Unit 2 of English Lit, so only 3 science papers this time unless you wanted to resit, mine said he was happy with his C’s although teachers tried to persuade him he would get higher if he resits. He says this year’s papers were the easiest he had so hoping the overall score will jump to B as his practicals were all A’s. No celebrity question on English today it was all about plastics, recycling and the effects on sea life.

bizzey · 07/06/2019 15:40

Cant wait for ds to come home and talk to me about his 'celebrity' piece.
Think it will go like this ..
M) who did you wrigjt about for the celebrity question ?

H)) Huuuh
M ) the question on celebs

H) Huuh

And repeat !!!

Iambuffy · 07/06/2019 15:53

Well, ds said both papers were "bad"

Said worse than the 1st papers and biology #2 had more questions on diabetes which he hates.

At least they are over.

Iambuffy · 07/06/2019 15:54

Eng lang was on hotels

Fibbke · 07/06/2019 15:57

Biology (trilogy-combined science) was 'good' according to dd

srilankadreaming · 07/06/2019 16:02

DD said there was quite a long question on orchids on the AQA Biology Trilogy paper 2 ? This confused her as she can't tell me what it was about. But she liked the diabetes question.
No let up though as somehow she has to learn all the Weimar Republic and Nazis for History and Chemistry paper 2 this weekend and Food and Nutrition for Mon morning. Think that will be skim read! sigh

Fibbke · 07/06/2019 16:03

What a shame he did it a year early for a C! Not sure why schools do this!

SilentSister · 07/06/2019 16:09

Day off for DD - We have been to the garden center, in the pouring rain, but I did get some nice plants for my pots, and now she is catching up with Love Island. She has her acting/signing classes tomorrow morning and then will start revising again tomorrow afternoon for the remaining 3 science papers and German paper

Happy weekend everyone x
