Eng lang and biology here today too. Dd is bright but dyslexic and dreading English, but cool as a cucumber about biology.
On a previous thread, I mentioned her distress after paper 1 eng lit, which is almost definitely a fail. She felt she did well in paper 2 but not good enough to pass overall. Paper 1 of language went really well and she was literally elated after it, but she was struggling to feel optimistic last night. Went to her beloved sport training in need of that endorphin release from seeing her friends, exercise etc.

This morning she went to sch with a defeated expression on her face, and my words of encouragement didn't seem to register. She's aiming for a 5, so she doesn't have to resit, and it would also give her a plan b for 6th form choices if she doesn't get the required grades in one of her other subjects.

She was only diagnosed as dyslexic last summer, and school wouldn't acknowledge the diagnosis until Jan this year, so she has only had a few months of intensive support both from sch and tutoring. But the progress she has made is huge imo. She just can't see it, focusing on the parts she still finds difficult.

Fingers crossed for a paper that suits her, some of the sample ones are horrible, some not so bad.

I keep thinking, I can't wait for the exams to be over, but know I will then go into countdown mode until results day.
Like other pp's, in two yrs time I will have both GCSE and a levels going on in our house, and if this is anything to go by, I'd like to move into someone else's house for that year please.
Any takers? I'm a good cook but less keen on cleaning...

Iambuffy · 07/06/2019 10:04

I'm planning lots of things to distract us over the summer!

Bimkom · 07/06/2019 11:07

Verdict on English language "meh". Section 1 very good, section two, could have been better.

Bimkom · 07/06/2019 11:09

I see on twitter that a question was on the Kardashians. Don't think he knows a lot about female social influences, but he may surprise me.

Bimkom · 07/06/2019 11:11

influencers

DeRigueurMortis · 07/06/2019 11:22

Well that's DS stuffed then.

I'm pretty sure he hasn't got a clue who the Kardashian's are Confused

(Something I'm pretty proud off - what a silly exam topic!!!)

TabbyStar · 07/06/2019 11:33

At last, watching Love Island instead of revising has paid off! AQA English.

Bimkom · 07/06/2019 11:33

Well I may have got that wrong, just there seem to be lots of memes about them on twitter

TabbyStar · 07/06/2019 11:35

Btw it wasn't the Kardashians it was a question about how people should earn their celebrity through achievement rather than being famous for nothing much (I paraphrase).

DeRigueurMortis · 07/06/2019 11:37

Tabby thanks - maybe not totally stuffed then but definitely not his sort of question given I doubt he's got any examples to cite (celebrity culture is deffo not his thing).

srilankadreaming · 07/06/2019 11:39

Hi again, back after lurking for a while.
Yes the English did have a section about celebrities this morning. DD was ok with after tears first thing but a chat about the History yesterday with her friends has her panicking again. Apparently she has thrown away an 8 mark question by discussing the wrong Fort Laramie Treaty ( American West paper) Gutted! She knew it inside out but didn't read the date in the question...

Now trying to get her head round Biology 2 - first one didn't go well. TGI Friday!!!

Iambuffy · 07/06/2019 11:53

I think a lot of kids made that mistake tbh sri

Is that the edexcel English paper???
Ds will be stuffed. I'm proud to say he knows nothing of the Kardashians! 😁😩

DeRigueurMortis · 07/06/2019 12:07

Buffy it's the AQA English paper re: writing a letter to a newspaper editor about celebrity culture.

pikapikachu · 07/06/2019 12:08

Good job dd is watching Love Island then 😂

Iambuffy · 07/06/2019 12:15

I think.the edexcel paper had something on TripAdvisor???

jamimmi · 07/06/2019 12:15

Oh help that Ds stuffed with AQA English really not.his thing. Hopefully he'll learn it towards footballers. He was.just saying last night everyone was watching love island and what was it...... Hope biology is better!

DeRigueurMortis · 07/06/2019 12:17

Who knew that banning trash reality TV as a parent would bugger up their english GCSE Confused

SilentSister · 07/06/2019 12:34

We don't really do Twitter, but have been lurking on StudentRoom, where the students do discuss answers to questions from the various exams. Not so many doing IGCSE, but definitely lots of discussions on GCSE's.

jamimmi · 07/06/2019 12:35

Indeed rigamortis. Now feeling like a failure for encouraging my.kids not to watch rubbish based on the cult of celebrity. Off to ensure the year 7 has it all recorded on sky plus for 2023!

Fibbke · 07/06/2019 12:38

Hi all, dd had Classical Civ on Wednesday which she said went 'brilliantly' and all the sources that she'd learnt came up. Maths Igcse was very hard and she struggled beyond question 12/13. She's also been glad to see the back of Spanish. She's quite happy about Biology today and then she's just got two more science papers next week and she's DONE! Then the real problems start - what she's going to wear to the 6 parties she's been invited to Hmm

clary · 07/06/2019 12:40

Celebrity could be a footballer tho or anyone on film/TV, I am sure they will all have thought of someone

Fibbke · 07/06/2019 12:42

Celebrities? God how depressing and I'm rather glad mine did IGcse and the questions seemed much more academic. At the risk of sounding like an old snob I am indeed old and a snob

Bonkus · 07/06/2019 12:42

English down this morning and Biology this afternoon. Almost done! Smile

For those whose DC's are taking Edexcel IGCSE Geography (Human) exam next week, what revision resources are you using? There's the 2017 Specification and Sample Assessment on the Edexcel site but that's about all we have been able to find. If anyone has other revision resources they can share we would appreciate it!

Rugbylife · 07/06/2019 12:45

Well, it’s over! All 15 exams done here with 4 in the bag done from last year. Good luck to us all on results day.

srilankadreaming · 07/06/2019 12:51

Wow Rugbylife!! All done? Lucky you, we have another week of this yet. A good idea from your school to get 4 in the bag from last year. I wish more schools did this.
