Ds doesn't seem to want to talk about it bit is in his room chuckling at a comedy show on iplayer.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 07/06/2019 16:15

DS (geeky, techy) said he was really scratching his head as he could not think about a single good-looking celebrity (not sure why it had to be a goodlooking one?). He decided to write instead about someone who is famous for being dumb (Joey Essex) and how he used to admire him (what?! LOL, he said he made this up as he had to write something). He was completely flumoxed by this question and may have written gibberish....

Oh well

Biology (AQA, triple) was very tough, they did not ask facts as much as asking to apply and combine knowledge to get to the answer. He found it hard.

oh well

Weekend! Happy weekend all

Arewedone · 07/06/2019 16:17

Igcse Biology 2 feedback- it was “good” big evaluate question on symbiotic relationship of coral but otherwise seems ok 🤞🏻
Only 2 left next week!

ROZ12 · 07/06/2019 16:19

Hi all
Can anyone help us with the Art Edexcel NEA results that were released today? We can’t work out what it’s out of and what grade my DD has achieved .

Thanks

Roz

DeRigueurMortis · 07/06/2019 16:21

Well I was right - DS said he didn't have a clue on how to answer the celebrity question, so taking time to think about he decided to "flip it".

By this I mean he wrote to the editor to express his dismay that on xxx date C.E.R.N had announced a major breakthrough in their H.C. research that had made significant strides in understanding of space/time and quantum mechanics. However none of the papers readers would be aware of the implications of this ground breaking work because the paper has only mentioned it in one brief paragraph on page 15, whilst the first 3 pages (including front page) were devoted to lifestyle stories about people whose sole claim to fame was their wealth, looks etc and whose sole contribution to society was to bolster the share price of instagram and Twitter.

Not exactly sure that's what the examiner will be expecting but maybe some marks for original thinking Confused.

On the positive side, Biology went well apart from one question (a six mark) and he could only think of 4 responses.

Anyway he's jumping for joy that hopefully he'll never have to do English ever again!!!

So he's taking the evening off to celebrate - so we're going to have a movie night and favourite snacks to chill out!

Have a good weekend everyone...the end is near!!!

Iambuffy · 07/06/2019 16:22

That tallies with what ds said re aqa triple biology.

5 to go...

Next Tuesday is final maths and history paper.

TabbyStar · 07/06/2019 16:24

I had a message from DD saying AQA biology triple didn't go well and she was going to sleep for a bit. It's been a tough week for various reasons and she was feeling sick before both of today's exams. Though the diabetes question should have been good for her, she has a couple of close friends with it and used to appear to me to be an expert!

gleegeek · 07/06/2019 16:27

9 to go! Thank goodness it's the weekend! Dd said the English lang went ok - no idea what she wrote about as she has no interest in celebrities apart from the odd youtuber! Just glad to have finished English and biology, which was hard but ok. Hooray!
Now she can focus on food tech and german which have had no revision for the past month Shock
Glad everyone seems to have survived this week- it's been a tough one!

readyforsunshine · 07/06/2019 16:29

De rigeur it’s my understanding that that would be a perfectly good answer. The question was not testing their knowledge of celebrities it was testing their ability to write a strong argumentative letter. Celebrities was just the subject surely?
Dd is delighted to get today over & has come home in a high, no more English or biology, hurray! She said they were both fine, biology paper was tougher than the first. She felt lucky that her class had studied in more detail the topics that came up. Pure luck as her friends class had gone into more detail on more difficult topics so she had naturally found it more difficult. Just so much to cover on the curriculum, must be near impossible for the teachers.

NationalAnthem · 07/06/2019 16:32

Dcs said everyone talked about the Kardashians in English language - not a bad paper, bit harder than paper one but ok. Ocr combined science was a dream of a paper - it was so hard last year dcs were dreading it. Three more exams and they are done! I think we are all done!

lionfish · 07/06/2019 16:36

Yippee, my DD finished this morning! We're in Wales, so some exams/modules were taken in year 10 or Nov of year 11 (a total of 9 ) so DD only had 15 exams this session which has been great. We also still have the A-G system, I feel for the pupils who are feeling pressured to get 9s which on paper appears to be an A*.

DDs exams have gone OK according to the texts I've had from her after she's finished but I've not probed further as I've not wanted her to think and worry once she's completed the exam. She did think that yesterdays Maths paper was really hard (WJEC calculator paper) but she'll hopefully have done enough to be happy with her grade.

DD has a summer full of fun ahead of her with trips galore planned. She also has different work experiences lined up as she has absolutely no idea what she wants to do for a career which makes choosing A level subjects hard. She quite likes most things, isn't passionate about anything and unfortunately dislikes the things she is naturally best at - typical!

Good luck to the rest of your DCs with their exams - the end is in sight for all...

DeRigueurMortis · 07/06/2019 16:38

Ready cross fingers you're right.

Tbh I thought it was quite funny (and typical) to flip it to be able to write about something so blummmin obscure and nerdy GrinGrinGrin

Rugbylife · 07/06/2019 16:42

I think in hindsight my ds wishes he’d resat them as in Y10 he couldn’t think any further than leaving school at 16 but now has a place at a regional sports academy where he can do 3 A levels and Welsh Bac, he’s now talking about university courses where in Y10 he was thinking about doing an apprenticeship post 16. One of his friends stayed in school after English exam as he was resitting Biology but it turns out they never entered him for it so he’s stuck with his C too.

NoClueWithStyle · 07/06/2019 16:43

Dd is home and happy with her performance today. Said the eng lang was an easier paper than her mocks and biology (aqa triple higher) was good but she forgot the eyes ligament was called a suspensory ligament. Shes kicking herself. She wrote sensory ligament, so in hoping she only lost one mark for that.

Shes wiped out though. Said shes ready for a nap and that isn't her usual way at all. Rest relaxation and revision this weekend before the final 4 exams next week.

pikapikachu · 07/06/2019 16:48

Dd has trouble deciding which newspaper to write to as I read my news online so she's not sure of the names of newspapers. She said she could only think of the Daily Mail and The Sun but settled for the latter as she wasn't sure if she was confusing the Daily Mail with Royal Mail. She would have had an even harder job if she had to write to a magazine editor as their generation don't read offline magazines like we did- they go online instead.

pikapikachu · 07/06/2019 16:50

Dd does combined science and found this paper better as it actually contained required practicals and stuff that she's learned. Monday 17th can't come round soon enough.

MaddieElla · 07/06/2019 17:11

DD said AQA triple was half excellent, half disgusting Hmm I wish she'd give me a clue about how she's done, but she doesn't give anything away.

Good questions on eyes, the brain and standard deviation, whatever that is.

behindlocknumbernine · 07/06/2019 17:13

Dd said the English was "Good! Really nice paper"

She does trilogy (combined science) and said "best exam so far out of all topics".

Phew, as both English and Biology are A level choices for her Smile

pointythings · 07/06/2019 17:41

DD2 very happy with English lang and pleased with Biology too. 4 exams left to go, no doubles at all next week!

MollyButton · 07/06/2019 17:49

Did liked the papers but initially thought Biology was too "easy", which seems to be a good sign as she is planning on taking it to A'level.
She didn't mention the Kardashian's but did reference Hitler and the Holocaust.

cantkeepawayforever · 07/06/2019 17:51

DD OK. Pleased the Biology (Trlogy) asked about 'facts and stuff' rather than the rather weird paper 1. Would have liked more time for the English, but that's normal.

7 next week (3 x her second MFL, Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths) then final one a week on Monday.

Next week contains her only timetable clash so she has 3 exams on Friday and a et of special arrangements. Luckily, although nationally it must be a really rare clash - second MFL is non-mainstream - there are a decent sized group with her, as the MFL is v. popular in her school and often taken by those who might also be attracted by doing Further Maths as an after-school club!

Bakeandyarn · 07/06/2019 17:54

The fire alarm went off during Eng Lang for us, and not just once! Despite that DD thought it was an ok paper and Biology was also alright. I’m hoping that the fire alarms were recorded by the invigilators as it sounds a bit disruptive!

KittyMcKitty · 07/06/2019 18:14

Ds says the final question was a statement that people should be famous for their work and achievements as opposed to for being good looking and behaving badly and they were writing in response to the statement.

Ds knows a fair bit about love island and the Khardashians (we’re very low brow I’m afraid) but didn’t write about any celebrity in particular. He wrote that in general the bad behaviour was a by product of the effects of fame and that these people were only famous because the general public made them so, so if people don’t like them being famous they should re-examine themselves and their actions.

I think it was a great question which didn’t require any knowledge of Kim, Khloe and co but gave an easy “in” for lower ability students whilst allowing higher ability students to have fun with it in many different ways. Also v topical with all tge media coverage of the 2 recent suicides of past Love Islanders - the effect of throwaway celebrity on fragile mental health.

Many years ago I scribed for a student in this exam- the question was to write a speech outlining why you should be elected to the school council. The student had communication difficulties, very low self esteem and was from a home where people didn’t sit around chatting about current affairs. They sobbed for an hour and told me they didn’t know what to say as they couldn’t imagine ever doing this. They wrote maybe two sentences. All that exam did was make them feel even more worthless. Something like this would at least give them a way in.

Edexcel Biology ds didn’t think he answered the 2 6 markers brilliantly but otherwise not too bad.

Only 4 left now and nothing till Tuesday thank god!

Well done all the dc for getting this far whatever the results you should all be celebrated FlowersCakeGin

KittyMcKitty · 07/06/2019 18:16

Also made me smile (although clearly ds didn’t make tge connection as he’s only 16) but Ben Fogel (whose book was one extract) found fame in reality TV - nicely cyclical Smile

readyforsunshine · 07/06/2019 18:29

Kitty exactly what I was trying to say but much more eloquently put!Smile
