Anyone But England

TobyEsterhase · 06/07/2026 11:41

My social media is jam packed with Scots declaring their support for DR Congo/Mexico/Norway/ whoever England are playing next.

I find this obsession with our neighbours weird and cringeworthy.

Do you think Canadians make such an issue of supporting Anyone But USA or the Dutch supporting Anyone But Germany ?

Doubly ironic when players like Scott McTominay and Che Adams are about as Scottish as Morris Dancing.

Where did I write anything rude or disparaging about the English. WHERE? WHEN?

I'm waiting on your evidence???????

NewTeethNewBodNewMe · 08/07/2026 17:31

Okay so she was incredibly rude and disparaging about the English but an English person must remain beyond reproach in their response. Is that it?

There’s a massive difference between “beyond reproach” and “really really insensitive”

Weeellokthen · 08/07/2026 21:44

Could someone please point to any disparaging or rude comments I have ever made on mn about the English. Getting really pissed off with the libelous accusations made by
Newteethnewbodnew me?
I have never reported any fellow user but you have really upset me with your blatant lies.

I think “the English had left the Scots alone to run around in skirts hurling spears at one another?” covers it

That wasn't me who said that 😂
I am the one accused of disparaging "The English"
She will not directly respond to me because her pants are on fire 😆

I totally agree with you
I am Scottish and proud of it but definitely supporting England in the WC

Apologies. I assumed you were asking because I'd commented on that post and I was trying to answer before my flight took off from, ironically, Glasgow.

My dad's neighbour flies a flag on a proper flag pole at all times, and whenever England is playing football, he always flies the flag of whoever they are playing. He must have some collection!

I live down south now and my husband and children are English. When we visit, the neighbour seems friendly enough but my family is not convinced it's genuine.

He must be spending a fortune in this World Cup.
Sad old bloke.

Thank you for sticking up for me though, appreciate it x
Where are you going, anywhere exciting?

I was flying home from a business meeting in Glasgow. Always a pleasure to visit my client there!

Norway is a bit different though - some parts of Scotland are closer to Norway than England, no? And used to be part of the Danish kingdom alongside Norway, speaking Norn

And some parts of Kent are close to France than to London …….. NO?

Are they not fed up yet of supporting the losing side? This must all be very stressful for them.
All that wasted energy.

The ABE mentality is like someone being consumed by resentment when their sibling is successful. Understandable when you are of primary school age but embarrassing in a grown adult.

Is there is a name for this condition ? If not, I would suggest Prince Harry Syndrome.

I will go with you on that.
And all that money being generated for our hospitality industry. All that joy. All the excited kids.
Bring on Argentina!

I agree @HumbleKatey that the “closer to” argument is so spurious.

@SuperLoudPoppingAction England was a Danish country, a Norman (also vikings!) country and an “Italian” country. So that’s a bit of grasping at straws right there, no?

I think it's funny and not surprising. Jealousy often comes out in bitterness like this and it says a lot about the people saying it (none of it good)

I winder if he will fly the Argentine flag. He's on the main road into the town- I think there are people in the town who will be angry if he does that.

Well if he does, that shows how bitter and stupid he is…

What is remarkable is that no one down here gives 2 hoots about what they are up to in Scotland. Since the World Cup started, I haven’t heard the word Scotland mentioned once at work.

Yep-and if Scotland won I'd be happy for them! I cant imagine being all petulant like a toddler and "it's not fair!" about it.

It just reminds me of a three year old stomping their foot and going purple in the face with rage because their sibling has toy they wanted 🤣🤭
