Anyone But England

TobyEsterhase · 06/07/2026 11:41

My social media is jam packed with Scots declaring their support for DR Congo/Mexico/Norway/ whoever England are playing next.

I find this obsession with our neighbours weird and cringeworthy.

Do you think Canadians make such an issue of supporting Anyone But USA or the Dutch supporting Anyone But Germany ?

Doubly ironic when players like Scott McTominay and Che Adams are about as Scottish as Morris Dancing.

We are not ruled by the English

Exactly. So what's the problem?

I don’t think Scotland should have devolution mainly cause the country is going to shite while the most prominent legislation passed in the last parliament was about banning greyhound racing and doubling up the law about stealing dogs. Does ANYONE think Holyrood is a success? Anyone think it’s improving the lives of Scottish people?

Thanks for making my point for me. And you're a prime example of why devolution isn't enough. While we're in a union, with a more powerful country, we're at the risk of people like you getting what they want, and giving England ALL the power, instead of just most of it. But thanks for stepping up, to be the proof of my earlier point.

As for devolution being a failure. Oh please, have you seen the state of the rUK? England's public services are failing, education, tuition fees, crime, homelessness, poverty, public transportation, water treatment, cost of living etc. There's nothing you can throw at the Scottish government, that the English government haven't failed with. And unlike them, Scotland's budget is out of our control, as are many reserved powers.

So on that basis, the UK doesn't deserve to manage its own affairs, and a much bigger more capable foreign power should take over and control it, the way you would like for Scotland.

Anyway, i'm done talking with you. I have no time for people who hate Scotland and would sell all the autonomy we have to another country.

Yes, massively so.

Agree - Holyrood is a waste of money, full of absolute incompetents who would struggle to earn half their wages in the real world.

An absolute binfire. Scotland is in a sorry sorry state - it’s gone downhill rapidly since devolution. A huge waste of money.

See, you're all crawling out of the woodwork now to prove my point.
Following your logic, China should take over the UK. The UK has failed in so many key areas. Or maybe you're just another unionist hypocrite, with double standards.

Dom keep it up though. Support for the union continues to decline, and is now barely above 40% based on recent polling. The more that Scots hear people like you willing to (if you're from Scotland) sell our autonomy to England, or (if you're English) try take it from us, the more the push for independence will continue to grow. The union is already on borrowed time. All the countries outside England have pro-national governments, from Plaid, to SF, to the SNP.

It's time to give up the ghost.

English people don't care if you support them. There's no demand that you support them apart from in your mind. The whole reason you're supporting those opposition teams is because you're obsessed with England. It's embarrassing. You're falsely portraying it as England caring about what Scotland does, when what you're doing is hating on England. And then your only comeback is to complain when some of them notice? And I say some as the average English fan in a tournament is just focused on their own team. Maybe we should change our mindset and put our energy into how to improve our own national team. There are plenty poorer smaller nations who do better than us.

Edited

Clearly they do though, hence all these "pity me posts".
They're all over tiktok, instagram and twitter, telling us exactly how much they don't care. It's quite sad really. Imagine being so desperate for people in other nations to support your team, or feeling entitled to it.

It's this type of fact-free rambling and blatant Anglophobia (there hasn't been an English government for 319 years and counting) which ensures that Independence will be a toxic brand to Middle Scotland for decades to come.

I genuinely feel sorry for people who view the world through an England v Scotland prism - they are all so unhappy and angry.

In the real world and according to figures voluntarily published by SNP ScotGov, Scotland raises £91bn in taxes (including geographic share of North Sea) and has £117bn of public spending. This results in an annual deficit of £26bn of which £12bn is funded by a population share of UK borrowing and the remaining £14bn by fiscal transfers from taxpayers in the London area (home to 280,000 Scots).

Couldn’t agree more @TobyEsterhase however there is no use presenting facts to the braveheart mob, they simply can’t see beyond their hatred of England.

It came as no surprise to anyone in possession of said facts that the SNP seem reluctant to forge ahead with full fiscal responsibility - they know full well it’s a one way ticket to an economic black hole.

Once again querying my ‘Scottishness’ because I disagree with you….

You see if the SNP acknowledged these FACTS (yes, they’re FACTS!) and said what they were going to do about it if Scotland voted yes in a Indy referendum then I’d have so much more respect for them, but they cannot think of a way to spin it that sounds anything but appalling. So they ignore those FACTS and pretend they don’t exist. It’s like a 2 year old covering their eyes and claiming to be hiding. So embarrassingly inept.

Most Scots couldn't give a flying fuck about the WC

We all have the same worries and issues.

I'm Ne Scotland and have no ill feelings towards the Nationalities that make up the UK

However if you piss me off in a personal level

Depends on the tone of it. I normally think the anyone but England stuff is small minded chip on our shoulder nonsense. Saw video footage of a pub in Glasgow, people cheering when Argentina scored which I don’t get at all - who cares how England do.

Some of the stuff is quite funny tho. There’s a Paddy Power advert saying something like “coming home, is it aye?” Which was good. I also thought the footage of England fans singing you can book your ticket home to the tune of I Can Boogie when we got knocked out was funny. Harmless football banter.

Banter is banter.
Burning flags is not.
