My husband and son are going to declare themselves female.

From MBM's statement

"The ramifications of this judgement extend beyond Scotland’s census. It will cement Scottish Government guidance that advises public authorities to collect data that conflates sex and self-defined gender identity. It will impact on the ability of public authorities to meet their Public Sector Equality Duty requirements to monitor and assess policies in line with the protected characteristics.

And as we explained to the Cabinet Minister and Scottish Government officials, it means that the impact of gender recognition reform cannot be assessed. The Scottish Government was unable to respond to this point."

Why would your son and husband declare themselves female if they are not (I'm assuming they are not trans)? What a very stupid thing to do.

Or more likely, you're trying to make a big fuss about nothing.

Rodedooda · 24/02/2022 11:50

Who's to say they're not female for the day? What's the definition? The criteria? That is the point. It's a farce.

And eg maternity services for women may improve if numbers increase.

mudgetastic · 24/02/2022 12:32

Because the more people who show how stupid it is the quicker common sense will take over

Because if words have no meaning it doesn't matter and you can't say anyone is lying if the words mean anything and nothing

Pixiedust1234 · 24/02/2022 12:39

Holy... Shock

I think its time anyone running for government/judiciary has to have mental health competency tests bc they are absolute nutters

aquamarine1 · 24/02/2022 12:41

Appalling decision today, dreadful bastardisation of language. I will see what sex I feel on the day I fill the census out.

Noisyprat · 24/02/2022 12:58

But they might feel female that day and why not. This is absolutely what this has come down to and this is the decision the Scottish government are entrusting to it's people. They don't want to collect factual data ie. a persons sex which is observed at birth, that will be useful and guide decision making, they to collect data that is based on how someone feels.

I really hope the people of Scotland just put whatever they like under this, after all the Scottish government clearly aren't interested in collecting meaningful data.

Waitwhat23 · 24/02/2022 13:00

It's such a bizarre own goal for transpeople to deny their sex on the census. Given that future resources (maternity services, cervical screening etc) will be based upon false numbers if people can falsely self id as female, it means that funding will go on services which are underused while services and resources for trans people will be reduced as they wil not be counted in the census (by not having separate sex and gender questions).

It's bizarre.

mudgetastic · 24/02/2022 13:07

They think no one except a tiny minority of people are affected

Somanysocks · 24/02/2022 13:11

What's that phrase about lunatics and asylums?...

readsalotgirl63 · 24/02/2022 13:18

Agree @Waitwhat23 - you've articulated what I think but was struggling to express clearly - thank you !

Hi, OP. We're moving your thread to the Feminism: Sex & Gender board now.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 24/02/2022 13:21

Of many things I don't understand about this, my understanding is that there is a separate question for 'gender' anyway, so what exactly is the problem with giving an accurate sex, observed at birth, so that accurate data can be collected for service provision (which the adverts say is the entire point of the exercise). Use the gender question to save people's feelings, and the sex question for medical and scientific accuracy. It doesn't matter how much you might 'feel' like a female, if you have no womb or cervix you will never need cervical screening or maternity care. This ruling really does defy all common sense.

Hi, OP. We're moving your thread to the Feminism: Sex & Gender board now.
Can I ask why this is to be tucked away in the Feminism board when it directly affects women in Scotland? Many people may not realise that this kind of thing is happening.

Because of course this couldn't possibly be of interest to a wider audience Hmm

You've answered your own question in your final sentence...

Please don’t.

This is rightfully in the scotsnet section as it is pertinent to Scotland.

Not helpful. There's already a discussion on the sex & gender board. This is VERY relevant to Scotland. Angry

Why assume? How dare you!
Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 24/02/2022 13:29

I suspect you might be right @ItsAllGoingToBeFine. It's such a robust and defensible point of view that you can't allow open discussion about it, because if everyone really knew what was happening there'd be uproar. Angry

I’m currently working towards leaving Scotland, this government is appalling.
SunniDelite · 24/02/2022 13:30

I'm shocked that Mumsnet thinks this issue only affects feminists... :(

NecessaryScene · 24/02/2022 13:34

Are you saying her "son" and "husband" should declare themselves female if they're "trans"?

Glad to have you on board. Grin
