Are women in Scotland aware of how bad things have got?

Leafstamp · 03/02/2022 19:15

I hang out on the Feminism board a lot, and I know not all MNetters care for that section. Which is fine. But I am continually appalled at how bad things are for women in Scotland - compared to England.

For example, this, from Feminism thread:

www.spiked-online.com/2022/02/01/the-thought-police-are-here/

To briefly summarise:

  • Mridul was born male
  • Mridul is legally male with no GRC
  • Mridul is the CEO of Edinburgh Rape crisis
  • Mridul claims women who want female only rape crisis services are bigoted and should 'reframe their trauma'
  • The CEO of a domestic violence charity Nicola Murray stopped referring women to Mridul's rape crisis service due to Mridul's misogyny
  • Mridul reported Nicola Murray to the police for committing a hate crime
  • The police actually visited Nicola Murray to question her thinking

Please can any not-particularly-feminist women share how you feel about this?

The 'wrong signs were put up'.

Sure they were.

I've not been keeping up with this thread in real time, but I think it's so important we try and raise these issues (carefully) with friends, family & colleagues who may not be aware of what the SG are trying to sneakily sneak in.

WouldBeGood · 07/02/2022 14:15

That’s what I try to do @Rodedooda. Most effective with my teenage son has been finding out that lesbians are “transphobic” if they don’t wish to date men with penises. He and his friends have also watched some of the trans women v women sports, and are pretty shocked.

Most people have no idea that no transition is necessary to declare oneself the opposite sex.

HirplesWithHaggis · 08/02/2022 01:48

This happening in Scotland now.

"To most people it is astonishing that questioning a man touching your non-verbal disabled female child’s genitals could be a criminal offence, yet in Scotland it is about to become a hate crime. Why are politicians willing to re-traumatise potential abuse victims to fulfil men’s fantasies?"

It’s horrifying.

@Rhannion

Can we just agree that NO, Scotland isn’t great place to be at the moment if you are a woman?
Yep!
Swear · 08/02/2022 17:03

On the issue of disabled women being given carers who are male, I think this is the relevant provision in the Hate Crimes Act. I can imagine a test case happening, which would be awful for the disabled person of course:
(2)A person commits an offence if—
(a)the person—
(i)behaves in a manner that a reasonable person would consider to be threatening or abusive, or
(ii)communicates to another person material that a reasonable person would consider to be threatening or abusive, and
(b)in doing so, the person intends to stir up hatred against a group of persons based on the group being defined by reference to a characteristic mentioned in subsection (3).
(3)The characteristics are—
(a)age,
(b)disability,
(c)religion or, in the case of a social or cultural group, perceived religious affiliation,
(d)sexual orientation,
(e)transgender identity,
(f)variations in sex characteristics.

More depressing evidence:

A woman on Good Morning Scotland talking about birth trauma and using the term "birthing person". Imagine not being able to use the terms mother, pregnant woman when talking about childbirth. Pathetic and insulting.

The threat to women is from male violence. That is the threat.

So you agree male violence is the issue, but we should let some males, even though are as likely, according to all evidence available , to be as violent as any other males, into female safe single sex spaces, just because they say they identify as women. This is totally illogical!
If males are excluded because they are potentially dangerous to women, this should include the male people who identify as women,. as they present the same risk to women as any other male leople

boobashka · 08/02/2022 23:06

Was just coming on here to post that link @HirplesWithHaggis.

Absolutely shocking.

Surely they can't get away with this?

Rhannion · 09/02/2022 00:32

They will if we don’t keep pushing back by informing people, especially in Scotland. Women have groups all over Scotland and we have stalls popping up all over.
There was one in Aberdeen this past Saturday, the women got some nonsense from some nasty pieces of work, but overall it was a positive time of engagement with the folk of.Aberdeen.
We have to stand up fo women who can’t, like those in prison and disabled women & children.
Please do what you can to help.

Great article in the telegraph

Are women in Scotland aware of how bad things have got?
Welliwonder · 14/02/2022 22:08

I love that article!

Rhannion · 19/02/2022 15:47

For Women Scotland had a important victory yesterday. Have a look on BBC news website for the details. The victory should knock the wheels off the census, the hate crime bill and self ID
We went to Parliament Square with flags and banners to celebrate, then off to the pub!

WouldBeGood · 19/02/2022 16:03

I saw that @Rhannion! Great news, and hopefully will knock this on the head!

I am so grateful to FWS for fighting these cases.

Rhannion · 19/02/2022 16:18

For Women Scotland frankly need money to keep on fighting so any contributions would be very welcome. Have a look for their details on Facebook & Twitter.

WouldBeGood · 19/02/2022 16:20

Yeah, I follow and donate 😃

readsalotgirl63 · 19/02/2022 16:25

Me too

It's good that the disgraceful attempt by the SG to redefine woman as 'anyone who feels like it' has been ruled unlawful, but horrifying that the only means to pick this up and correct it was via an external group bringing a law suit! This isn't how law is supposed to be made, and isn't the first time the courts have had to step in badly written law by the Scottish Government. It's been said before, but this is just yet more evidence that the Scottish Government has too much power given the absence of proper checks and balances. There desperately needs to be wholesale reform (second chamber and independent judiciary as an absolute minimum) to protect the Scottish people from an overzealous yet utterly incompetent SG and their pathetic attempts at 'law'.

I’m not on Facebook or twitter - how do I donate .

I’ve told friends about this and am not sure they actually believe me

Rhannion · 19/02/2022 18:25

I don’t know how to share links on here & im not sure we are allowed to, but if you google For Women Scotland the information should come up.

annabelindajane · 21/02/2022 11:35

Well done . Women throughout Scotland owe you all a big thank you.

Rhannion · 21/02/2022 14:29

Getting support on here is great. There is an army of women out here pushing back and the SNP/Greens, Lib Dems, Labour and Conservatives underestimate women at their peril.
