@Dinnafashyersel

Weird juxtaposition of MSPs sitting in Holyrood unmasked debating the merits of conversing in a socially distanced manner in other indoor social settings without masks.
My ds said the same thing. He was also most indignant as in addition to having to wear a mask while attending lectures and tutorials, he recently had to give a presentation wearing one. I am increasingly feeling like those in charge are carrying on their lives with relative normality while the little people are changing their lives to stop the spread.
Dinnafashyersel · 23/12/2020 14:55

Exactly MissEliza. My DD1 is comparatively lucky to have some F2F tutorials at Uni. She has to wear her facemask. She also has to wear it when using any communal areas in her Hall accommodation.

MissEliza · 23/12/2020 15:00

I did try to calm ds a little bit by saying the uni is doing its best to keep things going by asking them to do these things. His course requires a lot of practical instruction so they need to be able to meet face to face. His course leader actually asked them to please follow the rules when they're around campus because he didn't want anyone in the community to have reason for complaint. So much pressure is being placed on young people. I think many have a real distrust of government now.

By next week we will be delivering second doses though, and the flow of vaccines coming in isn't all that fast. It would allow people still in the very high priority groups to be covered more quickly

IIRC we got 800k doses and hoped for more before year end. Not that many

Dinnafashyersel · 23/12/2020 15:04

Just read the TB article in the Independent in full. It's no more than a cleverly constructed piece of propaganda to push for earlier authorisation of the Oxford vaccine with an agenda to vaccinate the whole population right down to students.

This is not about prioritising the vulnerable or even getting everyone back to normal. This is about vaccinating everyone whether that is the best way forward or not. Even having done that he admits that it would not eradicate the virus.

Stats Jeanne Freeman confirmed today that 2nd doses don't start till January - in line with stated 3 week lag 2 dose schedule. 800k was first consignment in a continuous supply. Latest reported figs (3 day lag so actual is higher) were over 500k (57k for Scotland) already had their 1st dose.

Dinnafashyersel · 23/12/2020 15:28

I know MissEliza. Exactly the same for my DD1. Good job most of the students I know have a great deal more compassion and perspective than those wagging the fingers.

WaxOnFeckOff · 23/12/2020 15:57

Neither of my DSs have had any F2F tutorials or lectures or indeed any time spent on campus at all. One hasn't even had any live sessions other than group work ones arranged with the other people in his "team".

Never mind the cost of paying for accommodation for the one living away.

First vaccines were 8th December, but either way January is next week...

She also said that we're expecting to receive another batch, 50% of which are reserved for second doses

I have a feeling uptake of second dose may be low after this. Plenty of folk (me included ) aren't a fan of needles and may well conclude it's not worth getting the second one. I'd say that as a result they at least need to confirm if TBs stats are wrong

cdtaylornats · 23/12/2020 16:23

The Pfizer vaccine hits 52% on the first load; 91% a few days after the second and 95% after a week or two.

That makes more sense. If the NHS thought one dose would do it they'd save the cash and only do one esp at £15 or what ever a go.
Shorternights · 23/12/2020 16:51

What do we think the chances are of an announcement from Scot Gov tomorrow outlining further restrictions (Level 4+; Level 5; Lockdown 2.0?!) from Boxing Day? I was kind of expecting something today, but it all seems to have gone a bit quieter after the mask news.

Bytheloch · 23/12/2020 17:00

Restrictions will be from the 30th, or have I made that up? I thought anything further kicked in from then. Not much else that could be brought in, but I’m guessing if garden centres can’t even be open, it’ll be back to just supermarkets and maybe welsh style aisles of goodies/non essentials closed off. Also assumed not even NS would be cruel enough to announce anything further on Christmas Eve?! Surely we’ll be allowed until Boxing Day to ‘enjoy’ ourselves before any more announcements?

Bikingbear · 23/12/2020 17:02

I don't think she'll say much more other than the 'tweaks' to L4.
Homeware and garden centres will be closed.

Shorternights · 23/12/2020 17:03

@Bytheloch I forgot it was Xmas Eve tomorrow! Which shows how festive I’m feeling. In which case yes, I bloody hope we get a bit of respite before anything else is (or indeed hopefully not) brought in.

Rae36 · 23/12/2020 17:04

I think they can't announce anything now for Boxing Day. Surely there are not enough people working either in the government or in any business to deal with any changes this late in the day. But maybe I'm hugely naive. Probably they'll announce it at the same time as the queen's speech so we all have to watch Queen Nic instead.

Coquohvan · 23/12/2020 17:36

Would you let NHS know if you don’t want your second dose?

Just feeling really sad tonight. Putting a brave face on for my kids. But just wanted to tell someone. That's all. Just sad.

Rae36 · 23/12/2020 18:05

Me too @Snowdrop30, I hear you

Groovee · 23/12/2020 18:06

@Snowdrop30 sending you hugs.

My dads funeral was a lovely tribute to him. We've had a chippy and a wee toast to him. Was so hard as we felt so many important people were missing.

Snowdrop30 · 23/12/2020 18:14

Very unMumsnetty hugs to you too @Groovee Flowers

anon444877 · 23/12/2020 18:14

That's the other guy I heard on R4 - the former head of immunisation at the dept of health, calling for focusing on the first dose.

Use everything you've got as fast as possible, offer more people some protection, especially given this more contagious new strain.

Parliament seems to be against it because it would need new approvals, as someone pointed out. Doesn't seem a good enough reason to me, should processes hold us back at this stage? They've thrown everything up in the air at a moment's notice for businesses and families this year.

Same. Can feel the anxiety building as well. Hugs to anyone who needs one
anon444877 · 23/12/2020 18:17

@Groovee that sounds like a nice memorial, hugs to you. @Snowdrop30 I'm sorry to hear that, we're here if you want to talk more.
