“New year - same tier”

I’m not bloody looking at the vaccine prediction site - so there!

NearWildHeaven · 02/01/2021 19:06

@WouldBeGood

Not about schools, but there’s reassuring news on children on the Royal College of Paediatricians Twitter feed
Thank you so much for highlighting this. I was quite anxious after reading some of the posts earlier today
WouldBeGood · 02/01/2021 19:11

Yes, me too @NearWildHeaven so I wanted to share when I found it

Cismyfatarse · 02/01/2021 19:28

Tiers on my pillow

WouldBeGood · 02/01/2021 19:31

@Cismyfatarse yes! Start that one

goodname · 02/01/2021 19:35

@Bikingbear mine are in p4 and p6 and both terrible at times tables. The older one is dyslexic which seems to affect his memory too. I bought the orchard games times table game to help and it’s not too boring and quite good for memorising them.
I also played a game with them during last homeschooling where they got a sweet for every five correct answers. They were asking for times table quizzes all the time 😀. With regards to memory we’ve also tried playing a game where you throw a ball with each question/answer and it’s supposed to help lodge it into your brain. Not sure if it works but it’s more fun

anon444877 · 02/01/2021 19:47

We've got that orchard times table game - it's great and a lot of their maths games are nice, mammoth maths, magic cauldron etc.

Chucking a ball or jumping are good ways to keep it active!

Bikingbear · 02/01/2021 19:53

I'm dyslexic too, certain tables I don't know or I need to work it out Blush but that doesn't mean I don't want better for DS.

I suspect DS is too but the last time it was mentioned school said he was too young. Then I never pushed it for various reasons, then lockdown hit...

Iwillneverbesatisfied · 02/01/2021 19:59

steak pie was nice, pastry not crispy enough though. And no sausages in it, cause I hate that. Its a steak pie ffs no a steak and sausage pie

Bytheloch · 02/01/2021 20:03

Better The Level You Know

As we’re levels in Scotland, just to be different Wink

RaraRachael · 02/01/2021 20:12

I'm not going to work out my possible vaccination date as I don't want to be depressed even further than I am. What was keeping me going was the hope of a summer holiday but if we've got to put up with this shite till 2022, I can't face the thought of that Sad

Yeah, that's why all our threads have tiers in the title...Wink
fluffyugg · 02/01/2021 20:23

@RaraRachael I don't get it but it's made me feel miserable tonight too. That, along with them messing with the spacing of doses is stressing me out. The light is there but feels far away just now Hmm

DollyMixtureLulus · 02/01/2021 20:36

Would it be helpful to start a thread just for homeschooling questions? If it's not, I'm always available for pms too.

mondaywine · 02/01/2021 20:36

@Bikingbear please do press for them
to look again at your son. Dyslexia profiles take a long while to get together and the sooner they start the better.

Bikingbear · 02/01/2021 20:37

I'd just keep them in the main thread. But that me.

I would agree with this. A friend got a diagnosis for her DS but it took a long time to go through the process. And this was before COVID.

Bikingbear · 02/01/2021 20:46

I did ask them when the schools re opened. He's also under assessment for ASD / ADHD.
Just to add to my issues. I'm definitely dyslexic got it confirmed as an adult, I don't think I've anything else going on.

RaraRachael · 02/01/2021 20:54

BikingBear I hope you don't mind me asking but is your son under assessment from an Educational Psychologist? We have lots of children in our school who should be assessed, but our EPs don't come out and see pupils any more as they now work in a "consultative role" whatever that means

It's very frustrating as parents think the school is doing nothing Hmm

Bikingbear · 02/01/2021 21:03

He was referring to Ed Psychologist in nursery. Then not much happen. Two years ago he was referred to Community Pediatricians, who called us July this year, and in between he had assessment with Speech and Language.

I've just sort of concluded it is what it is. Unless he gets help in primary hes not going to want to be 'different' in high school. Been there got the t-shirt. I've a couple of cousins kids who are exactly the same - just want to blend in come high school.

mondaywine · 02/01/2021 21:06

Without a diagnosis in primary it can be incredibly hard for kids to access the appropriate support at secondary. Our sfl team are responsible for dyslexia profiles. I’d bring it up with school regardless of online learning or in school learning.

Bikingbear · 02/01/2021 21:13

I know but the chances are even if it holds kids back they won't want 'help' in high school.
My cousin was trying to get her kid into autistic unit, kid was relieved to not get a place. I refused to engage with the only teacher to ever give me help with dyslexia. I can't even describe my feelings when my 2nd year English teacher had a spare place one day at the 'support base' and sent me.Blush Kids and the system haven't changed in 30 years.

MarchingFrogs · 02/01/2021 21:21

England will be partying away and we will still be made to love like this.

England person here. Who is very much afraid that even when they have rolled the vaccine out as far as myself (category 7, I think - over 60 with no pre-existing conditions, anyway), even if there will no longer be hordes of 80+ dying from anything other than what those aged 80+ tend to die from anyway, we will still be locked down. Because the number of positive tests amongst those not yet vaccinated (because they are at lower/est risk of serious illness) won't necessarily go down very much until they as a group have achieved herd immunity. And once the NHS has been saved, the number of positive tests will remain, of itself, a thing of terror.
I would dearly love to be proved wrong, of course.

ItsIgginningtolookalotlikeXmas · 02/01/2021 21:30

Bikingbear I do think in the time I've been teaching (20 years+) that other children's understanding and acceptance of learning difficulties has increased. There are certainly "cool" kids who get help from learning assistants in class, and when it comes to exams loads of pupils get extra time or to use a computer etc. It would be advantageous for your dc to have this chance. I would email the head of support for learning (or whoever you've been in touch with before) and ask what the plan is for assessing your ds for dyslexia. I find an email requiring a specific response works best. You don't have to be arsey about it but if you don't keep in touch he can slip to the bottom of the priority pile.

Bikingbear · 02/01/2021 21:38

I was just about to ask that question - has it changed or is it just coincidence that the two kids I know off are happier trying to blend in.

Given I'm not expecting the schools to open before February, will they be able to do dyslexia assessment before they reopen?
