October lockdown?

Hi
I can’t see another thread on this and I think it’s more Scotland than general CV related.

Any thoughts on this? I’m a teacher and there’s been no word at work but I’m hoping to go away for a week in half term (west coast) and really really hoping lockdown doesn’t happen! Selfish I know, but we need a break!

Anyone got any views on the likelihood?

If people weren't in care homes, they would be able to meet their relatives in their gardens, or in a cafe for a cup of tea. Or sit with their DH/DW in their home. They obviously aren't able to do that, so these measures give them back the social interaction with their families that we all need. It is a tricky situation, but as care homes are on top of hygiene, and all the staff and guests are PPEd to the eyeballs (not the case in a normal home, or a cafe) , it seems a small additional risk for immeasurable benefit.

Yes, cases will almost certainly increase, but cases are increased by all sorts of things (by us all not "staying at home", by schools and unis being open, by gyms being open, by places of worship being open... ) and the benefit of those things is balanced against the risk of cases increasing. The SG needs to decide which of these it is worth keeping open, and which can be shut down, but among all these decisions (and apparently in spite of them... I agree the timing is unfortunate) they have decided that giving people in care homes the same rights as other members of the community is a good moral step.

I wonder if they've been getting information about the deterioration of dementia patients who aren't getting enough contact with the outside world.

Who heard today's update? I am feeling very guilty about my plan to still go away on holiday. She was really strongly asking us not to go, wasn't she? What's everyone thinking now?

Ecosse · 14/10/2020 12:58

I’d certainly still be going away as planned @Rae36. Sturgeon would not be ruining my break.

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/10/2020 13:12

I don't listen to the updates. I'm still going. Out of the list of 380 areas, i'm 205 and area we are going to is 238.

Your plans sounded perfectly fine @Rae36, regardless of whether you want to pander to sturgeon.

You do all realise that we are now in the normal respiratory death season and the numbers of deaths from that will rise and the incidence of covid in the population inevitably means that more people will be testing positive?

7 months in and we still don't have any figures that tell us how many people are in hospital/ICU or die actually because of covid.

throwingawaymyshot · 14/10/2020 13:18

Half way through October week and she says don't go to Blackpool Hmm

TheOneWhoWalksInTheSun · 14/10/2020 13:25

I don't listen any more either.

Do they know if Blackpool is originating these cases or is it already in the community of the Scots visitors iyswim?

rookiemere · 14/10/2020 13:29

Based on last weeks update and Boris's Monday update yesterday I booked a weekend trip to the Lake District.

If you don't want people to travel, put on a travel ban so people can get refunds and fine people for breaking it. Oh and don't tell people they can have their half term holidays the week before.

TheOneWhoWalksInTheSun · 14/10/2020 13:30

Either way I can see not going is a fair idea in present circs.

WouldBeGood · 14/10/2020 13:31

I’m on my trip and it’s lovely! Had a pint inside 😱 And there’s music on! Went a big walk and really glad we came as looks like lockdown back imminently

rookiemere · 14/10/2020 13:49

It's just frustrating. I wasn't completely against the idea of a half term lockdown because I'm so keen for schools to remain open post half term and the mooted dates coincided with DSs half term dates anyway.

But this half measures thing with the wringing of hands and the strong encouragement not to go - when not a week ago the message was different - it's like water torture and it's not working ( if keeping new infections down is the goal)

WouldBeGood · 14/10/2020 13:54

I reckon schools will shut agsin now I’ve seen tge news from NI

Mistressiggi · 14/10/2020 13:58

No word here about schools closing, doesn't mean they won't of course! More students off isolating though.

I’m still going on mine, I’m over giving two fucks about anything she says any more.
LizzieMacQueen · 14/10/2020 14:03

Blackpool !!

Can't believe people willingly go on coach parties to Blackpool when things are as they are. (I am a massive snob though).

BrazenlyDefying · 14/10/2020 14:04

We're south of the border and one of the best things is not seeing nippy's grumpy face on telly.

We're having a lovely, low-risk time.

WouldBeGood · 14/10/2020 14:08

@BrazenlyDefying me too. It’s so relaxing 😊

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/10/2020 14:08

That's because these lockdowns don't really work anyway and are not recommended by WHO.

Most of this is just a case of this is what it is like normally at this time of year but the testing is adding an extra dimension.

So, even though I believe we are following the wrong strategy as a society, I'm in the favourable position where I'm not worried about catching it and don't have any responsibilities for vulnerable people so I do get why other people are concerned. However my normal day to day life is not a covid risk factor anyway. So, in conclusion, i do follow the rules pretty close to perfectly, but I am going on my holiday with completely no guilt.

Arkadia · 14/10/2020 14:13

@LizzieMacQueen, not sure if it is a "coach party", but I do like the us Vs them rhethoric that reappears at the first available opportunity.
Now it is Blackpool, the cradle of the black death.
Couldn't it be that it is the Scots importing it there?
In any case, good on them for going (maybe they are into ballroom dancing :D )

Arkadia · 14/10/2020 14:13

Disclaimer, I was referring to NS's rhethoric.

rookiemere · 14/10/2020 14:20

I have this theory that when she was talking about holidays last week - a bit like Queen Victoria who had no laws against Lesbians as she didn't believe it could exist - dear wee Nicola genuinely thought we were all off to rural Highland hideouts, I mean why would anyone leave Scotland right ?

I didn't listen to the broadcast- never do - it seems awfully specific to be blaming Blackpool holiday revellers.

WouldBeGood · 14/10/2020 14:29

I’ve gone to Evil England so I can sit indoors and have a glass of wine with my tea, and sit in front of a roaring fire in the pub. Back to the Kingdom of Eternal Winter tomorrow

IwishIwasyoda · 14/10/2020 14:30

I don't understand why people have been allowed to go on coach holidays (multiple households mingling in a very enclosed space) - don't understand why this wasn't against the rules tbh .... and I agree the next disaster is going to be the relaxation of care home rules.

I am so so so fed up of the scaremongering going on at the moment.
BBC website has article that reads
Nicola Sturgeon has warned that coronavirus is not just killing elderly people as she announced that a further 15 people have died after testing positive for the virus. The first minister said about half of the newly recorded deaths were people under the age of 80.
A "small number" were under the age of 60, she added.

So I would like to know how many of the deaths were in people aged 75-80 or indeed with known other serious underlying health conditions. Also how many were a result of Covid being in Edinburgh's WGH cancer ward.

Increasingly I feel we are only getting the statistics / information that is designed to keep us all in line with the continuing contradictory rules. AIBU - probably - just the way I am feeling today

Rae36 · 14/10/2020 14:32

But this half measures thing with the wringing of hands and the strong encouragement not to go - when not a week ago the message was different - it's like water torture

Exactly this. I hate it.

For my mental health and that of my family, and to see us through the winter, we really need to go away. So we're going. But is there really any need for all this piling on of the guilt now?

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/10/2020 14:32

That's the point though isn't it? It's always someone else's fault for not doing as they are told or not doing as they are told the right way or whatever. It's never just because it's infectious and therefore people will catch it. Or because they employed the wrong strategy or didn't act quick enough is it?
