CV in Scotland

(This probably will get moved to the CV topic but thought I'd start one in Scotsnet anyway).

Does anyone have info as to where the Scottish cases are and whether these are 'community gained' or direct exposure from a Cat 1/2 place.

Any thoughts on the impact for our youngsters due to sit SQA exams next month?

My DS is in his highers year. 2 emails from school last week suggesting self isolation for kids returning from Italian holidays in half term but quiet since then.

Scottish schools may close in days.

I thought that might of been the case with the emails going out tonight. There's been a lot of talk about it happening on Friday, maybe that is the intention.

Itsmybirthdaytoday20 · 17/03/2020 21:20

My kids came home with all sorts for home learning tonight.

GlassOfProsecco · 17/03/2020 21:28

I think the schools are trying to get through to Easter, but that's unlikely.

If it's the same system as the NHS, this is the preparation week & next week is when we expect the shit to hit the fan for 3 months 😱

Itsmybirthdaytoday20 · 17/03/2020 21:32

I just can’t believe this could be our lives for months :(

SamSeabornforPresident · 17/03/2020 22:40

It's still so hard to believe. You find yourself thinking about going for a coffee or nipping to John Lewis at the weekend, and then remember you can't. Mumsnet folk will be delighted though, that only one person per household can go to the supermarket.

I0NA · 17/03/2020 22:47

We had an email from our kids school tonight asking if parents work in the NHS/ emergency services etc. So I’m assuming they will try to provide some sort of skeleton service for these children and maybe those on FSM.

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 18/03/2020 07:26

We’ve gone into self isolation this morning because I have a cough.

I0NA · 18/03/2020 10:43

Dentists are now stopping treatment with high speed drill and water .

Our local practice is now doing emergency work only until they work out what they can safely do.

dementedpixie · 18/03/2020 13:40

Schools closing by the end of the week

PineappleDanish · 18/03/2020 14:02

Just saw that. Huge worry for DS who is in S5 and rapidly approaching Highers.

He tells me though that the teachers have been preparing for this scenario and they have been setting up MS Teams software to help them all communicate. The internet really comes into its own in these situations.

WeAllHaveWings · 18/03/2020 14:18

SQA website very wooly. Appears exams still going ahead for now.

StormyClouds · 18/03/2020 14:22

The government have said that the peak of the outbreak will be in May and June, so I can't see how exams with hundreds of pupils in a confined space can possibly go ahead.

My prediction is that they will either try to set up some sort of online assessment system or just give DC their predicted grades.

WeAllHaveWings · 18/03/2020 14:24

if they go ahead there is a risk of invigilators cancelling last minute too due to personal circumstances.

WeAllHaveWings · 18/03/2020 14:31

hmmm news seems to have changed, is it all schools or just S1-S3?

PineappleDanish · 18/03/2020 14:32

Or a mix of predicted grades and the coursework already submitted. Bit of a disaster for DS but might just mean he can't relax as much in S6 as he'd hoped.

Lots of the invigilators used here are retired teachers who automatically fall into the at risk groups.

WeAllHaveWings · 18/03/2020 14:33

The Scottish Government and the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) fully appreciates the concerns of learners, parents and carers, schools and colleges. In the event of school closures, the Qualifications Contingency Group agreed that every effort should be made to ensure schools remain partially open to allow Senior Phase pupils to complete learning and be able to submit coursework, in addition to being able to open as examination centres during the diet, should medical and scientific advice allow.

WaxOnFeckOff · 18/03/2020 14:40

We might have a group of people who have cleared though the virus by the time of the exams who are able to fill in? If the rest of schools are shut maybe teachers (who are fit, healthy and not in risk groups) can be freed up to invigilate in other local schools where possible.

I'll be free of isolation on Saturday and whilst I work full time (which I'll be doing from home) I'd be happy to take a day or two off to help (don't have any DC sitting SQA exams any more). I'm sure I wont be alone.

Alittlewornout · 18/03/2020 14:51

@Wax I agree, I only work part time and I would be more than willing to help invigilate. Maybe big business could release some of their home workers for a few hours to also help invigilate. After all lots of these kids are their future workforce.

fascinated · 18/03/2020 14:54

But how will we know if we are in the clear without tests or any info about whether one gains immunity...?

WaxOnFeckOff · 18/03/2020 14:59

I've seen as many lovely stuff on SM of offers of help as I have seen stuff about people being utterly selfish.

I've seen teachers offering support to parents who might be trying to help with school work, random people offering to help families who might need support with lunches when schools shut. Also various groups offering to help with shopping etc too.

Our street has gotten together to pass phone numbers on amongst everyone so that folk have someone to help or even just to chat to. I've added myself but can't help in a physical sense until next week for obvious reasons. I'm thinking though that folks who have recovered are going to be a valuable commodity in our communities.

Itsmybirthdaytoday20 · 18/03/2020 15:00

So many people won’t be able to work now. Will the government just leave us without income?

WaxOnFeckOff · 18/03/2020 15:02

facinated I've had all the classic symptoms as well as having been in close proximity to a confirmed case, I expect that I have definitely had it even without being tested. I know that others may not be able to be quite so certain. I think we know that it gives at least short term immunity?
