CV in Scotland

(This probably will get moved to the CV topic but thought I'd start one in Scotsnet anyway).

Does anyone have info as to where the Scottish cases are and whether these are 'community gained' or direct exposure from a Cat 1/2 place.

Any thoughts on the impact for our youngsters due to sit SQA exams next month?

My DS is in his highers year. 2 emails from school last week suggesting self isolation for kids returning from Italian holidays in half term but quiet since then.

We have a 1000 strong FB group in our area leafletting all local streets with offers of help, picking up groceries, prescriptions, whatever. There are mulitple whatsapp groups, and loads of people are offering help. It's very heart warming.

WeAllHaveWings · 18/03/2020 15:05

Situations like this bring out the best and the worst in people.

Our housing estate has a FB group and someone is organising a get together at a local cafe for everyone to organise how they are going to support each other if full households are isolating. Anyone who dares to say, "eh, a get together of maybe 50+ people in a tiny local cafe, is that a good idea?" Gets told they are being negative and removed from the group 🤦‍♀️ I am sitting firmly on my hands 🤣

So 3 DDs lost hospitality jobs this week. As all my DDs are over 16 , and none of us have health conditions that mean I can't continue to be exposed, I will volunteer to work in whatever provision they open to DC of front lines services and vulnerable young people or invigilate. DH is public sector (no possibility of working from home secure establishment) so he will be working too. I will do what I can.

SamSeabornforPresident · 18/03/2020 17:06

I wonder if there'd be any room for laid-off hospitality staff (like the pp's daughters) to provide emergency childcare to help those who still have to go to work? Obviously you'd have to know them, as it's not exactly practical to get people disclosed, but it may work in some situations.

Lidlfix · 18/03/2020 17:30

DD1 has just been told she has passed teacher training as they have ended all placements and her teaching observations had all met standards. She is PVG'd . We should be making use of our healthy, willing you people. I will teach if I am needed.

JKScot4 · 18/03/2020 18:40

My DP has lost 90% of his bookings in 2 days; he runs an airport transfer business 😕
He has a trade but nobody wants anyone in their house or can afford work. Going to be a very long summer 😞

WaxOnFeckOff · 18/03/2020 18:44

@JKScot4 that's a real shame. I saw someone offering their van to do student home services. So basically doing trips to collect uni students and all their stuff and taking them home. Might be a bit of potential business for him?

As folk come out the other side of infection, he might find more opportunities for his trade work?

I'm needing stuff done that i've been putting off and after we are out of quarantine would be happy to get folk in.

JKScot4 · 18/03/2020 18:51

That’s a good idea about students, my own DD2 is staying away at uni and thankfully landed a full time care job.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/03/2020 19:03

Ds2 is a teacher, and currently he and several of his colleagues are self isolating - he has a cough, a bit of a temperature and tightness in his chest. He was already seeing his class numbers decimated - mind you, some of his pupils are no what you’d call keen on education, so some might simply have seized on it as a reason to skive - although that is moot now anyway.

Ds3 is at Heriot Watt in Edinburgh, and they have stopped face to face teaching, and his exams will be online. He has been working too - he does waiting and bar work, but that work has completely vanished. Though this was his ‘fun’ money (his loan and the money we give him covers the essentials) and I guess the current crisis is going to severely restrict his social life, so I’m sure he will survive! Grin. He may not be able to party as much or as hard, poor lamb.

OnTheEdgeOfTheNight · 18/03/2020 21:06

For anyone looking for work, I've seen lots of adverts for people to work in social care. They are worded as looking for people from any background. It might be worth looking into local agencies, care homes etc.

nicerainyweather · 18/03/2020 21:51

Couldn't they use CCTV cameras to replace most invigilators?

AudacityOfHope · 18/03/2020 22:03

The Tesco's in our city are desperate for staff to help restock shelves if anyone needs to tide over. Not sure if it's the same elsewhere but in Dundee definitely.

AudacityOfHope · 18/03/2020 22:03

Hi by the way Smile been lurking on this thread the whole time!

WaxOnFeckOff · 18/03/2020 22:12

I'm going to get DS1 on to these places as soon as we are out of quarantine - hopefully still jobs left.

bloodycv · 18/03/2020 23:51

I'm not at home, the DC and I are currently staying with my parents. Have been here for a few weeks (so everything was pretty cal when I left) but really want to get home and am terrified now that I'll not be able to get back. Meant to be heading home in the middle of next week. Journey will involve public transport. We do not have enough stuff to see us through a lockdown!

JKScot4 · 19/03/2020 06:38

@bloodycv
Even in a lockdown supermarkets and pharmacies will be open.
My DD2 is using the bus to work, still running but quiet.

BogOffWinter · 19/03/2020 08:17

Could someone tell me what a lockdown in Scotland is likely to be like? If supermarkets/pharmacies etc are still open does that mean we’ll be able to leave the house to go there? Or will it all be online?

Obviously if it came to any of us getting sick we’d self isolate, it’s all this waiting to see whether we get sick that’s causing problems. We’re social distancing atm, kids are already out of school as two of them have had previous issues with respiratory related illnesses but we’re going for walks around the park and keeping distance from others. Gotta say I’m going a bit stir crazy already though, I miss human contact. It’s hell of a lonely round these parts.

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/03/2020 09:26

Well, online is currently a no go. In Spain and Italy still allowed out to shops.

I0NA · 19/03/2020 10:00

We will still be able to go out to shops, pharmacy etc.

Jodri · 19/03/2020 10:01

My dd1 boyfriend got back to Spain before the lockdown. Apparently his mum and dad are working from home doing online classes (both in education). His mum has been out to the supermarket and butchers (not sure if they need a permit). Police are present on the streets and can stop and ask you where you are going and are using drones to patrol in big cities. All celebrations for Easter have been cancelled. His town is normally quiet during the day and busier at night but obviously at night no one is going out and folk are keeping yo themselves.

LoopyGremlin · 19/03/2020 16:12

So that’s the exams cancelled. Heartbroken for many students who have been working hard for the last year.

Itsmybirthdaytoday20 · 19/03/2020 16:24

Do you tbink we will go the same way @Jodri?

Jodri · 19/03/2020 16:46

@Itsmybirthdaytoday20, goodness not my decision to make, hope not.
I think folk don’t realise that even if they are not in the most dangerous age group or have existing health problems and if something happens where they or one of their loved ones need an ICU bed (heart attack, stroke, accident, whatever..) the bed might already be occupied.

Lidlfix · 19/03/2020 17:49

Heartbroken for my DDs and many pupils who were starting to improve steadily but won't have the chance to show it SadSad

dementedpixie · 19/03/2020 17:51

My dd wont be able to finish her art portfolio for higher and was trying to improve her maths mark from her prelim score. It's a shame
