Hello all,

I’ve recently had a bit of a quizzical, unpleasant situation in my dating life, and would love some thoughts and perspectives.

I recently met a new guy through a walking group that I’m in. We’re both in our mid 30s; he’s a couple of years younger than me. We met briefly at a couple of the group walking events and then we started texting. He asked me to meet up one on one, which I agreed to.

He took me out for lunch. I think he had a nice time since he was happy to stay for 4 hours and mentioned afterwards that he’d like to do it again. I found him interesting as a person when we met up, however I didn’t feel much like we connected- things seemed to revolve largely around him and he didn’t ask me much about myself at all. I was willing to see how things go however, so was happy to keep engaging with him for the time being.

Our date came at a time when he was preparing for a big walking challenge that he was going to do a few days after. This was the main focus of our conversations on the date as well as in the days following, in which I was being very supportive. He was raising money for a charity in the challenge, for which I had also donated previously, about something that affected “someone he knew well” but he was reluctant to say who this was during the date, which I had hoped he would (I already knew a bit of the backstory from his Just Giving page when I had made a donation myself previously). Nevertheless, I was being very supportive in the lead up to his big day and he seemed to love sharing with me how his prep was going and all, taking lots of pictures on the day too and updating me through the challenge, again for which I was being supportive and present.

However, in the week following this big challenge that he did, he was a lot less engaged with me. Texts from him started to get infrequent, he stopped watching my social media stories and my messages were going unread; he was doing what seemed like a slow fade. This was over several days rather than in the immediate aftermath where ofcourse he would have been tired and needing to recover. It made me feel as though he may have just wanted me around as a source of emotional support for the big walking challenge and that he then didn’t need me anymore when it was done. What reinforced this feeling further was how he had said before the challenge that we would definitely arrange another meetup together “as soon as he can walk again after it”, but he made no mention of this at any time that week after the challenge despite going out for another social occasion with the walking group (they had a drinks night on which I couldn’t attend).

After seeing this indifferent attitude play out for a few days, I thought I’d gently broach the way I was feeling with him, to check whether this was still something worth investing my time and energy into.

He reassured me that yes things were still very much on and that he was looking forward to seeing me again, that he was just tired that whole week following the challenge, which was all I needed to hear. I apologised for not being more understanding about how he must still be tired from the big challenge, wished him a good recovery and returned his feelings in that I was also looking forward to seeing him when we could too.

However, the next day, he appeared to do a U turn. He criticised me for feeling the way I did and said it had now given him doubts himself about whether he does want to see me again or not.

Since all of this was over text, I suggested that we have a chat on the phone so that we could clear up any misunderstandings that may have arisen on both ends over message, especially given that we had only really met and properly spoken once. He ignored this, so I thought I’d explain myself further over another message the next day and say that unfortunately, I have had a couple of experiences in the past where men have tried using me and my companionship to get through certain things in their life (such as a divorce as was a recent experience), so I just wanted to check that we were both on the same page with things here, that was all.

My tone was gentle and polite but this message seemed to anger him further however, and he again accused me of feeling the way I did and for insinuating that he may have been using me “which shows that I really don’t know him at all”. He then blocked me.

I am left quite confused by how just expressing my feelings and a perfectly rational concern, which was squashed nicely at first before being used viciously against me all of a sudden for no reason, led to this person completely cutting me off. Even if my concern was indeed unfounded, why not just reassure me with maturity and let it go at that, rather than cut me off over ‘not knowing him well enough’? Surely he would know that we had only met once…

Would love some perspective. Thank you

He's a self-absorbed twat. Bullet dodged.

Whoddathoughtit · 22/09/2026 23:49

Kindly OP, ask yourself honestly why you’ve spent so much energy on a guy who showed little interest in getting to know you, who you said you didn’t feel connected with and was also stroppy and rude to you after one meeting. Raise the bar seriously x

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 22/09/2026 23:53

Good grief.

One lunch with this self-absorbed twat and you're wildly over-analysing everything in this way.

Just block him. He sounds insufferable and not worth your notice.

muggart · 22/09/2026 23:56

i think you correctly identified that he was fading you out. he didn’t have the gumption to say so, but when you vocalised how he was behaving he used that as an excuse to turn it around on you and blame you so he had an escape route. He’s cowardly and avoidant. better off without!

bunnypenny · 22/09/2026 23:57

Christ OP. It didn’t work out and ask yourself why you wanted to use AI to make yourself sound as you have come across.

BibbityBoppityTwo · 22/09/2026 23:58

You are going out of your way to try to resolve things with someone who from the first date your instincts told you was self absorbed. All subsequent behaviour has confirmed your instincts were right.
Repeat after me: “I do not give a toss about this loser and am not going to give him another thought.”

TheSlantedOwl · 23/09/2026 00:00

When you realised he was fading you out, you should have left it there. No messages at all. He was obviously ambivalent at best at that point and didn’t want to be drawn into analysis of your/his feelings.

He sounds very boring and self absorbed and you’ve been lucky to have been dropped OP! The key learning point is - next time cut your losses and keep your own counsel.

Erm I’m not sure what gave you the wrong impression that I used AI? Are paragraphs that rare these days 🤔

To those that are saying I should have dropped it at the slow fade, I could have left it but I do like to have certainty as to help me move on. I’m glad that I did see this through in this way because it showed me that this person is not worthy of anymore of my time or attention😠
Insufferable indeed!

I’ve seen relationships of five years split up with less analysis than this.

Thank you, this was my thinking too, he needed an excuse and this was a way to do it without looking like the bad guy- play the victim!

Then again, I don’t get why he was initially willing to reassure me of his interest when I did come forward with calling this out and not just do it then and there? Instead 48 hours later, he did a Jekyll/Hyde turnaround

He sounds self-absorbed and you sound over-invested. Learn from the experience and when someone is giving you mixed signals, don’t lecture them about how you feel or want to be treated, just recognise that they haven’t met your standards for those valid needs and move on. You give yourself your own closure.

HenriettaHippopotamus · 23/09/2026 00:26

I agree that with the previous poster who said he just used your concerns as a way out. He sounds self absorbed and you’re lucky to be rid of him.

Ive been like you in the past where I keep seeing someone who from the outset showed signs he wasn’t a good fit. Hopefully you learn from it and can leave earlier. You say you wanted a definite answer but him not answering and contacting you should be a good one. He has your number and knows where you can be found. People who are interested will contact you.

Sorry but I have to agree with this. You must protect yourself more in future (even after meeting someone who is nicer than he was). He sounds like a self absorbed knob. Don’t settle for guys who don’t show an interest in you and what you’ve got on, regardless of whether they have something big going on. Lack of interest in you especially at that early a stage is a screaming red flag for the immediate, medium and long term future. Feel the feelings OP but also take the lesson from it - namely, don’t be too nice. Sending a hug.

This. He doesn’t want to see you anymore and so he’s making it your fault so that he doesn’t have to deal with the awkwardness of explaining.

Never trying analysing some man, forget him
Only date a man if he can prove he will enhance your life, there's no reason to date a man otherwise.

Does it matter??
In early dating people can get the ick for any or no reason at all, and can decide they don't want to pursue something for the smallest of reasons. The bigger question is why you spent so much emotional energy cheerleading some guy you barely knew and who showed no interest in you as a person? Some solid reflections on your internalised belief system about men and women and their social roles would probably be in order.

fuschiaproudparrot · 23/09/2026 03:32

I think you got too serious too soon- too much drama.

UnderMirkwood · 23/09/2026 03:45

First comment nailed it. Don't waste any more time thinking about the twat.

PassTheCranberrySauce · 23/09/2026 04:07

Forget the solipsistic tosser. He sounds like a gargantuan bore, anyway.

Next time you go on a date, use your extensive analytical skills to work out the ratio of ‘him’ talk to ‘you’ talk, and dump accordingly.

BrickMaker · 23/09/2026 04:32

He just wasn't that into you and got defensive. To be honest people want the start of relationships to be fun and light. You got way too heavy by 'checking whether he was still into you' and constantly texting. Just let it go you, you deserve better than this and he sounds like a massive bore anyway. Sorry it messed with your head, that sucks.

Yep . This is exactly what I was going to say . You’re intuition was correct op

BeethovenNinth · 23/09/2026 06:01

I actually think he is just totally self absorbed and self interested. Dull dull dull: bullet dodged and move on. Does this mean you will
still see him at the walking group
though?

SoBoredOfSelfDoubtHowToGetOut · 23/09/2026 06:06

What a boring man.

You have to be his audience as he drones on and on about his selfless fundraising?

How tedious. And his teenage hot and cold behaviour. Tell him to bore off and block him.

Your peace and serenity is not worth losing over some twerp like this.
