Hello, its my first time posting anywhere and I hope this would be a right place. I'm sorry in advance for any mistakes; English is not my first language.

I'm 26 years old woman, my parter is 30 years old male. We are from different countries and are currently long distance but we've been in a relationship for 2 years now. We are of two different political sides, im more left leaning he is more right leaning. I'm an atheist and he was never really religious but recently he said he is finding comfort in God and is becoming more of a agnostic/starting beliving person. I'm a child-free person while he said he would like to be a father but its never explicitly been said that he wants to have kids. I'm pro-choice and he is only okay with abortion is extreame cases. As you can see our political views does not align in a lot of ways. I could spend even more time pointing out the differences. When we are together and not talking about anything politics/religion related we are the happiest couple ever. We had some minor disagreements on some unrelated topics but they ususally get resolved quick anda are mostly misunderstandings. When it comes to the other topics however, things get very bad very quick. Full blown fights, insults, threatenings of breakup or even actual short break ups, we had 3... Honetsly, every fights its getting more exhausting. We alwasy come back to the good time util another political issue is being brought up. Recently he's been very vocal about preserving white race, he is a big beliver of a replacment theory. After some relatively peaceful conversation, I came to an understanding he wants more white children to be born, more people to become more religious and more people to become conservative. All which im not. I'm not religious, dont want to ever become reigiou and carry some trauma regarding this. I dont want to have any children, dont want to be pregnant and the idea of even an accident terrifies me, I'm also not good with kids and not a kid person. I'm not consrvative and wont become one either... After seeing some of his instagram repost recently, I'm starting to get suspicious he is getting more and more alt right, saw some post that comments carried a lot of misogynistic takes, like how women should have their voting rights removed, full with racism and anti LGBTQ takes, the posts themselves are never of the severty or content that comments carry but the vids are often milder takes of them. After seeing a lot of that it feels like something changed and broke inside me. I'm terrified he might wnat to convert me during our relationship, maybe make me have kids, it is all gotitng to the point I rn feelemotionally numb, I dont want to have intimacy, I dont want to hang out but I'm too scared to talk about any of my concerns. I dont know what to do. He never outright said any of the things, he supposedly doesnt belive in taking away voting rights or anything like that but the fear is juts lingering. Is there a possibilty im overthingking everything or should we sit down for an actual conversation with risk of a big fight or breakup? Our relationship was always amazing outside of that, he healed a lot of parts of me as well as I helped him, I want him in my life. Exept it feels like i want the nonpolitical part and not full package. From his perspective he says my beliefs are not important to him that they are nto matiching cuz im more than my beliefs, Is it really possible to be able to seperate a person like that? I'm lost...

‘your beliefs are not important to him’ kind of sums up everything here…

it sounds like your beliefs are not important to him because he believes his own beliefs are the superior ones, hence the arguments rather than rational conversation.

your beliefs are very important, and your relationship is only amazing when you do not dare to question him and his ideologies.

I could not be friends let alone a relationship with anyone as you’ve described, stand by your principles and get rid. The political climate of the world means political issues can not be avoided…

Livpool · 21/09/2026 12:23

He sounds awful, in every way.

Om83 · 21/09/2026 12:28

Have just read your other post- you sound in a very vulnerable position and have formed this attachment to an unsuitable person who has shown interest in you. you sound like a lovely rational and normal person so there will be others out there for you!! you are worth more than this.

you can be grateful to him for what he has done for you in terms of your confidence, but maybe think about that saying about people coming into your life for a reason, season or lifetime-

I think my partners belifes are affecting my feeling for him

Every relationship doesn’t have to be forever. He was a Mr right now and now he isn’t. You had a big part to play in your healing, don’t jeopardise it by staying in a situation that will set you back.

I want to be loved... I come from a very abusive househhold, I was abandoned by my supposed ffriends when my mental health failed and pushed me to self-harm. No one was ever romantically interested in me, except a very creepy guy who has also fuelled my fear of men and strangers... he was the first person who ever loved me for me... i dont want to be back in this lonelies and isolation. he helped me build my confidence and new friendships. Hes basically all i have

Ok so this bit explains a lot. but just wanting someone to show you (some semblance of) love and being willing to accept anything in return is going to see you end up in abusive or toxic relationships. You need to go to therapy and work through this. This man isn’t the way to love and happiness.
It is not loving to believe the things he believes about women (you)

You seem worried if you should just accept having different views so let’s park if his views are right or wrong (they’re abhorrent fwiw) for a moment, and instead just look at some facts

  • disagreements turn into huge arguments with threats to break up so communication is poor
  • you don’t want children and he does so there’s no real future where you’re both happy
  • you don’t want to be intimate
  • you barely know each other in person
  • you’ve broken up multiple times already and the relationship isn’t steady
  • the relationship being so toxic will be feeding childhood wounds and making you feel worse.

"Recently he's been very vocal about preserving white race, he is a big beliver of a replacment theory."

So he's a racist Christian-nationalist.

Run a fucking mile

Thank you everyone for commenting and for kind words and the reality check... I think I'm still a bit in a denial to accept some but I read every response... Now I need to sit with myself and think. Lots of thinking. I used to go to therapy but I finished it before I entered this relationship. I didn't add also that I'm demi sexual so the lack of comfort with him recently killed any sexual attraction I had for him... It's going to be hard but I found a good review therapist some time ago, just was collecting funds for the appointments... I don't know whats going to happen or what I I'll end up but thank you for all the responses, all the explanation and words both kind and critical ones... Thank you.

Your confidence must come within. You need to learn to like yourself, love yourself - you shouldn't get your value and self-worth from someone else. At the very best it puts pressure on them to carry you (very unfair on them), at the very worst it leaves you incredibly vulnerable to abuse and taken advantage of. Relationships should be even to be healthy, they should be shared goals, values, based on kindness and love. He's not showing you this is he? Certainly shouldn't need you begging.

Please, ditch this man. It is far far better to be alone than be with a person who is wrong for you. Then get some therapy, get out and try and live life. You can make new friends, you can make a life for yourself but it takes work, work on yourself and work to get out there. You need help with your self-esteem, but that should be professional help. Until you reach some semblance of liking yourself, confidence and feeling at peace within your own skin, please don't date. You need to look after you and protect yourself.

My partner and myself are very different. She is a big fan of Margaret Thatcher; whereas to me, she's the Devil incarnate! She voted for Brexit, I obviously didn't. She abhores religion, I have a more live and let live approach to such things. However, despite our differences, I've never thrown a petrol bomb at her and she's never used a water cannon or rubber bullets against me either! We're very different but we're still together.

The biggest thing he did to me that hurt me was telling me I'm a monster with demons inside me bcos I support free abortion and value the woman's life more than a fetus... Which is harsh to say I understand from my part but yeah...

I don't think you should let politics decide your relationship with anyone. The media has everyone at each other's throats for their own gain. Best just to agree to avoid the subject completely. Or, if you're really brave, be prepared to have a proper debate and really listen to each other's views.

DH and my friends have very different views (yes we have shouted about it). It's all down to what we've read. But in the end, they're all good people. I refuse to let media control my relationships with others. Also, people's opinions change over time. Their core generally doesn't. So if you believe him to be a genuinely good man, I'll stick with it.

I would call out his name-calling because that is low behaviour. See his response.

However, if he wants kids, and you don't. Then I'm afraid there's no future for you as a couple.

I completely disagree. I could not live with someone or even be friends with someone whose values were so opposed to mine.

"Full blown fights, insults, threatenings of breakup or even actual short break ups, we had 3... Honetsly, every fights its getting more exhausting"

Plus "very vocal about preserving white race, he is a big beliver of a replacment theory".

The man is a wanker. Get rid of him.

Get yourself a nice therapist or counsellor and work through both your feelings in this relationship and the religious trauma. Stay single for a while and focus on your own safety and health.

This!

I see it said on here that you shouldn't let politics spoil a relationship. I disagree completely. I think your political leanings are based on your values as a human being, and I could never be with someone whose politics were directly opposed to mine.

Quite apart from all that though, he's just an awful person so dump him and quick.

I absolutely agree. Ditch him now.

SmashThePatriarchy · 21/09/2026 18:49

I mean it isn’t just a slight disagreement over white or brown bread. He is an out and out racist and your values don’t match. Get rid.

Nishnash · 21/09/2026 18:54

OMG,love if I were you ,I would have left.So many red flags...please leave this man and never return.

ButtercupYellow26 · 21/09/2026 18:55

You are not compatible at all. This relationship has run it's course.

RedToothBrush · 21/09/2026 18:57

This isn't a healthy relationship which is going to last.

You are not compatible. End it before it gets anymore abusive.

A man who loved you, wouldn't do this even if they disagreed with your politics.

The biggest thing is you don't want kids. He does. He will bully you into them and prevent you from getting an abortion or being abusive if you do have one.

This is why you should split.

I have a feeling you won't though and will end up in a right mess.

ClaredeBear · 21/09/2026 19:14

Why have you not completely blocked him? Not only are you incompatible but by staying with him you’re supporting misogynistic, bigoted hate.

That's the thing, would I hear the things he say about all kind sof subject from a random person I know I would have most of the times blocked and reported... I think I'm too weak to leave. Too scared. I have some irl friends and coworkers but day to day he is essentially only person I talk with, I isolated myself after a big anxiety episode and I don't know no matter how hard I try to reconnect with any other friends or actually chat with anyone else.. he encouraged me to talk with other people a lot of times and was worried imma too codependent on him, he ended up being a bit codependent on me too. He has a very abusive mother that are in contact still and grew up in abusive household as well so it felt like two broken people found each other and will heal each other but it's getting harder and harder for me to see past a lot of the things ..

Thank goodness you are in a LDR . Imagine being under the same roof.
Ditch this man and find somebody who shares your values before he completely tries to brain wash you with his outdated ideas .
