DP secret debt - help

Headspangle · 12/09/2026 22:39

Named changed but been ok here for years. Possibly outing myself with this thread but I am in desperate need of advice.
Been with DP for 7 years, 2 very young kids plus one teen each from previous relationship.
since the birth of our first baby together we have had the usual common issues of being distant, life imbalance, resentment, just general trenches of having young kids. However despite our difficulties and arguments I still held onto hope that once the kids got a bit older then things would get easier etc.
well long story short I’ve found out only once pushed that he has secretly got himself into £25k worth of debt. I went for an affordability meeting as we had been talking about moving and upgrading etc so when I had to ask him about any debts i was dumbfounded with what he told me. In fact, initially he said it was £15k which was bad enough but actually turns out it was much more. He said it got out of control and was using credit cards while money was tight and that although it’s a lot he’s on top of it - I’ve seen the credit report and his score is good but it’s still a huge debt and means all plans for the future and savings for holidays etc are out the window while he pays it back - for what he said is ‘only 4 years’ …
im livid and heartbroken and don’t know what to do. We have a mortgage but are not married. I love him and want our children to have stability but how can I trust him - he was always going to try keep it from me. On the one hand he has said sorry and it was wrong etc but then when I was crying and saying how heartbroken I am he said nothing and has made no plan for how he is going to rebuild my trust etc. he even got angry when I said I can’t believe he’s done this to our family and stormed out.
move also been a single parent for years with jy eldest and I can’t bare to go through it all again and uproot our lives - I’d be forced to relocate and lose my job I’ve worked hard for as couldn’t afford where we live now slone and have no support near me.
thoughts? Please be kind.

Honestly I feel like it's moving beyond the amount of money and into the realms of trust now. How can you trust him when he can't be honest with you? He is also horribly gaslighting you. This is really really unhealthy. Not the basis for a relationship, he's fundamentally dishonest.
I personally could forgive running up a careless amount of debt as long as the person was honest, transparent and made an effort to go through things and make a financial plan together.
He's bolted rather than go through the statements. He should be sitting down with you for a couple of hours, going through the accounts online, so you could work out the "extra spending" and budget. He won't do that. He probably never will.
His credit score might be good now but if he's gambling you can lose everything. You can't trust him not to start running up debts in your name in the future because you have no idea what he's done with the money.
It's usually gambling, drugs or women in some form, he wants to hide it from you.
You can't trust him financially or otherwise.

How have things been with you and your DP since ? Do you trust him now? ADHD is something we’ve discussed before but I dunno 🤷🏻‍♀️

DP has been diagnosed with ADHD since this happened and on meds. It helps him in many ways but he is still not great with money. I don’t trust him and he did use his cc again since and not telling me (although for small amounts). Tbh I have a lot of love for DP but we will probably go separate ways once we can sell the house as I realised I can’t spend my life checking someone’s bank account regularly and parenting them. There are other issues too so it’s not the only reason.

Silverbirchleaf · 14/09/2026 12:52

25k is huge! A years wages effectively.

How is he paying it back? Has he consolidated it to one (low interest?) loan? Or are there debts still scattered on several cards? How much is he paying back, and how long will it take to clear? Has he changed his spending habits, or is he still frittering away money?

cakeisallyouneed · 14/09/2026 13:04

Headspangle · 14/09/2026 12:02

Sorry if this sounds stupid but I’m so confused right now. Does the fact he actually is on top of it and not in arrears count for anything? His credit score is over 900. I’m just weighing it all up and trying to understsnd if he has anything in his favour- like, it was a mistake but he is already paying back do not as big a deal type thing?😕

But how do you know he’s telling the truth that he’s actually on top of it? He lied by omission about the debt initially. Then outright lied that the debt was 10k less than it is.

You have a mortgage together, you are financially tied to him. You have a right to know. This is completely separate to how much effort he is putting in to fixing the problem.

BeenThereBackThen · 14/09/2026 13:52

He simply might have reigned in or paused the dodgy activities so for now is able to pay the minimum payments and keep on top of it.

But it was all out of hand as he oviously was still spending (along with paying miminum payments) all this time. At some point it will become unsustainable when you calm down and his dodgy spending activities resume.

He might even stop these dodgy activities but would you be happy to be tied to him and helping him pay it off if you knew it was racked up on gambling/drugs/OF/prostitutes?

You need to know where the money went, there is no other way.

LlamaFluff · 14/09/2026 14:01

If he’s willing to lose his family rather than show you a few statements that, according to him, are just innocent day to day spending, he’s clearly got something to hide and it’s not all
as innocent as he says. Otherwise he’d have already done it.

Heylittlesongbird · 14/09/2026 15:53

Headspangle · 13/09/2026 18:32

since we had kids it has been very difficult. There has been a lot of distance but similar to what lots of couples go through. There have been moments where he has been unkind thoygh and lied about smoking for example. Overall he is not a bad person but I would say emotionally immature and his default mode is to be defensive.

When you say he lied about smoking, how much is he smoking because that will add up very fast?

BodyBoarder · 14/09/2026 16:30

He's hiding something, possibly gambling.

I think I could forgive my partner this, probably because it would be out of character, but I couldn't forgive his refusal (and significant delay) to showing you the statements.

You can't make him show you, but you can set your own boundary. That you're not willing to be with someone that is so obvious hiding something.

Whatever it is is probably still ongoing. And maybe some other lies thrown in to help him cover up whatever he's hiding.

It’s not stupid. I don’t think anything you could ask would be stupid at this point.

You’ve had a huge shock and the man you thought you loved has spent days lying to you and gaslighting you. On top of all of that you sound extremely sleep deprived Flowers

I’m sorry but you have no idea if he has it all under control or not. You know what he’s told you and he tells lies to your face all of the time. They aren’t even small lies.

What he’s told you so far about consolidating debts doesn’t ring true either.

He may be making minimum payments for now but it could all come crashing down at any moment. It only takes one thing, like redundancy or one of you becoming ill and you could easily lose your home.

I do have some experience of ADHD. If you’ve talked about it before, has he sought a diagnosis and medication? What does he do to try and self regulate? He can’t get you in this situation and blame ADHD for the cause if he’s never done anything about it. ADHD or not he should not be jeopardising all of your futures like this.

And you already know that people with ADHD are more likely to be drawn to risky behaviours, like drugs, gambling or promiscuity, especially if they’re doing nothing to help them regulate.

UnwillingAdvocate · 14/09/2026 19:49

Janet345 · 14/09/2026 09:36

Maybe a couple of thousands on a credit card is not the end of the word. But racking up half your annual salary and hiding it from your partner is a huge red flag imo. It will impact your next 3-5 years on a daily basis

Shame? Embarrassment? Humiliation? Fear your wife will dump you? The reason people keep it quiet is as I said, the stigma. You drown in debt for no fault of your own and you’re diseased. Debt isn’t a crime.

Headspangle · 14/09/2026 21:32

Ive asked him to stay somewhere else for a few days so I can have space. So he has gone no objections. Finally managed to have a level headed convo with him before he left. He said he does understsnd why I need to see everything and that he will show me. I explained even if that happens I can’t promise it will work as he’s damaged my trust so badly . I repeated I can’t wait much longer and that it is feeling more and more like the relationship is over unless he repairs quickly . So will have to see what happens next

He’s probably trying to work out if there’s any way he can doctor the statements

HambleTheDoll · 14/09/2026 22:07

He knows it’s game over when he shows you so he won’t show you and he’s hoping you’ll stop asking.

Exactly. He’s glad to be out of the house to give him time to plan this type of shit.

He’s a gaslighting cunt.

Princessfluffy · 14/09/2026 22:09

has he explained why you can’t see the statements immediately? Because that makes no sense unless he is hiding something pretty awful.

He's probably hoping the op will forget all about it and they can brush it all under the rug. mean op making a big fat fuss over nothing.

@Headspangle the amount of threads on here where posters have helped their partners to clear secret debt, only for the partners to go onto run up huge debts again... makes me think your partner will not change especially as he's refusing to be transparent now.

He said he does understsnd why I need to see everything and that he will show me
so why the hell doesn't he just shut up and show it for God's sake??! How you haven't bludgeoned him with a blunt object out of frustration is beyond me.

Specialneedsnightmare · 15/09/2026 04:34

He's playing for time. Otherwise he would just show you and end your frustrations. He's desperately trying to find a way to cover himself. Sorry op but he is hiding something huge.

cordeliavorkosigan · 15/09/2026 04:50

He has spent 700-1000£ monthly and it was not for bills or food or DC clothes or his own clothes, you'd have noticed. He's now trying to find a way to doctor the statements, edit all the PDFs or htmls or something.
He can't show you because you'd be even more upset if he did.
You're madly trying to reconcile what you want, which is for there be some way for this not to be happening and for it too have been a genuine mistake, with what is evident to you (the above), and the dissonance is costing you sleep and peace of mind big time.
I'm so sorry this happened, op.
But the fact that it sucks so much doesn't mean it's not the truth. He is hiding something worse than just losing £ 25k .

Kosenrufugirl · 15/09/2026 05:02

Headspangle · 13/09/2026 21:35

He’s now saying he has to check the statements first and that he will show me in time. He wants to understsnd what happened with the money first? I’m walking round the house like a jibbering mess - crying constantly, so distressed and he is prolonging this…
please tell me people who left that it worked out in the end? That you are happy? I was planning our future days ago., imagined getting old together etc and now my
world is being torn apart.

OP, it does sound he has a secret.

However I am not sure that him simply showing you the statements will solve the problem of a breach of trust and confidence.

This is what you need to focus on, imo. How can your trust and confidence can be rebuilt.

I think you both need relationship counselling.

If he refuses, go on your own, you will still get the benefit of talking through your feelings and deciding on the future.

Ultimately, you have no control over anyone's thoughts, feelings and actions, only over your own. It's a distressing situation to be in. Please don't give your partner more control over your state of mind that he already has. Please seek counselling from whatever source you can find.

I hope it helps

I agree completely. The pain will still be there. It keeps hitting me like a ton of bricks , plus all the what ifs- how far would it have gone? He wasn’t planning on telling me. Counselling together or as individuals is essential. For couples counselling he will need to arrange that though, I can’t do any more

DiggerLily · 15/09/2026 07:47

So sorry you are going through this OP.

One really strong piece of advice: given how incredibly reluctant he has been to show you the statements, I would not accept a pile of printed statements as sufficient proof of where the money has gone.

Documents can be edited, transactions can be removed, screenshots can be selective etc. If transparency is now a condition of you even considering continuing the marriage, I think you need to actually sit next to him while he logs into the relevant banking/credit card accounts and look through the transaction histories together. Not statements he has downloaded and prepared beforehand.

And I think there is a much bigger question here which I’m not sure you are fully allowing yourself to ask yet - where has £25,000 actually gone?

You’ve said that towards the end of the month you were sometimes having to put food shopping on your overdraft because there wasn’t enough left in the joint account. You paid for your family holiday from your own savings and he is repaying you £30 a month. Your children are wearing hand-me-downs and inexpensive clothes.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of those things, but they paint a picture of a family living relatively modestly and watching the pennies. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to you, £25,000 has apparently been spent somewhere else.

If his explanation is that this all arose during one year of maternity leave, £25,000 divided over 12 months is about £2,083 every single month. That is an enormous amount of additional spending, every month, on top of your normal household expenditure.

If £2,000 a month were being spent on clothes, meals, things for the house, the children, family activities etc, surely you would have seen the benefit of at least some of it. There would be things to point to.

So before accepting “maternity leave” as an explanation, I would want to understand exactly what that means. Was the family genuinely short by £2,000+ every month? What was your household income before/during maternity leave? What bills increased? What exactly did the credit cards pay for?

Because if you cannot see where £25k has gone, then unfortunately you do have to consider spending which wouldn’t necessarily be visible within the household — gambling, subscriptions, online spending, another debt being serviced, cash withdrawals, adult services, or something else entirely. I’m not saying it is any of those things, but his refusal to let you see the transactions means you currently cannot rule anything out.
And transferring it to 0% is sensible financially, but it only deals with the interest. It doesn’t answer the much more important question of how £25,000 was accumulated without you knowing.

Personally I wouldn’t even be making decisions about forgiveness yet. I’d be making decisions about facts. Full disclosure of every account, every card and the complete transaction history first. Then you can work out what exactly you are being asked to forgive.

Not only will the pain of what he has done, twice now, still be there but the fear that he will do it again will never leave you.

I personally couldn't live like that, and he would have to be a perfect man in every other respect before I could continue this relationship and from what you've written about your relationship since the children were born, he isn't.

I'm not sure I understand why you now want to see the statements before you decide whether the relationship can continue. The fact that he hasn't shown them to you yet is a clincher. There something seriously bad in them.

I'm sorry he's turned your world upside down. Well done for asking him to leave.

Headspangle · 15/09/2026 08:20

Thanks again for everyone’s input on this thread - it’s helping enormously and I’ve read every response.
The issue of where the £25k has actually been spent is still so abstract because he isn’t able to pin point when it all started just ‘about 2-3 or even 4 years ago’ ? I said well when did you get the first credit card and he can’t remember so that’s why he said he needs to look through his history first but I agree it would be better for him to just log into his account and let me go through it myself .

I’m sorry OP. The level of gaslighting he’s doing is fucking appalling. The fact that he can try and lie to you and try and make you believe that you’re the one at fault here should be enough for you to end the relationship Flowers

BeenThereBackThen · 15/09/2026 08:40

…but he can’t do that because… why?

Because he has things to hide. That’s what we are all saying.

And yes, at this point you don’t even know what you are asked to forgive, rightly pointed out by @DiggerLily

I know how it feels having your life turned upside down. I think quite a few of us on here do. You plan the future and then it turns out it’s all a mirage and a complete unknown as the version you created in your head is shattered. It can be sad and scary. But then you find a different version of it and work towards it, little by little. And it becomes less scary, it starts taking shape.

You are at the point where your future is unknown, it’s not what you thought it would be. You need to see those statements so that you can make the right decisions. If he continues hiding them, that’s clear information too.

Have you told anyone in rl about this yet?
