Last night had a few drinks with dhs mate and dh at home. All fine, come 12am another friend turns up.
I said I'm off to bed due to dc. Expected dh to be a hour or so no more.
Been kept awake all bloody night by the noise, miracle how dc slept through.
By then it was 6am and I heard dh trying to tell them to go he was tired and ready for bed. One of the friends was saying they needed to stay till they could get in their house till 8am.
By 7am I went down and could see dh exhausted, so I told them both to basically leave now we have dc to get up too soon.

One of the friends was annoyed with dh as the other latched onto them, they could easily of said they were going to bed and goodbye! Dh apologised but heard nothing else.

Am I in the wrong here?
And yes I am very tired and annoyed. Dh has gone to bed and I haven't managed to sleep a wink and I have a extremely busy week ahead. Angry
Just to say we in London so plenty of places open!

The younger generation are often martyrs to the children and the kids are (on average) growing up somewhat spoilt and self centred.

Absolutely, Jemima!

Couldn't agree more.

More than 'somewhat' self-centred, on my opinion.

DierdreDaphne · 12/09/2026 12:09

Never mind the impact on the kids, OP was kept awake by theae overgrown students making a racket. Absolutely would not want someone coming round at midnight and starting a whole second party, it's the height of self indulgence.

Luckily for me Inam really antisocial and id have been straight in with 'sorry no we're going to bed'.

OP ignore the twerps on here being contrary for the sake of it. I'd have been raging (and if I hadn't packed them off immediately, I d have been down again and telling them to take the party elsewhere by 1.30.)

DierdreDaphne · 12/09/2026 12:10

(our teenagers used to have friends over late and they were generally a lot quieter and more considerate than your dh and his dickhead friends !)

Chilly80 · 12/09/2026 12:11

You need to wake DH up so you can go to sleep

GoldenSandy · 12/09/2026 12:11

Hollyhobbi · 12/09/2026 10:15

Your asshole h is asleep in bed and he apologised to these rude and selfish friends?!!!’

I'd be banging pots and pans. All the painkillers would suddenly disappear and in their place would be a list of all the things he'd need to do to earn them back.
I probably wouldn't but it's a nice fantasy.

Id definitely be leaving him with the kids and taken myself off or vice versa.

Franxi · 12/09/2026 12:16

I can’t believe all these mumsnetters who have to take drugs to be able to stay up late! I can easily stay up to the early hours chatting with friends and have done. I still do it once in a blue moon, luckily my husband and children can sleep through anything! It’s just one night’s sleep, I really don’t think it’s a big deal, especially nothing to banish someone over!!

This is the problem with your generation - you wanted to have kids but weren't prepared to make any adjustments to your lifestyle, you believe adults are more important than children.
The younger generation believe children should come first because they are children.

Possibly the most ridiculous and inaccurate sweeping generalisation I have ever read on mn and that’s saying something.

OP the only thing that would annoy me is that my dh was such a wimp that he couldn’t throw his mates out by himself. I don’t think one person throwing an all nighter occasionally is a “go to your mothers while I calm down” offence.

BabooshkaHaHa · 12/09/2026 12:23

Bad night that neither you or your husband knew how to deal with.

It’s your home, your rules. Agree these with DH and then you’re prepared. Eg no partying after a certain time and acceptable noise levels when children are sleeping etc. Don’t allow other people’s chaos become yours.

It sounds like neither of you knew what was acceptable until it was too late. I would have gone downstairs and said “Time to wrap this up now. Sleep on the sofa if you need to or good night and safe journey.”

Yetone · 12/09/2026 12:24

OP, I don’t believe you are over reacting and I would be waking your husband up to do his share of parenting.

BillieWiper · 12/09/2026 12:28

How much coke did they do?

I agree. But I also had alcoholic parents like OP and I think the triggers can be specific and personal. Mine never stayed up all night or slept in hungover so that wouldn’t be a huge offence as a one off. But I can’t stand banging around or very heavy slurring, so I would react more to that than other people might

I’d bet decent money that the latecomer brought coke with him. Does your other half ever take coke that you know of OP?

100%. You aren't still awake at 7am after heavy drinking otherwise. Doesn't take much effort to tidy up, hardly like they want to waste any.

Noneverever · 12/09/2026 12:31

Of course they were doing cocaine. No-one can drink for 12 hours solid, mixing their drinks and be both very drunk and awake and coherent.

Till 8am with young kids in the house? Self preservation would mean you'd go to bed in order to get through the next day...unless of course you've been taking drugs.

Dh was falling asleep on the sofa. It was just drinking.

Are you really incapable of staying up late chatting to friends till the early hours without taking drugs? Once in a blue moon where friends are together in a house and there’s no time at the bar we do it. Just wine, no drugs.

They absolutely can. I go away with friends to a cottage twice a year and we’ll often open the drinks when we get there at 4ish and stay up till 6am talking and drinking.

BunnyLake · 12/09/2026 11:51

Do you have an anything goes house then? I don’t ‘allow’ smoking in the house and certainly no drugs.

Who said anything about drugs?

my partner doesn’t not “allow” me to have friends round.

Dumbledora8 · 12/09/2026 12:49

Why are people banging on about Coke? The OP hasn't mentioned Coke!!! Of course you can party without it ffs

Yep. Well I've never tried to stay up all night without taking drugs. I'd fall asleep?! I'm too old to bother now! 😭

What the neighbours think!? Is the the 1950s?!

Since when does not being a noise nuisance and being considerate of your neighbours, belong in the 1950s? WTF?

Eh? The discrimination and blatant ageism are writ large here. You're also very wrong. People over 60 are individuals, just like everybody else is, and most of us are not agreeing with this poster. Wind your neck in and try applying some critical thought before you speak.

MissCooCooMcgoo · 12/09/2026 12:56

My ex H once had a 14 hour birthday party comprising of a lunchtime BBQ and then drinking for hours and hours.

At 1am I had had enough when I found someone sleeping on my bed when I wanted to lock the door and get out the way. Lost my temper and threw them all out to protestations of not being able to get home.

Doesn't sound like my problem BYE

I was very young and put up with too much from that man.

YANBU op.

Ooh, bit harsh. And here we go with the boomer bashing 🙄

No sense of time when coke is involved.

Who mentioned coke?
