I can't stand living with DSS

DSS25 just graduated and is staying with us for the next few months before moving in with his girlfriend. He's been here about 6 weeks and it feels like 6 years. He's messy, noisy, virtually nocturnal, leaves his stuff lying around everywhere, and generally seems to think I'm his maid. He never goes out: gym 2 or 3 times a week. The rest of the time spent in his Playstation. Wats family dinners, but then cooks expensive stuff like steak which he buys just for himself, usually at 2am. DH and I asked him nicely to be tidier, and he got really defensive. I'm chronically ill and disabled as well as caring for DD13 who is autistic, not in school, and very anxious. DH works full time. Other kids are students and/or working.

If somebody else had written this asking for my advice, then I'd say he needs to get a job, to pay some rent, and to muck in a bit more with day to day life in a big family instead of behaving like he lives in a serviced apartment. But here's the stumbling block: he scares me. He got arrested twice 3 years ago for assaulting his girlfriend. She's taken him back, which is her decision, and he hasn't been arrested again since then. I'm not aware of any other violence from him towards her, but he did have a drunken fight with a friend about a month ago. I was in an abusive relationship myself aged 17-20 and DSS's assault was the same: strangulation. I believe that men like that don't change. It's never an isolated incident: it comes from a deep contempt for women. I've tolerated him for shorter periods like Christmas and uni holidays for DH's sake, but I hadn't anticipated struggling with old feelings and emotions so much. Maybe it's because he never goes out so he's in my space constantly with little respite. I am fucking FURIOUS that stuff I've dealt with in counselling a long time ago has been dragged back out and is hurting me again. My home doesn't feel like my safe space any more. Every time I clean all his mess off the hob or clean up his shavings from the bathroom sink, I can only see it through the lens of his inherent contempt for women and his utter entitlement, and it's making me disproportionately angry about the small stuff. Like "oh my god, there are pubes all over the toilet seat again and YOU STRANGLED YOUR GIRLFRIEND YOU PIECE OF SHIT HOW DARE YOU BARGE INTO MY HOME". Obviously this is not a healthy way to live, and I'm so stressed I can't think straight. How do I cope til January? Or do I tell DH that I can't? We said he could stay here for 6 months, and if I say he has to go then I don't see how DSS & DH's relationship could recover. Nor mine and DH's.

I wouldnt want anyone living in my home that had been arrested for domestic violence. Then to hear it was strangulation would have me screaming 😱. I feel he is a danger to you , your daughter and even his grandmother.

Don't hold up much hope for his job search if he has to declare this arrest . Even if charges were dropped , probably because his girlfriend is afraid of him . Very telling that neither his girlfriend's family nor his own mother will follow him to live with them . Think I would ask my DH to leave and take him with him if he thinks he is doing OK.

Thats a big offer-how much would it cost you/your DH to pay for his son’s separate rent/bills/food/council tax etc? Long term? I would be very worried that was his solution as it could cost thousands and just teaches the step son to behave badly, then your dad just pays for you to have a nice house on your own.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 01/09/2026 09:49

It depends where you are but rent is not cheap....

How much are you going to be financially.on the hook for jist to have the privilege of not living with a man who like strangling women!?!?!?!

He is a grown adult he needs to support himself via paid employment.

WelshRabBite · 01/09/2026 10:32

I’m scared for the gf.

Surely the only suitable solution here is for the DSS to live by himself or with his dad? Why should any women or children be put at risk?

I agree. But if two adults are both saying that's what they want, what can anyone do?

I hope you are ok @LoveMyHorse and that you are not being guilted to let him stay. Your Stepson could kick off at you and your DC and your husband needs to close his wallet and stop rescuing his son from the circumstances of his own making. His son is dangerous, I would be asking H why he even thought that a man who has previous for DV was a safe person to have live with you all? Why he couldn’t say outright no I don’t trust you won’t attack my wife or other children and even your mum can’t put up with you! You have no respect for anyone but yourself and as much as I love you I don’t trust you won’t kick off and become violent. Maybe your H didn’t know the extent of your traumatic past until you told him but he still should have known he was taking a huge risk letting his son move in even if the charges were dropped. You wouldn’t let someone babysit your children if you had heard that he/ she was a paedophile because you wouldn’t take the chance even if any charges had been dropped or no one had went to the police.

I have been through this. I actually showed them both the door as husband did not seem able to tell his son straight . Lasted two nights. Husband came back and son went back mum.

SpryCat · 11/09/2026 10:50

Her husband is willing help enable his son if his relationship ends because he beats up his gf and strangles her. He never put his foot down as he’d rather cajole him when his son was showing such disrespect and actively put @LoveMyHorse in a dangerous life ending situations for many months. He is treating him as a boy who is a bit unruly and not a grown up man who is a danger to women and anyone else he deems weak. They then found out son has been telling a pack of lies about hisgf living with her mum so he could get his feet under the table, is her husband frightened of him or feels whatever son does is fine by him and he will rescue him from the consequences of his own actions.

Good luck for Sunday Op, hopefully he'll leave without a big scene, but I doubt it

purplecorkheart · 11/09/2026 15:01

Good luck on Sunday. I hope it goes ok. Your dh needs to make it clear to his son that he will not be allowed live in this house again. Maybe consider putting away any sentimental items away in case he kicks off. Is there anywhere where you and or your dc could stay tomorrow night.

Sodthesystem · 11/09/2026 15:08

I’m sorry but I’m aghast that your husband would move an abusive man into your home.

It doesn’t matter that it’s his son, this man beats women. He really should have written him out of his life entirely. But he certainly shouldn’t allow this man anywhere near you.

Absolutely not op. And i don’t even thinks it’s “he leaves or I do” territoty. This is over, your husband has put you in danger and he doesn’t care a toss. He hates women just as much as his shitty son does. Get them both out.

That's my fear. And DH doesn't seem to get it. And even if he does go in two weeks as allegedly planned, what happens when he fucks it all up? Where does he go then? Back here?? I have a very strong urge to gather up my DCs and move out. DH can buy me out and I might be able to afford something for the three of us.

He gets it, he’s just a coward.
Either that or he doesn’t care and expects you to put up and shut up. If he wants to be a fool and believe in the best in people (honesty, not buying that) he doesn’t get to gamble with your and your sons safety in order to do so.

SpryCat · 11/09/2026 17:36

I would go out with your DC and let your husband sort out the move.
