Would these changes in my husband make others feel suspicious too?

Am I being paranoid, or does this sound like something is going on?
My husband and I have been married for 14 years and have two children (8 and 3).
Like most couples, we've had our ups and downs, but I'd have described our marriage as fairly stable until last winter.
He started working closely with a woman on his team, and almost immediately he was mentioning her constantly after work. I jokingly referred to her as his "work wife" and assumed it was just because she was new and they'd become friends.
Then in January he suddenly decided to start going to the gym every morning before work. This was completely out of character because he's never been interested in the gym before, but I thought maybe he'd just decided to get fitter.
In March my whole world fell apart. I developed health problems, my father died unexpectedly abroad, and there was a huge amount of family drama afterwards. I was completely consumed by everything that was happening and honestly wasn't paying much attention to anything else.
Looking back now, I've started noticing things that make me uncomfortable.
Around the middle of June I thought his perfume smelled different. I have ongoing nose and throat problems, so I wasn't sure if I was imagining it.
At the beginning of July I discovered he'd secretly started smoking. He admitted it when I asked and now smokes openly at home.
What's strange is that he's also gone from constantly talking positively about this female colleague to suddenly saying only negative things about her, which almost feels forced.
Over the last couple of weeks I've noticed other changes too. He keeps going upstairs for no obvious reason. He's become very protective of his phone. One day I walked into the kitchen without him hearing me and when he realised I was there, his hands actually shook as if I'd caught him doing something.
Yesterday he randomly announced, "I'm not going to the gym tomorrow." I hadn't asked, so I replied, "Why are you telling me? It doesn't affect me." It just felt like a strange thing to say out of nowhere.
He then spent the whole evening on his phone playing games and barely spoke to me.
Our sex life has changed as well. He used to have a very high sex drive, but now he often struggles to get or maintain an erection, and sex takes much longer than it used to.
Individually, I know none of these things prove anything. Together, though, they have left me wondering whether I'm missing something.
Does this sound like normal midlife changes and I'm reading too much into it, or would these changes make you suspicious too?

You start your post saying you had a good relationship until last winter. Was this genuinely the case, really?
His behaviour has changed a lot, yes. Cheating is a likely explanation for this, though none of us can tell you for certain. But it could also be that he’s just checked out of the relationship.

’Yesterday he announced “I’m not going to the gym tomorrow”. I replied “Why are you telling me, it doesn’t affect me”.
When you reach this level of poor communication with each other, your relationship is dead, regardless of cheating.
In a good relationship you might have replied “Great, we can have breakfast together” or “Great, you can help get the kids ready” or whatever.

Do some internet stalking of the OW if your husband won’t cough up any info.

Boreded · 22/07/2026 11:53

You need to address it fast before it becomes something you cannot recover from.

Sit him down and talk to him. Ask for him to show you the conversations he has with this lady from work, and if he is unwilling then explain to him that if it were platonic then he wouldn’t have a problem in showing you.

Ultimately if something is going on then it’ll become obvious when you try to have an adult conversation with him. His reaction will tell you everything.

If it is crossing a line you aren’t comfortable with then it needs to stop, but if he is a good man then he will know that and will stop. If he won’t then you have your answer

Could be, or could it be gym related enhancement drugs?

We had issues in the past. 3 years ago I was considering divorce. However, I got pregnant with my second child.
I have a plan, but it will take a time. I simply need to save money.

I think that this is where to put your energy and focus. If you have a plan to leave him, then whether or not he's having an affair is by the by, other then the risk of STI which you should mitigate however you see fit.

Don't waste your energy on what he's up to, channel everything you've got, all your brain space into how to get out of there and get the best outcome for you and your DC. The possibility of an affair is not really the point any more.

This heavily relies on the other party telling the truth.

How does he get into the gym? Most of the ones I’ve been a member of have a physical card or fob you swipe in with. If his is the same take it out of his wallet or off his key fob and see if he notices?

But also, do you want to force a break now? Because once you know and raise it with him you are setting in motion a chain of events and one of your posts has said you want to leave but not for a few years, so why take that element of choice away from yourself?

Wishihadanalgorithm · 22/07/2026 12:32

I’d be getting everything sorted according to the MN mantra of “ducks in a row.”

He’s clearly having an affair of sorts - or had one - so I think it’s time to take control of the situation.

Even if OP doesn’t want to separate right now, it’s good to be prepared if that’s where things are heading.

HarpieDuJour · 22/07/2026 12:38

I'm sorry you are going through this, OP. He sounds awful, and I hope you get an answer soon.
I don't want to derail your thread, but what happened to your sister? I can't imagine being with a man who would expect me to walk away from a bereaved child in those circumstances (and my sisters are really annoying!).

ThingsCouldBeEasier · 22/07/2026 12:40

The affair might have finished and she might have threatened to tell you.

Wow! Thanks for the link.I didn't know that such a thing existed. I just found a similar device on Amazon for €12.99 so have ordered two as they look so useful. They claim that the rechargeable battery lasts six months on one charge.

Sorry for the derail OP but getting back to the topic I reckon he is either having an affair or would like to be having an affair.

How? You are asking to see the chats?

he shows the chats and there is nothing wrong then fine, if he doesn’t then not fine.

if he ends the conversation and blocks the numbers then fine, if he doesn’t then not fine.

If he could lie to his wife without her being able to tell, then she wouldn’t be asking the question about whether he is cheating on here. FWIW I’m firmly in the camp of cannot be trusted and definitely crossing a boundary. She will know though by his reaction when being asked to see their conversations, either he has something to hide and he tries to, or he doesn’t have anything to hide and it’ll be apparent

Yes I was wondering what happened happened to your 12 year old sister when your dad died, as you said the mum left her as a baby. Poor kid - I hope she's got someone looking after her.

Social services are pretty much non existing there. Her grandma took her, but she is in her 80's ,so it's only a temporary solution. We are in touch every single day, I help with money when I can too.
My plan is to save as much as I can and go back home. I might need to adopt her in the future. If grandma will pass away.

I would give him a sleeping pill. Once asleep, I will take his finger and open the phone.

Octaviathethird · 22/07/2026 13:05

Can't you wait until he's asleep and use the face recognition to unlock his phone?

OkimADHD · 22/07/2026 13:44

Saddaughter999 · 22/07/2026 05:02

He has phone lock with fingerprint/face recognition, no chance.....

That in itself is a red flag and when I knew something was up with me and then partner

Matchalattecoco · 22/07/2026 13:45

Could you maybe buy an Apple AirTag and drop it in his gym bag/ car to confirm where he is going ?

Sorry you’re going through this x

Also ,I don't believe any person would have energy for this-he works from 7am. We live in London zone 4, his gym and workplace-zone 1. He wakes up at 4:30am, at gym at 5am (gym works 24/7, I checked). 5 days a week, he even travelled to central London twice "for gym" during his one week holidays.

I’m so sorry OP but I’d bet my house that he has OW. All the signs are there. Wished I’d paid attention to all those changes in my husbands behaviour instead of putting it down to his stressful job!
Travelled into London to the gym during his holidays ? Does OW live in central London by any chance ?
Put a tracker in his gym bag. You can pick them up for a few pounds now.
Next time he’s “playing games” on his phone, look at his watsapp and see if he’s online !!!
No need to be online on watsapp if only playing games.
You need to get into his phone!
I wish you all the best, it’s so very painful to discover your husbands cheating.

Eyes must be opened, I tried finger too, however, it looks like he's using different fingers for a lock- I did 3 and neither matched. He is very sensitive sleeper.

Yes, OW lives 15mins walk from their workplace, central London.

Gym and smoking are two opposite ends of the spectrum - ones promoting health, and the other is one of the worst things you can do for your health. They contradict each other.

A friend of mine put a tracker on her xh car and found he was meeting her parking near a fairly isolated cemetery (!!!) before work / precisely as s quiet place for car shenanigans /so seems like really mornings are prime cheating times…
Don’t do the tracker as it is illegal.

Get a small tracker, u can get them cheap and hide it in his car

LetGoLetThem1234 · 22/07/2026 14:25

If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck...

So sorry that you are in this situation @Saddaughter999

Make your plans whilst keeping your eyes open to gather evidence.

OchreRaven · 22/07/2026 14:31

Tell him you need to use his phone as yours is dead. Note his passcode as he puts it in. Then quickly add your fingerprint to his security in case he changes it after. Then when you have more time you can have a look at your leisure once he is sleeping.
