Would these changes in my husband make others feel suspicious too?

Am I being paranoid, or does this sound like something is going on?
My husband and I have been married for 14 years and have two children (8 and 3).
Like most couples, we've had our ups and downs, but I'd have described our marriage as fairly stable until last winter.
He started working closely with a woman on his team, and almost immediately he was mentioning her constantly after work. I jokingly referred to her as his "work wife" and assumed it was just because she was new and they'd become friends.
Then in January he suddenly decided to start going to the gym every morning before work. This was completely out of character because he's never been interested in the gym before, but I thought maybe he'd just decided to get fitter.
In March my whole world fell apart. I developed health problems, my father died unexpectedly abroad, and there was a huge amount of family drama afterwards. I was completely consumed by everything that was happening and honestly wasn't paying much attention to anything else.
Looking back now, I've started noticing things that make me uncomfortable.
Around the middle of June I thought his perfume smelled different. I have ongoing nose and throat problems, so I wasn't sure if I was imagining it.
At the beginning of July I discovered he'd secretly started smoking. He admitted it when I asked and now smokes openly at home.
What's strange is that he's also gone from constantly talking positively about this female colleague to suddenly saying only negative things about her, which almost feels forced.
Over the last couple of weeks I've noticed other changes too. He keeps going upstairs for no obvious reason. He's become very protective of his phone. One day I walked into the kitchen without him hearing me and when he realised I was there, his hands actually shook as if I'd caught him doing something.
Yesterday he randomly announced, "I'm not going to the gym tomorrow." I hadn't asked, so I replied, "Why are you telling me? It doesn't affect me." It just felt like a strange thing to say out of nowhere.
He then spent the whole evening on his phone playing games and barely spoke to me.
Our sex life has changed as well. He used to have a very high sex drive, but now he often struggles to get or maintain an erection, and sex takes much longer than it used to.
Individually, I know none of these things prove anything. Together, though, they have left me wondering whether I'm missing something.
Does this sound like normal midlife changes and I'm reading too much into it, or would these changes make you suspicious too?

It doesn't sound like he needs to be having an affair for you to have grounds leave him - the other behaviour is enough.

You worked overtime to repay your father's funeral while he has gym membership and spunks money on smoking. Did that in itself not cause a major row?

Are you not able to challenge him on any of this?

Regrading his gym clothes - he usually puts them straight to the washing machine, we have a "routine " to wash darks in the afternoon as my son goes to afterschool club and his sports costume gets washed daily too.

My dad was an alcoholic, minimal contact. However, the last few months before his death, he was at the hospice, he called me daily. My husband didn't like him and always said I shouldn't talk to him and shouldn't keep contact with my sister. My dad was her main carer, long story but her mum left her when she was still a baby.
I simply didn't expect any help from him regarding funeral.

This is really sad, OP. That's really the minimum you could expect from your husband and father of your children, support in this situation.

If you're starting a thread at 4.45 am. Then yes there's something going on.

He has phone lock with fingerprint/face recognition, no chance.....

He has to sleep at some point. Or you could try talking to him.

nonomo · 22/07/2026 09:41

It does sound like he was/is having an affair :/. There must be a way to find out where he’s going. Annoying that you can’t get into his phone. Is he driving or walking everywhere? Can you put a tracker in the car or in a bag or anything if he takes one?

I think you said there’s no way you can follow him due to work and drop offs. can you book the day off so you can do it?

Appreciate that the above all sounds psycho, but those are the lengths I would go to if I needed to find out because there’s no way he’s going to tell you.

He won't tell me.
The only one thing I can do - we used to work for the same company years ago and I still know couple of people who work with my husband (the same employer, different departments). I could try yo contact them.
I know her name, surname, I saw her photo on their workplace website, but I don't think I should contact her.

Don’t try talking to him. He’ll only deny it. Get your ducks in a row, get access to his phone and then prepare to divorce him.

Don't contact their colleagues, all that will do is give him the heads up and an excuse to be even less supportive, and more grumpy than he already is. I think you need to decide what it is that you want OP. Do you want to remain married o him even if he's not having an affair?

How about if it turns out that he is? His behaviour is his behaviour regardless of the cause, is this what you want for yourself and what you want your children seeing and going on to recreate in their own relationships?

Goditsmemargaret · 22/07/2026 10:40

I think you can assume he is and even if he's not - he's an absolutely rubbish husband. Do you want to stay married?

bettyrubble99 · 22/07/2026 10:41

"You talk about her alot for someone you don't like" then don't say another thing. Just look at him. If he asks "what do you mean by that" just say "what i said" and then back to nothing.
Silence usually freaks them out because they feel the need to fill it rather than sit in it.

We had issues in the past. 3 years ago I was considering divorce. However, I got pregnant with my second child.
I have a plan, but it will take a time. I simply need to save money.

Call his bluff and ask to see his phone. His reaction will tell you all you need to know. If DH did this I would be weirded out but I’d just sort of go ok whatever and pass it over. If I had something to hide, I’d freak out and get protective which is precisely how I think he will react. He’s having an affair, it’s pretty obvious.

In terms of the gym, not everyone’s body changes dramatically- it totally depends what he’s doing there. If it’s just cardio or light weights any changes would be subtle, not everyone does heavy weights to turn into a meat head! Or he’s not going and is seeing her instead of course.

I think the smoking is the weirdest thing of all, the two don’t exactly align. Oh I’ll start the gym to get fit, and I’ll also take up smoking!

I'm sure he's smoking because he's nervous.

Did he used to smoke?

I think he’s cheating. It has all the hallmarks of The Script.

Zone 1- someone on here will live near to the gym or even go to that gym! If you have the money hire a PI but do not mention anything to your husband. You appear very calm tbh - this will work in your favour.

Do you want to remain together regardless of cheating? If not this may be your reason - keep your cares close to your chest. If you ask him he’s likely to lie - The Script.

Notquitethetruth · 22/07/2026 11:03

He puts his gym clothes in the washing machine without you ever touching them? No way of you knowing if they are sweaty or dirty then.
You are going to have to address it directly with him. Stay calm, say everything you have said on here and tell him (not ask) you need to see his phone, right there. If he refuses, starts being evasive , deflects or starts shouting then just tell him if he cannot be honest then there is no marriage left.

Who decides to get fit for the first time ever by joining a gym and going daily only to suddenly decide to randomly take up smoking at an age when most people have either smoked for years and regret starting or have long given up?!
Everything is suspicious but that just struck me as preposterous.

I don't think you need a confession. There's definitely an affair or was one.

Conniebygaslight · 22/07/2026 11:29

She’s told him she’s pregnant?

Gardenisablooming · 22/07/2026 11:35

I think you need to muck up the laundry schedule.
Ime of ds's who use a gym nobody who uses one ever smokes...
