Would these changes in my husband make others feel suspicious too?

Am I being paranoid, or does this sound like something is going on?
My husband and I have been married for 14 years and have two children (8 and 3).
Like most couples, we've had our ups and downs, but I'd have described our marriage as fairly stable until last winter.
He started working closely with a woman on his team, and almost immediately he was mentioning her constantly after work. I jokingly referred to her as his "work wife" and assumed it was just because she was new and they'd become friends.
Then in January he suddenly decided to start going to the gym every morning before work. This was completely out of character because he's never been interested in the gym before, but I thought maybe he'd just decided to get fitter.
In March my whole world fell apart. I developed health problems, my father died unexpectedly abroad, and there was a huge amount of family drama afterwards. I was completely consumed by everything that was happening and honestly wasn't paying much attention to anything else.
Looking back now, I've started noticing things that make me uncomfortable.
Around the middle of June I thought his perfume smelled different. I have ongoing nose and throat problems, so I wasn't sure if I was imagining it.
At the beginning of July I discovered he'd secretly started smoking. He admitted it when I asked and now smokes openly at home.
What's strange is that he's also gone from constantly talking positively about this female colleague to suddenly saying only negative things about her, which almost feels forced.
Over the last couple of weeks I've noticed other changes too. He keeps going upstairs for no obvious reason. He's become very protective of his phone. One day I walked into the kitchen without him hearing me and when he realised I was there, his hands actually shook as if I'd caught him doing something.
Yesterday he randomly announced, "I'm not going to the gym tomorrow." I hadn't asked, so I replied, "Why are you telling me? It doesn't affect me." It just felt like a strange thing to say out of nowhere.
He then spent the whole evening on his phone playing games and barely spoke to me.
Our sex life has changed as well. He used to have a very high sex drive, but now he often struggles to get or maintain an erection, and sex takes much longer than it used to.
Individually, I know none of these things prove anything. Together, though, they have left me wondering whether I'm missing something.
Does this sound like normal midlife changes and I'm reading too much into it, or would these changes make you suspicious too?

Probably going to hers instead of the gym and she’s probably dumped him. Maybe he tried to pursue saving it and she’s told him she’s going to tell you if he doesn’t leave her alone.

They both doing early shifts, from 7am. Early hours is the only one option for him as he needs to be back by 4pm, we share childcare as I usually do an afternoon shifts.

Something is happening, even if it's only a mutual crush.

HelmholtzWatson · 22/07/2026 06:57

Could be an affair, but equally could be an unrequited crush. Given his behaviour, i'd say the latter is more likely.

Lampzade · 22/07/2026 07:04

Either he is having an affair and they are going through a bad patch or the affair is ‘going well’ and he is trying to distract you from finding out about the affair
There is no way that a man can attend the gym five days a week for several months and there be very little change in his shape
Together with all the other things that you have mentioned one can only conclude that he is cheating

Luckydog7 · 22/07/2026 07:05

It's another case for the Mumsnet detectives. If there's a bored local retiree/sahm available to follow him one day on ops behalf....

I always thought there's a vast untapped resource here. There must be a mumsnetter on every street in the country.

PragmaticIsh · 22/07/2026 07:12

Nobody takes up gym exercise five days a week...then takes up smoking.

I'd be repulsed by the smoking. It will also be on his clothes and will impact the children.

Blueberrybonanza · 22/07/2026 07:13

Definitely he has been up to something
Wonder if someone or her is threatening to tell you whats going on
Any friends or relatives likely to do this?

TooHotToBoogie · 22/07/2026 07:14

Chechez La Femme
If you want shot of him, get your divorce started now

Celticwonderer · 22/07/2026 07:14

He’s cheating all the way to Cheat Town!

ChelseaBagger · 22/07/2026 07:18

It does sound like he's lying, but the sudden heavy smoking and the actual shaking with nerves would make me think it might be work/money related. The smoking could also explain the erection difficulties.

I would go to his gym to enquire about taking out a membership yourself, and get chatting to the people on the desk - they should know him very well if he's in there 5 days a week. Although, if it turns out he's not there, you still won't know where he is.

parachutegirl · 22/07/2026 07:18

It’s probably ended and she’s threatened to tell you, that’s why he’s a nervous wreck.

wonderwhynot · 22/07/2026 07:19

Is his smoking in the corner of the garden a created ruse so that he has an opportunity to talk to her whilst in your proximity?

CrustyBread1977 · 22/07/2026 07:21

Complete déjà vu here as well! Including the early morning gym-going. Do they all use the same cheater’s manual?!

I'm ten years on now, and divorced, and looking back I wish I’d got someone to follow him. Private detective maybe. It wouldn’t have changed anything, but I’d love to know the truth and extent of what he was up to!

Divebar2021 · 22/07/2026 07:26

Are you seeing sweaty gym kit daily? My DH goes to the gym and I end up with his stinky kit on the kitchen floor waiting for the washing machine.

So has he been starting work at 7am and saying he's going to the gym before 7am, eg 6am?
I agree with those who pointed out that it's very weird to get so into fitness and also take up smoking. It's weird enough to suddenly become a smoker as an adult! Do you know if the 'work wife' smokes?

Sweetbeansandmochi · 22/07/2026 07:30

Hmmm I think your intuition is strong.

Can you be out and ask him to take a family photo, on his phone, then on the way home in the car, when you get in the car before he has driven off.

Say you want to see the photo.

If he makes up reason to not let you see then it’s strange, if he does, you can have a quick flic through.

nc42day · 22/07/2026 07:34

A non gym goer and non smoker starting a regular gym habit and then starting to smoke every half an hour? I'm not having that.
I think he met her and was all excited hence the mentioning her all the time, now something is actually going on so he's trying to put you of the scent by slagging her off, and he's grumpy and cant maintain an erection because he's stressed out about being caught. That would be my take, sorry.

macaroon8 · 22/07/2026 07:37

Is he stressed as workplace relationships are frowned up on and he's in a disciplinary for abuse if power? Esp if he's senior to her. So you will find out when he's sacked and will blame his sacking in the other woman's incompetence? It's a stretch I know

My exH used to go for evening runs and it wasn’t long before people started to tell me he’d been seen sitting on a bench talking on his phone for an hour or actually with the woman, holding hands etc.

B9waiting · 22/07/2026 07:40

Sorry Op, doesn't sound good. Hope you’re ok & have real life support.

redskyAtNigh · 22/07/2026 07:41

Just to offer an alternative viewpoint - is he depressed? Does he have issues at work or financially related? Have you relied heavily on him for support during your very difficult period? All these points (trying to get fit but not really achieving it and actually taking up smoking; jittery, nerves; issues with sex) would also fit.

The key point, OP, is why you have jumped to "something going on" as opposed to talking to him about his changes in behaviour and that you are worried, which might be a more usual first step.

Avie29 · 22/07/2026 07:44

I think this might go deeper than cheating, no adult would suddenly start smoking unless they are under immense stress and i doubt just a fling would cause this and he is not only making horrible comments about her to you he is also doing it at work, which she would not be happy about so i doubt the affair is still going on yet he is still extremely nervous and stressed, could an accident have happened? Does he have the snip? Or i would definitely be getting checked for STD, there is something more than just him worried you might find out about an affair imo.

Sadly this sounds like it

Treacletreacle · 22/07/2026 07:49

Has he given you any character assassinations? Mine started to have digs at me and was very snappy so one night when he was asleep i used his hand to open his phone. Turns out he had been having an affair with the neighbour around the corner.

popsiclesandpools · 22/07/2026 07:54

If you have his device pin you can set up your own fingerprint. E.g. "babe what's your password? I need to text my mum and my phone's dead." Use it to add your verification, and then expect him to change it after. Or if he's logged in on a watch / tablet / linked to a car.

Sleuthing isn't the healthiest option obviously, so apply your own morals too it!

If he's going to the gym regularly, what's actually in his gym bag? What's his workout routine?
