Were they at a karaoke bar? Otherwise it looks a bit sus

Heterosexual men- I would think maybe a mess up on karaoke or some public performance (darts, quiz, dragged up on stage by a performer)

Gay men I would assume it’s about a sexual encounter that wasn’t as good as they expected

Was the word 'performance' definitely used? It could be in any kind of competition they had, or karaoke, did they play football, table football, pool? Were they doing a public speaking engagement?

Is this your husband and another man in the group messaging? Were they absent from a group event at the same time?

Sounds like some pool/darts/arm wrestle etc. What exactly are you concerned about?

This could be an exchange after an important sales presentation/event - context is everything.

If the word 'performance' was used, and he hasn't been in an environment that would explain that (playing pool, open mic etc), then I would think that it related to sex.

Nothing because I have absolutely no idea of the context behind it. Unless you have good reason to suspect foul play I would not give a second thought, the message wasn’t for you.

Maybe the first was an arse with someone he hadn't met before? I mean I'm clutching at straws, but if you're concerned then you should ask. I'll guess you looked at someone's phone without permission. Which probably means you had suspicions to start with.

Sounds like they're talking about some type of sport. Was there any sport earlier in the day? Did the other man reply? It could have been sent to the wrong person, especially if someone was drunk when they said it.
If this is your partner just ask him. His response should tell you what you need to know.

If you want us to infer meaning from words with no context I think we'd need exact words.

It screams sex to me. Performance has pretty strong connotations IMO. I can't imagine using that exact word in anything else apart from if they were putting on some kind of theatrical show or involved in a major sporting event.

The whole text sounds sexual to me, anything else is clutching at straws. If you were crap at a quiz, singing, darts or whatever then you'd say that not 'performance'. No one apologies like that for not doing well enough at karaoke or in a pub quiz.

I think we need exact words and to know why you think it’s sex related.

Going out for a drink could easily involve darts, pool, pub quiz etc, how can you be sure none of these things happened?
