Dear god....is he coming on to me?

I have some photos someone wants.
I said:

I can be bribed with a few thousand quid.

His reply:
What I'd want for a few thousand quid I sincerely hope and trust you wouldn't sell me.

He has flattered me in the past in general ways, but I have just taken it as him being open and friendly.

Do I ask him what the hell he means? Not reply. Ever.

I see him often at a sports club. He is nearly 20 years older than me and married. I am in my 50s. FFS.

I think he was just trying to carry on the joke in a clumsy pervy old man kind of way. Just send him the picture!

No it wasn't you're fault, no we shouldn't have to think that hard about what we say to old men. But actually in the real world we do all the time. Next time I'd just send him the pictures without the extra jokes.

L4815162342 · 24/06/2024 23:02

You started it and I think he was just trying to joke back. I don't think he was coming on to you at all.

Just send some laughing emojis back followed by the photos of the event.

uneasyfeeling · 24/06/2024 23:13

In traditional cultures, joking around with men casually was discouraged seriously.

This thread is a good example why.

The relation between man and woman can easily be misconstrued especially given how lustful men biologically are. (All the modern feminists wanting to disagree - yes men are biologically wired that way 🙄)

And some men will not reply like that, because they are dignified or not interested, doesn't mean that thought didn't cross their mind.

Castle0 · 24/06/2024 23:19

Lol you started the cringefest with your opening gambit. If this is how you've been conducting yourself around him it's no surprise he's getting the wrong idea.

greenpolarbear · 24/06/2024 23:23

In the future, hit on 30 year olds instead of 70 year olds.

Somerandomerontheinternet · 24/06/2024 23:33

I think it just sounds like playful back and forth - silly rather than anyone giving the come on. That might be accepted humour with some of his friends precisely because nothing is going on (but it’s not for you - or me if I’m honest although I don’t read it as sleazy unless there is other context. I’d ignore and share photos or if you want to keep light hearted I like @Agapornis suggestion.

Bumblebeeinatree · 24/06/2024 20:42

You said you could be bought and he said, he wouldn't be sold. And you think he's coming on to you? I think he was a bit shocked that you would sell yourself.

Edited

She said BRIBED for.

English comprehension - not even once.

BouquetGarni224 · 25/06/2024 00:49

K8ate · 24/06/2024 22:17

Seriously, get over it.
He’s a guy in his 70’s who made a light hearted comment.
What i find amusing in general with many women, is that if it was someone who was appealing to them, the response would be quite different.

That's a human thing, not a "women" thing.

You really think men don't react differently to things depending on whether the woman involved is sexually attractive to them or not?

Are you usually a bit of a misogynist.

FromBackHome · 25/06/2024 01:09

His reply:

That sounds creepy to me. He is old enough to be your father and he's married. I'd keep well away from the pervy bastard.

Newnamehiwhodis · 25/06/2024 01:11

I’d just ignore it and carry on as if it was a joke. It was in the tone you’d already established,

but I wouldn’t continue bantering with him.

yes, it sounds like he’s leaving a door open for you, should you choose to venture into affair territory.

so I’d make myself clear by never bantering again.

Opentooffers · 25/06/2024 01:12

"What I'd want for a few thousand quid I sincerely hope and trust you wouldn't sell me"
If you analyse what he said, he actually hopes and trusts that you wouldn't be selling him sex. I think you are getting het up over not much really. Tbf, you laid the path that this took by what you said in a way. You could tackle him about it being inappropriate if you want an apology.

You just stumbled across a group of Mumsnetters who don’t seem to be able to understand your post

Can I join the group who don't understand, too?
I can't make head nor tail of this thread.

Why would anyone ask to be bribed over a photo of herself winning at a sports event?

XChrome · 25/06/2024 01:28

Nogardenersworld · 24/06/2024 20:31

A 70+ year old married man made a ‘joke’ about purchasing you for sexual services and you’re flattered?

i would avoid him like the plague personally, but you do you.

Agree. A pervert.

HollyKnight · 25/06/2024 01:34

It would be funny if he wasn't talking about sex at all. Maybe he meant drugs or a gun. 👼

OP was just being silly and making a joke.

The man decided to make it sexual. He's a creep.

BigLizard15 · 25/06/2024 02:03

The guy is 70 and married. Personally the whole conversation doesn’t appeal to me or come across as flirty. But each to their own.

SecondTimeASquare · 25/06/2024 02:05

You went for the confident "I can be bribed for a few thousand quid"

Be honest op, I doubt you would have said this to a man twenty years younger, you would be afraid of him thinking of you as a dirty old cougar.

And you wouldn't have said it to another woman as she wouldn't have found it funny.

It was flirtatious based on the fact you are younger and you presumed he fancied you, it was banter, he gave the banter back, and now he's in the shed trying to get over his erectile disfunction.

You do realise men equate money with sex.

TheShellBeach · 25/06/2024 02:08

But why say you could be bribed?
Confused

Confused

I think she was trying to appear modest after coming first in the race and didn't want to be seen as wanting to be plastered on the front cover.

Stealth boasting with a touch of flirtation, topped off with the confidence of a younger woman peakocking infront of a septuagenarian.

You asked op.

EnglishBluebell · 25/06/2024 02:30

Gingernaut · 24/06/2024 20:37

"I have some photos someone wants."

I said

I can be bribed with a few thousand quid.

Why the fuck did you say something like that???

Either give him the fucking photos or explain why he can't have them

Jesus wept

Why dis you give him the opportunity to be dirty flirtatious??

Shut him down as efficiently as possible

Edited

It's called a joke. Some of us have a sense of humour and don't take everything so seriously.

SecondTimeASquare · 25/06/2024 02:44

Peacocking even 😅

this

And now feigning faux discomfort that she rattled his snake

OP fucked about and found out

Now will probably cry wolf/rape to the club and get the poor bloke ostracised

toxic fem energy here from the op

women like this are a danger to men

TheShellBeach · 25/06/2024 02:08

It's just a joke. He said he'd bribe the other woman for them. The OP said the other woman didn't have them but she could be bribed for a few thousand. She could have said for an ice lolly if it was a hot day. Or whatever. It's just a joke.

Then the creepy man made it sexual, as men so often do.

OPs done nothing wrong here. The bloke is a creepy perv.

grinandslothit · 25/06/2024 03:44

The entire conversation is bizarre

though maybe it would have been appropriate for a swingers club newsletter.

Wtaf? OP made a lighthearted comment. Zero flirting involved, just a joke. The man made it sexual.

This man is the issue, not the OP.
