Can you identify this mystery sock?

Just found under our bed. Not mine, looks too small to be his. I have done the laundry enough times to know his sock collection inside out and this is a rogue one. Thick sock, mens or womens? Anyone recognise it? Feeling very freaked out.

Can you identify this mystery sock?

Do you have children?

ifimay · 08/11/2023 08:10

No children - just the two of us living here. Haven't even had friends over. His family came over a few months ago but haven't set foot in our bedroom or done laundry here.
The sock looks to be an adult 6-8 approximately, if that helps

It looks like a man's sock, but I'd wear those too (I wear anything on my feet under boots!) I live just with my 2 daughters, I've found rogue socks and knickers lots of times, literally no explanation, don't use a launderette, school changing rooms aren't used since covid, literally no explanation. Really really weird. I wouldn't jump to any conclusions over this alone

KingofCats · 08/11/2023 08:11

It looks like a woman’s sock to me. Do you have any other reasons other than the sock to feel suspicious of your husband?

ifimay · 08/11/2023 08:16

I think it's a woman's sock too. Some reason to be suspicious, sadly. Very weird because he has never spent a night alone here - eve only lived here a few months. But he has been alone all day here a couple of times when wfh or when I have been out

Very odd for someone to leave wearing only one sock and not notice

LilyJessie · 08/11/2023 08:18

It does look like a woman's sock 😔
But... have you had any friends or family stay over?
Just hoping it isn't the worst for you xx

willingtolearn · 08/11/2023 08:19

You've only lived there a few months - quite possible that it was from previous owners/tenants

LubaLuca · 08/11/2023 08:19

It looks unworn, like it's been washed and hasn't had a foot it.

Is it possible it's been there the whole time you've lived there?

This? It doesn't look like it was flung off in the throes of a passionate encounter.

The sock is definitely well-worn, it was crumpled under the bed and has pilling. I laid it out flat for the photo.

0% chance that it was here when we moved, we rented the place totally unfurnished and I check under the bed for lost socks semi-regularly. I built the bed in this room when it was totally empty.

Only one - MIL slept over about a month ago, in another room, and didn't do any laundry here

Do you have a cat? We have a thieving cat in our neighbourhood and our local FB page is full of message from its owner trying to reunite people with their belongings. Socks appear to be a favourite

burnoutbabe · 08/11/2023 08:27

It's not the sock I'd wear if I was having a mid day bunk up at my lovers house.

And it looks Xmasy so wrong season too!

Maybe a dog brought it in off someone's washing line.

Someone used a communal washing machine recently? (On holiday maybe)

Giantgold · 08/11/2023 08:27

Ok op

you seem convinced that it is a woman’s worn sock and that somehow relayed to your partner

Giantgold · 08/11/2023 08:27

And a woman who is perfectly happy to walk out with only one sock on!

ifimay · 08/11/2023 08:29

No dogs or cats, we're in a flat and don't leave the windows open so no chance of anyone else's cat getting in.

ifimay · 08/11/2023 08:31

Believe me, I wish I wasn't terrified and suspicious. I can't think where else it could have come from.

OP posts:
Giantgold · 08/11/2023 08:31

one thing for it op

ask your partner

you are not going to get anywhere on this thread

youdo · 08/11/2023 08:31

My house was completely empty when I moved in a few months ago, last week a pair of men's pants and 1 sock appeared from nowhere! Turned out they must have been stuck down the back of a radiator and had worked their way to the bottom so possibly the same with yours.

ifimay · 08/11/2023 08:33

Ha that must have been odd - I don't think it could be that - it's a bit far to the nearest radiator and when I found it, the sock was bunched up like it had been removed from a foot

OP posts:
Inthedeep · 08/11/2023 08:37

To me that looks like a man’s sock, it’s the ankle pattern and thickness, female socks are generally less thick. It also looks washed and not worn since it was last washed. Socks which have been worn but not washed tend to look less perfectly shaped, even when flattened out. Is it possible your partner borrowed a pair of socks from someone etc? Also is there anything else under the bed or is/was it literally just the one random sock? If you keep suitcases/bags etc under there it could easily have fallen out.

ifimay · 08/11/2023 08:47

He wouldn't have borrowed a pair of socks from anyone, and these look to be too small for him anyway. The only explanation I can think of is that it got mixed up in his laundry when he had his clothes laundered at a hotel on a business trip a month ago. But the clothes were fastidiously folded and plastic-wrapped after washing, and I can't see how it would be crumpled under our bed.

OP posts:
ifimay · 08/11/2023 08:48

No suitcases etc kept under the bed, only whatever falls under there!

OP posts:
Inthedeep · 08/11/2023 09:01

Assuming he unpacked his own bag when he came back from the hotel, maybe he put the clothes on the bed whilst unpacking. Saw the random sock, picked it up, thought that’s not mine and left it on the bed to deal with later. Forgets about it, later gets into bed etc and it falls off the bed and ends up on the floor and ends up under the bed.

If it was another woman’s surely she’d realise she are missing a sock whilst getting redressed and under the bed would be the first place she/they would look. If she left it there deliberately for you to find I feel she’d use a more feminine looking sock as that one looks pretty masculine.
