CF Acquaintance turned up today despite refusing invite

We live in a popular tourist destination and after numerous people took advantage of us, we nip it in the bud now. Most seem to follow the same script by contacting us out of the blue and mentioning that it would be so lovely to see us. I now answer in a very friendly manner that it has been years since we last heard from them and it would indeed be lovely to catch up over coffee in a nearby spot when they are in the area. This does tend to put an end to most of those potential CFs, however, one acquaintance pushed back and asked to stay with us at the beginning of September. I told her that this would not be possible, especially as we have a very tight deadline and will be working flat out to finish a commission. DH and I are self-employed craftspeople and sometimes we do work all day and most of the night to finish pieces and the DC stay at their grandparents during that last push. Not heard back from the acquaintance since July even though she clearly read my WhatsApp message.

The doorbell went this evening, I ignored it as DH and I were in the middle of working on our commission but someone kept pushing the bell. Our property is an L-shape so you can see from our workshop who is at the front door. CF acquaintance was standing there with a suitcase! DH is more of a people pleaser and while really cheesed off was about to answer the door till I told him no bloody way! He redeemed himself by immediately agreeing. The bell went a few more times and then got a flurry of WhatsApp messages, which I ignored. She eventually left after half an hour. I am almost bemused by the cheek of it but there is no way I am going to let anyone railroad me into being their free accommodation and greatly inconveniencing us, especially while we literally get up to work all hours and fall into bed. DH is fretting about her coming back but I told that we will just continue to ignore the doorbell. We have a back gate to a dirt track we can stealth like leave the property if she is holding a siege at the front door 😎 There are plenty of hotels and B&Bs in the area, albeit quite dear. Who does that! A rhetorical question but am just shocked by the cheek of just turning up after saying emphatically No!

ManyTears has some GORGEOUS lurcher pups in just FYI for the long dog lovers ❤️

They are so lovely! Both my inlaws and own family are in France though. MIL has reserved a bonded pair, they are due to come beginning of October. She has joined a knitting for sight hounds group... 😆

Those Lurcher pups are gorgeous! DH has just firmly told me there is no more space in the bed for further hounds. I mumbled about there would be if he moved to the spare room... 😎

😂😂😂

No matter if you're busy or not, if you don't want to host people, that's fine. It takes a lot of time and energy and money, as you end up paying for food and putting on special meals, accompanying them and paying entry to places you might not normally go...
Guests should be a lot more aware and prepared to shell out say half the cost of accommodation per night to their hosts. If they can't afford to do that, stay home!

YankeeDad · 01/10/2022 18:49

Just get a sign like this one.

Noooooooo I hope they have a new trebuchet, best bit of a day trip there!

BrightYellowDaffodil · 27/10/2022 11:51

Do you need planning permission for a trebuchet? Asking for, erm, a friend.

LeMoo · 27/10/2022 14:08

If it's far enough from the boundary, I think you're ok.

RandomMess · 27/10/2022 14:21

Have either of you seen how far that thing flings balls of fire 🤣

Grumpusaurus · 27/10/2022 14:38

OMERGARD! DH as usual is being far too sensible and balked at the price. However, he did mention that this kind of money could go towards the huge glass extension I am hoping to eventually add. Seeing me somewhat deflated, DH redeemed himself by looking into building plans for one. FIL offered to price up and check for the timber; he is a big kid like me hahahaha

Think shipping would be a tad pricey too...

Does the £100,000 include the bloke wearing the orange curtains, or is he extra?

2bazookas · 27/10/2022 15:36

I 've had this experience and you get hardened to it. Well done for stonewalling the CF.

I doubt she will come back, but if she does; just text a short cold message "Grump and partner are not at home to visitors , please leave. " Then block her.

I’ve spent 2 days reading this thread and omg I’ve bowled with laughter.

I have to ask, @Grumpusaurus , did you ever hear from CF once she returned home?

CF never contacted us directly again. A teeny part was a little disappointed to have no juicy new update. But overall, we are relieved that there was no major drama, as we are snowed under with new projects.

Mutual friends did regale us with screenshots of her multi media accounts in the following couple of weeks, especially Insta and FB which were full of wistful and cryptic posts about knowing your own worth when people let you down and being a strong independent woman blabladebla with carefully curated, cropped photos. Cue loads of “Are you alright hun” responses and her replying that she will DM them. No doubt to tell them her sorry tale of us meanies leaving her stranded. None of these people are mates of ours, so I really do not care what they might think of us. But I got the impression that she is far from as popular as she thinks and that many of the ‘huns’ probably enjoyed her misery… 😄

DH and I are still seriously considering adding a portcullis. For real. DH is a seriously good welder and we have drawn up quite a few plans. Not an immediate project but something we are planning to construct in the midterm. I am hoping that we can somehow incorporate the waste oil recycling ideas.

I always wondered if you made huge sculptures. I reckon a portcullis counts 😁

Although obvs more on this scale, given your profession -

Could be useful if you get another intruder alert before completing the Mighty Works 😁

Grumpusaurus · 29/01/2023 21:43

Hahahaha love the pic and the link. I want quite a wide and high one, so larger haulage lorries could pass through. The style I would like is more Mediterranean or in fact, Moorish with a tropical courtyard. DH is on board as he loves mechanical challenges and would enjoy building the pulley system. FIL promised to help building it. MIL is amused and intrigued by the hot oil pouring.

Hahahaha, I wasn't referring to my grocery deliveries! Some of our commissions are quite large scale, even if dismantled in pieces. We really do need quite large lorries to be able to get through 😆

KettrickenSmiled · 29/01/2023 22:01

Also - do you check the larger haulage lorries for Trojan Horse style self-invitees?

Come to think of it you guys probably sculpt Trojan Horses ...

Ooooh, we did actually discuss that possibility/potential threat early on in the the threat, only DH was convinced it might be Trojan elephants... 😆
