We live in a popular tourist destination and after numerous people took advantage of us, we nip it in the bud now. Most seem to follow the same script by contacting us out of the blue and mentioning that it would be so lovely to see us. I now answer in a very friendly manner that it has been years since we last heard from them and it would indeed be lovely to catch up over coffee in a nearby spot when they are in the area. This does tend to put an end to most of those potential CFs, however, one acquaintance pushed back and asked to stay with us at the beginning of September. I told her that this would not be possible, especially as we have a very tight deadline and will be working flat out to finish a commission. DH and I are self-employed craftspeople and sometimes we do work all day and most of the night to finish pieces and the DC stay at their grandparents during that last push. Not heard back from the acquaintance since July even though she clearly read my WhatsApp message.

The doorbell went this evening, I ignored it as DH and I were in the middle of working on our commission but someone kept pushing the bell. Our property is an L-shape so you can see from our workshop who is at the front door. CF acquaintance was standing there with a suitcase! DH is more of a people pleaser and while really cheesed off was about to answer the door till I told him no bloody way! He redeemed himself by immediately agreeing. The bell went a few more times and then got a flurry of WhatsApp messages, which I ignored. She eventually left after half an hour. I am almost bemused by the cheek of it but there is no way I am going to let anyone railroad me into being their free accommodation and greatly inconveniencing us, especially while we literally get up to work all hours and fall into bed. DH is fretting about her coming back but I told that we will just continue to ignore the doorbell. We have a back gate to a dirt track we can stealth like leave the property if she is holding a siege at the front door 😎 There are plenty of hotels and B&Bs in the area, albeit quite dear. Who does that! A rhetorical question but am just shocked by the cheek of just turning up after saying emphatically No!

Generally hotels in St Ives don't charge in euros...

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 02/09/2022 13:09

I'm presuming OP & DH don't live in the UK, as the local hotels charge in Euros?!

X-posted with GirlMom.

MN seems very slow at uploading posts right now.

Hahahaha, nice bit of snarky troll hunting! We did put in about 16 hours yesterday. You will be pleased to know that we could watch CF leaving while we were doing other stuff.

Oh, flight, car hire and expensive hotels in a foreign location. I'm picturing the Dalmation coast, mainly because I quite fancy visiting it.

I wouldn't be surprised if she tries to charge you for the unexpected cost of her hotel, she seems the type.

I'm a bit literal and don't take hints and will always question other people's assumptions mostly from curiosity, I am strangely unbothered by cheeky fuckers for very long. What works really well is never explaining or excusing myself but always asking why. "Why did you turn up after we had said no?", "Why did you assume it would be ok without double-checking with us?", "Why is your need to be in the area for X reason anything to do with us?"

Qik · 02/09/2022 13:13

Ah, I missed the Euros bit.

OP and her husband make glass art work for cruise ships and live near Biarritz.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 02/09/2022 13:15

I've just remembered that my DB wanted to buy a house with a hanger once. It was on a lake, very pretty location, and the hanger was for a sea plane. If you're the ones who outbid him then I can definitely see why she wanted to come and stay, it was a glorious location. Grin I think it was closer than an hour and a quarter to Shannon airport though, so probably a different house.

Irridescantshimmmer · 02/09/2022 13:16

Wow............good on you and your husband for standing your ground. I am totally impressed by that.

She was more than cheeky though, and got what she deserved.

Grumpusaurus · 02/09/2022 13:17

Hahahaha, I am getting daft and paranoid! Those calls were from someone involved with the current project, they just emailed with some questions about haulage. Nothing dramatic. Back to work. Thanks to many of you for making us chuckle!

And the CF Oscar goes to… Wow, well done op, you and your DH are defo my heroes. Some people are so entitled it is hard to fathom! Good luck with your current project, hope it’s going well with no more interruptions, lol

SunnyD44 · 02/09/2022 13:30

I know this is your life but I’d love for CF to start her own thread about turning up at no one answering even though the lights were on 😂

JauntyJinty · 02/09/2022 13:43

Another "well done" OP

Watch out for the inevitable passive agressive Facebook posts though! 😂

mummyh2016 · 02/09/2022 13:46

This will be up there with the Mexican house thief once we know what those messages say Grin

The OP and her husband are carving 2 foot high letters from fallen tree trunks.
They have an order from MNHQ for a thousand Ns and a thousand Os. You will soon be able to order your very own big NO from this very website to help you deal with CFs I so want OP and her DH to add these to their repertoire. (Along with the stuffed elephants batch)

ChsmpagneWannaBe · 02/09/2022 14:54

Have to get a weekend update??

SeasonFinale · 02/09/2022 14:59

Please open the door Susan. I know you are in there.

Wink
WhereYouLeftIt · 02/09/2022 15:16

"The hotels close to us are pretty expensive, some of the cheapest rooms on the weekend are about €200 to €250 per night."
Brilliant -not only has she had to go to a hotel, but she's going to be out a fortune! Serves her right.

As SOON as she heard from another friend ( because she had ghosted me 6 years before) that we now lived in Spain she messaged TELLING us that she would be coming over in the summer to stay with us.
I took great pleasure in using telling her no

You could always have welcomed her with open arms, let bygones be bygones, and 'accidentally' given her the wrong address at the opposite end of the country. The address of a hotel, if you're feeling charitable; the address of a huge council rubbish tip facility, if not!

Damn, I wish I'd have thought of that at the time!
Instead I used wording she had used to me years ago, along the lines of moving in different social circles now ............😉

In my head, OP and her DH have an enormous glass workshop. They make huge glass chandeliers like the one in the entrance hall at the V&A. This explains the waiting periods while the glass cools.

CF will be bitching to everyone about how they left her on the doorstep in the cold and rain. Even if it wasn't cold or raining.

Is that a Dale Chihuly chandelier or at least the school? I adore that sort of work.

EL8888 · 02/09/2022 15:33

Good on you! Always good to push back on the CF’s

I want to commission you to make me something..: I’m so nosey. What on Earth are you creating?

I want one as well. I've always wanted one - it's been my life's ambition to own one.

Whatever it is. 😁

See - I'm guessing at niche octopus-porn fetish wear and live on one of the outskirts of the Vatican City

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 02/09/2022 16:11

I had a sudden thought that they make specialist boats, the beautiful wooden type. But, having thought it over, I'm not sure that there is a stage where you need to put in a load of hours all at once, unless they have a big steamer for the planks that they don't want to keep running for more than a couple of days. So now I think they are casting in bronze, which would definitely have a 'critical' stage.
