The Brave Babes Battle Bus - Step Into Our Christmas Thread!

Hello, I'm Mouse Smile

A HUGE welcome to the Bus!

This is the one and only Gerald. Over the years, we've travelled far and wide gathering some truly remarkable Babes along the way, all of whom have been (and remain to be) at different stages of their own personal journey to sobriety or controlled drinking, depending on what it is that they want to achieve.

We have those who drink daily, those who drink occasionally, and also those who have been sober for some time. The one thing that you won't find here, is any judgey knickers! Grin We're ALL here because at one point or another, we've hit our own "rock bottom" and then smashed the shit out of the FUCK IT button! (makes a note to order a new FUCK IT button)

This is without doubt one of the hardest times of the year for many of us, what with Christmas parties, alcohol on tap, supermarkets who have offers galore of various tipples stacked from floor to ceiling, and EVERY advert on TV shows you what an amazingly cool person you can be if you were drinking whatever brand of alcohol they're flogging! Even Christmas puddings and Brandy creams are tempting fate because as soon as you digest even a small amount of alcohol, it makes your body crave more, just like smoking, medication and recreational drugs................

Then there's the gifts that you're given! Champagne Truffles, Liquors, wines, spirits, you name it! So unless you've told people about your planned journey, people assume that buying gifts like that completely acceptable. So, some may feel obliged to consume such gifts and why not? It's Christmas after all. Then we have the New Year festivities..... parties, friends and family over to have drinks because you'll stop drinking after New Years' Day won't you?

It's so damn hard not to drink if that's what you've been doing all year anyway before you even reach this time of year!! How will you cope with your Great Aunt who will check for dust by running finger over ever surface, or Uncle knobhead who will be there in his cream suit, with that suspicious stain on it and his burgundy shirt asking for a Babycham! Also, let's not forget the in-laws/out-laws! We can sometimes put so much pressure on ourselves that we convince ourselves that we DESERVE that glass or seven of wine etc.

At the end of the day, if you want to drink, then you will. I appreciate that doesn't sound supportive but it's certainly true in my case. As I have said before, the most amazing thing about this Bus and those who travel along with it, is the fact that every single one on board has a story, a reason why they're here, and we all need support in one form or another. Yes, alcohol may be the one thing that we ALL have in common but it goes way deeper than that doesn't it? Life, love and laundry for a start! Grin

Even if you're not ready to stop or cut down on your drinking yet, that's fine! You're still welcome to hop aboard the marvellous Gerald. We're a very varied bunch of Babes but we welcome anyone in need of support, even if you're not ready to say everything that you want to yet, or you feel the need to name change, that's fine! Just know that we're here for YOU for as long as you need to be.

I so get the gin thing. As a young child I used to sniff my Dad's gin, enjoying the 'perfume' smell. As a 20 year old I still liked the smell but couldn't stand the bitter taste, so I taught myself to like it by drinking gin with fresh grapefruit juice (the bitterness of the juice masked the bitterness of the gin). Then there was no stopping me Sad

anneboleyn I was a bit Shock that you'd had 2 bottles of gin and could still make sense.... Smile However, it's interesting that those 2 bottles (gifted) might derail your plans.... I think you have 3 options:

  • drink the gin (relatively slowly) over a few weeks and delay any plans for being sober until the next excuse comes along
  • drink the gin as quickly as you can and get on with your sober plans pronto
  • pour the gin down the sink and get on with your sober plans immediately
  • lock the gin in a far away cupboard (just for visitors) and get on with your sober plans immediately.

You may be able to think of other options but for me, option 1 would have been my default position - well I couldn't possible 'waste' a gift.... etc. And option 4 (put it away in the garage) would have been the most difficult. But essentially whether you throw it down the sink, or throw it down your throat, the waste is the same, it's just that one has a bigger impact on your body and psyche.

venusandmars · 18/03/2019 10:55

OK, so the 3 options was actually 4 Blush

AnneBoleynsHead · 18/03/2019 21:03

Thanks Venus wise words as ever. You are a very perceptive lady.
I don't know what to do but tonight I'm on drinking chocolate. Tired from work & running so am off to bed in a minute. Day 1 done.

Swarskid2184 · 18/03/2019 21:38

I am now on day 5 AF. Feeling poorly and pretty weak- but strangely elated to be sober at 9.30pm! Am hoping any physical withdrawal from the alcohol is happening whilst I am suffering from bug- hard to know as feel so rough.

I am not sure that I am ready to go completely AF, but definitely would like to get to at least 3 AF days a week and no more binging to pass out at weekends..::

dementedma · 19/03/2019 20:08

hello all and welcome to newbies. I am totally over the wine witch. Even the thought of wine makes me feel sick. Unfortunately I have replaced her with the Gin Genie. Slightly better in that it is at least diluted with lots of tonic but back to drinking every night. sigh

dementedma · 19/03/2019 20:45

and....today i got my mother of the bride outfit. A year early but i saw it, liked it and could afford it. very pleased and it fits! So now i can't gain any weight!

Swarskid2184 · 19/03/2019 20:52

Feeling a lot better this evening and the gin genie was calling. So far managed to resist, but ate a bag of jelly tots instead!

venusandmars · 19/03/2019 22:26

ma looking forward to seeing your outfit, but what if you loose too much weight??

The good thing about the gin genie is that if you clap your heels together (Wizard of Oz style), and turn around three times, the genie is gone and you can have a cup of tea. Phew!

MintToBee · 21/03/2019 15:52

ma I bet it looks fabulous.
Ive been on the Dukan diet as Ive been having a stress out with my Wedding dress!
I bought one size that fitted like a glove but didn't do up halfway so I sent it back and got the size up then I lost weight so it looks like a sack! I cant get the smaller size as they are out of stock so I panic ordered a different one which I love equally as much as the original one! Two dresses now. My brain cant cope. I have now found a local lady who will alter the original one for £30!!!
If you could follow that then a gold star to you all!

dementedma · 21/03/2019 20:01

Cant wait to see it mint can you pm me the date again? Head like a sieve..

dementedma · 24/03/2019 09:07

Roll call please. picks up clipboard and licks tip of pencil

venusandmars · 24/03/2019 09:57

Here, miss
Venus sits up straight, like the class swot, with her hand in the air, pigtails neatly plaited and uniform ironed
more truthfully, slouches on a chair with feet up, hair a wild mess, in hippy-style mismatched clothes

CaraB76 · 24/03/2019 10:48

Hi all hope you’re having great weekends. My boozing has been limited which is great, but in its absence I’ve realised - shock - I don’t get on with my OH’s friends very well (which is probably why I comfort drank every social gathering). They are a very tight close group of friends for 20+ years, all very chatty and confident and I am 1. Terrible at small talk and banter and 2. A bit of a weirdo.

He thinks I’m cold and aloof and that’s why they don’t chat to me much and I feel like an outsider. I’m finding it harder and harder to be warm and friendly as it’s become a ‘thing’. They were all downing Aperol Spritz but I didn’t. I just need to find a way to reset my confidence / insecurity / grudges as well as my alcohol intake...

MintToBee · 24/03/2019 11:23

I'm here! Lambing madness has started!

dementedma · 24/03/2019 14:15

Ticks Venus and Cara and Mint off the list.

Slingsanderrors · 24/03/2019 16:33

hand up, gymslip and shirt ironed, tie tied.

Have slipped into a routine of not drinking Monday to Thursday inclusive. It’s working, and tbh, by the end of Sunday I’m looking forward to nights off. Ridiculous eh?
