Does every parent really think their kid is the most beautiful?

This was a conversation bought up in the staff room regarding parents and their kids. What's the mumsnet opinion?

Fango - arf!!

"but there aren't really any physically unattractive children IMO, even the "funny looking" ones are cute
there are kids with unnattractive traits IMO (whingey, stroppy, generally miserable) and that shows in their expressions making them less pleasant to look at than the smiley engaging children..
but I think children are generally attractive things to look at even if they're not picture perfect"

Exactly :)

booksandchoc · 04/09/2012 18:39

I think my DD is gorgeous but every parent does, I don't think she is prettier than any other baby but DH colleagues are always telling DH how we have such a gorgeous happy baby I can't help but think actually she must be really gorgeous!

LackingNameChangeInspiration · 04/09/2012 18:40

nobody can be attractive looking to everyone either

I particularly think that red hair is GORGEOUS! particularly on children, and those very very very pale blue eyes. I don't think brown eyes are particularly beautiful because I have em and am bored of looking at my own in the mirror Grin but if DS2 comes out with brown eyes he might change my mind!

LackingNameChangeInspiration · 04/09/2012 18:44

that meant to say noone can be everyone's MOST attractive person

because everyone has different favourite physical traits

SnowWide · 04/09/2012 18:45

My cousin met DD in the flesh after nearly three years and remarked "shes very photogenic, isnt she?"

Talk about back-handed compliments (cack-handed more like) Hmm

But people do constantly remark on her good looks. Personally, I think she goes through phases, like a PP pointed out. Three months after she was born she looked like DPs 60 year old aunt. Couldnt be more relieved when she started filling out a bit and her features began to change.... Grin

MardyBra · 04/09/2012 18:48

Shit. I thought I'd landed up lucky, and managed to produce some spectacularly beautiful DC, despite DH and I being no oil paintings. But going by this thread, I'm just deluded.

Paralympia · 04/09/2012 18:49

ha ha snowWide, my cousin once looked at a photo of me and asked who took it. I said my (then) bf. My cousin stared at me a moment too long and then put photo back down saying 'he's a very good photographer'. Shock

IShallCallYouSquishy · 04/09/2012 19:03

To me my DD is the most beautiful baby girl in the world, even in the pictures of her where she looks hilariously bad! But I'd never expect anyone else to think she is - especially in the double chin evil death stare photos!

I'd never be deluded enough though to think "oh she could be a model let me scream and shout at anyone that thinks otherwise" lets face it, the poor little mite has my nose so there's no chance! Grin

Sevillemarmalade · 04/09/2012 19:10

I get asked a lot if my two DCs (both still under 3) are models - they aren't but they do have that mini Boden catalogue look! I love that they get com

Sevillemarmalade · 04/09/2012 19:12

I get asked a lot if my two DCs (both still under 3) are models - they aren't but they do have that mini Boden catalogue look! I love that they get compliments but I love them because of their delightful personalities and because they are mine - it doesnt matter to me what anyone else thinks of them. I was a cuteish baby but it didn't last long!

Sevillemarmalade · 04/09/2012 19:13

Oops, had a bit of a phone malfunction...

CaseyShraeger · 04/09/2012 19:14

DS is a very good-looking boy. I've often had random strangers comment on his looks, which is slightly offputting as I never know quite what to respond. But I wouldn't say he was the most beautiful.

DD1 is objectively fairly plain (she looks very like me, and I am under no illusions) but she has gorgeous eyes and a lot of personality, and when she smiles it transforms her whole face. She may grow into her looks as she ages, of course.

DD2 is too young to say one way or the other, but she does look startlingly like DS at the same age so she could be something of a looker too. This makes me a little worried about DD1 if she grows up hearing people outside the family banging on about how physically attractive both her siblings are.

In contrast I have seen some other children who were just breathtakingly beautiful. None of mine is in that league.

MarianneM · 04/09/2012 19:15

My DDs ARE the most beautiful children in the world, really.

StealthPolarBear · 04/09/2012 19:16

It's weird. I know objectively.my children can't be the most beautiful on the planet, but I still believe they are, and bizarrely think that everyone must feel that way (about my dc). And then of course polite people who tell me they're cute or have beautiful eyes just reinforce that further :o its what grandparents are for, so you can be surrounded by people who aren't just being polite :o

StealthPolarBear · 04/09/2012 19:18

Although ds managed to look like a wrinkled alien in his bounty photo - why on earth they thought I'd want that hideous picture if the most beautiful baby in the world is beyond me :o

Kayano · 04/09/2012 19:19

Every child in DH family has wonky teeth and so do I

6mo dd has 5 teeth already and I'm constantly like this Hmm are they gappy? Confused I hope not HmmConfusedBear

She also has a slightly lazy eye but the docs say its fine and it is improving

My mother says she is one of the most beautiful babies ever like me
Hmm yeah right lol, maybe if we had hair follicles that worked before the age of two

TwelveLeggedWalk · 04/09/2012 19:22

I have twins and there was a brief phase when Ds was absolutely stunning. I would arrive somewhere and get the usual 'aww, twins' compliments, people would say dd was cute or whatever, but I got a really strong reaction when they saw Ds. It got really embarrassing at a baby group once when the group leader kept gushing about his amazing eyes.
Fortunately he is now usually so covered in muck that the compliments have tailed off, but it was wierd being the parent of an objectively good looking baby for a few weeks at least, being no Grand Master myself!

ChasedByBees · 04/09/2012 19:23

Pudgy and Awomancalledhorse: those are some cute babies!

I think we need all baby photos on profiles so we can objectively judge this. love nosying at baby photos

ouryve · 04/09/2012 19:24

It's our job, as a parent to be our child's greatest advocate.

ChasedByBees · 04/09/2012 19:26

Stealth - so cute although I see what you mean about the Bounty photo! I'm glad I avoided the woman now. Grin

My DD is always smiling which I think adds to her beauty. It's commented on everywhere.

pictish · 04/09/2012 19:26

Ds1 - he is conventionally good looking. He is not the most good looking by far, but he has good bone structure (from my mother) and a nice face. He looks like me, but a far better version.

Ds2 - more of a pugly tbh, he has a huge forehead, although he's getting better looking as he gets older as it all starts to even out a bit. Out of my three kids though, he easily has the most beautiful smile.

Dd - yes, she's lovely. She's not bound for the Next catalogue I don't think, but she is very petite and feminine. She has my mother's stature (my mother was a tiny woman) and mil's pretty face.

I don't think my kids are stand out attractive or anything, but they are attractive.

StealthPolarBear · 04/09/2012 19:27

Chased, I believe ds's wrinkly alien is on mine. If you are overcome by his beauty I'd be happy to order you.a copy of the picture :)

PedanticPanda · 04/09/2012 19:27

Most parents think their dc are the most beautiful to them, but they know they are not the most beautiful ever... that's because my DS is the most beautiful ever! :o

Geordieminx · 04/09/2012 19:28

I think ds is beautiful, but wasn't quite sure whether all parents thought this IYKWIM.

However he is just back from a 3 day shoot for Ralph Lauren so they must think he is beautiful also.

He's only 5, it would be nice to think he'll still be as beautiful in 10 years time, although I'll still love him when if he turns into a lanky spotty oaf Wink
