Why men like stockings and suspenders?

MsBakingCakes · 11/03/2012 23:39

Had a chat with DP last night and he cannot explain why men like women in stockings and suspenders. I do not know the answer so I thought that here in mumsnet someone would come and helps us discover why.

He is not sure either but thinks it is sexy but he does not know why.

Anyone out there to help us please?

Unfortunately I’ve got a big fetish and avid interest in stockings. It’s not just the sensual side for me it’s the technical/history and everything else. I might seem sad to some reading this but it’s actually like a hobby.

I think that is obvious hence you posting on a zombie thread in the middle of the night.

ElectraBlue · 11/12/2021 13:35

I must be a freak because I like wearing them (I am a woman dating a man) with really nice underwear & heels/boots. I really love the 40s/50s/vintage pin-up look and I am a big fan of Dita Von Teese. I think it helps me feel more confident, almost like I am becoming someone else. For me it is just part of creating an atmosphere and it nice if a guy appreciate the same type of aesthetics. Although I don't always wear them, they do give me a thrill. Nothing to do with the patriarchy and men's expectations in my case!!

Mans pov here I love to see women in S+S. It’s a visual treat / turn on for me It’s the range of colours and the white skin left not covered by the stockings

@HotDAMNlifeisgood

Because in our society, they are shorthand for femininity - i.e. compliance with patriarchal norms of women as sex objects for men.

HTH.

Are you a man?

Otherwise how would you know?

Linguini · 11/12/2021 21:28

2012!

Linguini · 11/12/2021 21:29

I could have gotten away with wearing them in 2012 but I'm definitely too old now.

Catullus5 · 12/12/2021 00:14

I thought only men wore them now...

Wow really?, I don't quite understand why men have to be tagged the way they are because they like how a woman looks when they dress in certain things. And I for one don't stereo type women as sex objects. Stockings just look good and it's the allure of where they lead to. I also like a woman in jeans and a white t-shirt, My wife wears stockings for bedtime fun, but it's because she wants to, not because I tell her to. She knows I like them, it's not all the time, just when she wants to. I cook certain foods for the wife because she likes them, I don't cook her food she hates because she shouldn't choose what is on the plate, and dare to tell me she likes. Come on get real, I understand there are men(and women) who look at things in a controlling way, and men aren't just animals, yes some are horrible oxygen theives, but please don't tar us all with the same brush. Some of us like things simply because we do, and don't force those likes and desires on people.

I once read that it’s a biological reaction of the male sexual response of knowing what’s above / between them.
No idea if there’s any truth in that at all.

Thatsthebottomline · 14/03/2024 13:33

I've no idea. When I was 12 my Dad made me watch Chers video for If I Coukd Turn Back time and it has put me off for life

Bobbotgegrinch · 14/03/2024 17:00

Given that you asked for male opinions @MsBakingCakes , I'll take a bash at it. Its not just stockings for me, tights have the same effect as well. And reasons are thusly.

a. Legs look good in them. It's that simple.
b. They're slightly see through, but not properly see through. This is sexy no matter the item of clothing
c. It likely means we're going out somewhere. Going out is fun, and a good night out often leads to sex (I've never really been out with someone who wore them around the house.)
d. They disappear up under a skirt. It's a place we're quite interested in being, so it makes a link in the male brain.

Annoyingly, despite really liking both stockings and tights, I really hate the feel of them, so actually can't wait for DP to take them off once we actually get to sex!

Not for me.

Have you just replied to a comment that was written more than 12 years ago and is that a Mumsnet record?!

Chiming in as a bloke, albeit an Aussie one... They do nothing for me. I've never found stockings, suspenders or high heels in any way attractive. Boots with a bit of a chunky heel or wedge sandals to give a bit of extra height are fine, but the standard high heels are a turnoff. Mind you I'm not a big fan of make-up either, so maybe I just prefer a more casual look?

Are you single lol 😉.
Refreshing to hear

I’m not bothered.

That is a very grim outlook on the fact the women has the power in this given situation. Some women seem to never be happy even if they are appreciated they are then seen as an object, yet the man is lusting over something he possibly can't have.

Toadinthehole · 16/10/2024 06:45

BRRRRAAAAAINNNS!!! BRRRRAAAAAINNNS STOCKINGS AND BBBBRRRRRAAAAAAAAIIIINS!!!!!!!!!!!

The13thFairy · 16/10/2024 13:57

It signifies that she's eager to please.

outdooryone · 16/10/2024 14:31

Nope. They do nothing for me really. (M, 50).

I do wonder if it is a cultural / upbringing thing? As a teen of the late 80's and early 90's, it was a real 'thing' back then, so maybe just something titivating many men grew up with?

A brain and an attitude are far more attractive, personally nudity just works better for me, but maybe I am more attracted to a natural appearance?

It’s a male instinct that we are born with, along with many other species that have inherited instincts. The same as women’s instincts.

My DH has a real liking for them which he blames on seeing Vicki Michelle in them in Allo Allo as a young boy! I used to occasionally put them on when we were younger for special occasions but feel far too frumpy nowadays which is a cause of friction as he would still like me to.
