General internet dating support and chit chat thread

Relationships seems the most appropriate place for this I think? Happy to ask for it to be moved if it's maybe better in _chat or something.

Anyway!

Chit chat your dating/internet dating claptrap here!

Also your hints and tips please for dating in the shark pit on the internet

I'll start.

I'm 31, single and rather fed up of it now. Have a few internet dating profiles, am trying to improve my social life and get out more, even looking out for possible additional temp jobs just to be.... 'out there' a bit more.

Even had a go at cosmic ordering which has been cropping up in dating related threads recently. Now I'm a very scientific and cynical kind of person but when it comes to my (currently appalling) love life I will try anything to give it a bit of a boost. Whether that be focusing the mind on the task in hand or strange unknown forces I care not.

Ah yes, the generic email

I had one guy go mental at me because I didn't respond to his 'rose' email...jesus wept.

I've been on 5 dates, 2 ended with it continuing for several weeks/months, but the others were a little off. I need to sharpen up my bullshit radar, but I think that takes a few errors first.

MadameDefarge · 22/09/2011 15:31

I hate all those bloody sporty/mountain climbing photos...cos what I really want to do is climb the matterhorn, right. And the one , from GSM! who offered to show me a picture of his cock. mmm. sexy.

HairyGrotter · 22/09/2011 15:34

Or the ones where they have loads of mates in the photo? I don't get it? I thought it had to be of the one person? OR OR OR the ones where they have blatantly 'cropped' their ex out of the photo because it's a nice one of them. Brilliant

hellsbells76 · 22/09/2011 15:35

can we link to / c&p some of these tragic ones or is it Frowned On? there's one that keeps coming up on my matches who is making himself sound like such a loser I think he must have done it for a bet...

stayforthekids1 · 22/09/2011 15:35

Uploaded pictures of the top to my profile. Would be worn with black very tight skinny jeans and either black high heels or black heeled boots (biker type)

hellsbells76 · 22/09/2011 15:36

Oh god yes, the ex cropped out or - even better - the ex with her face badly whited out in MS Paint so she looks like he's spilt tippex on the picture...

MadameDefarge · 22/09/2011 15:36

won't you be a bit chilly?

MadameDefarge · 22/09/2011 15:38

Or the photos of them taken with the webcam which shows their minging bedroom behind them....

or the moody "studio" shots in black and white. Sorry mate, no one could love you as much as you love yourself.

hellsbells76 · 22/09/2011 15:40

Or the ones of them holding their phone in front of their face taken in the bathroom mirror. Because nothing says 'I have absolutely no friends and therefore not ONE picture of me that isn't a self portrait' quite like that...

Extra points if you can see the toilet in the background, especially if they haven't flushed...

stayforthekids1 · 22/09/2011 15:41

I have a black short sleeved cardigan I can wear if I do madameD, but I generally dont feel the cold, I am a hardened scot Grin besides if I get cold, he can warm me up ;)

HairyGrotter · 22/09/2011 15:50

Liking the top! Go for it.

Yes, the black and white studio shots with the obligatory 'diamond ring or earring'...or the white vest. Or the 'sat out on the dock in my shades and a pint of larger' shot

Makes me want to pull my teeth out!

stayforthekids1 · 22/09/2011 15:51

cheers HG, it doesnt look so great in the photos, but its really nice on and a good fit. I think I will you know. I did offer to wear the police costume from my birthday but he said I wouldnt be wearing it for long if I did and its awfully cold to go out naked Grin so top, jeans and i think boots, it is :)

HairyGrotter · 22/09/2011 15:55

I realise this makes me a bad person, but THIS is an email I just got from a guy I've been emailing on OKCupid for all of 4 hours:

"I bet your very popular on here, I still can't believe how amazing you seem to be and why would anyone leave you to bring up a child on your own, I would value each day you was in my life.
X"

I hate this, I really do :o(. He's an artist, I dislike artists, I told him that but it would appear that he thinks that's funny.

stayforthekids1 · 22/09/2011 15:57

Were. WERE!!! Not was. I hate bad grammar.

hellsbells76 · 22/09/2011 16:01

And you're not your! Bad grammar is a blockable offence for me

stayforthekids1 · 22/09/2011 16:03

It's the same for me. Most of the time I am rather pedantic. If someone messages me on a dating site and it's all text speak or bad grammar, I never reply. High standards much?! Good job the sassenach is very articulate!

HairyGrotter · 22/09/2011 16:04

I'm going to have to block him, I can't be dealing with that guff on a website or in real life tbh. Sends me running for the nearest bar.

Will keep trawling the scraps.

adamschic · 22/09/2011 16:05

He, he it's nice to know that it's not only men from my neck of the woods that commit photo crime on facebook. We should avoid replying to any guy who is guilty as described on here.

Now don't get me started on the actual wording of the profiles. The txt spk, the spelling mistakes, the 'hunning', cosy nights in, geniune guy, been badly hurt, tactile, the list is endless. Arghhhhhh! Not sure if I can bear to appear on POF again.

Good luck with the dates this weekend, look forward to hearing how they go.

adamschic · 22/09/2011 16:07

Meant POF not facebook!

HairyGrotter · 22/09/2011 16:09

I think spelling and grammar are very very important as a first impression. If you're not sure of how something is spelt, fucking google it.

Ah, I remember why I took myself of these damned sites before.

Just this minute landed in my inbox:

"I am sure you get a great many emails and can't possibly reply to everyone. If my profile sparks an interest do say hello. Finally won't be upset if you don't reply. I will understand. All the best x"

UGH. I hate that faux-humble shit. Delete delete..

seedlessgrape · 22/09/2011 16:13

The countless times I got sent a message saying "your lovely"

My lovely what???!!!

lubeybooby · 22/09/2011 16:13

I sent a message to a guy who looked normal. I just got this in reply and recoiled in TOTAL horror

Shiney, top opinions please!

Hells, I dont get those messages. They dont make me inclined to reply in the slightest. The only ones I ever reply to are the ones that at least have some questions that are more interesting that whats your favorite food. I think I am very fussy!
