Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think people frequently miss their own weddings because of a morning quickie while in a plaster cast, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks for title suggestions. I basically took @OverArmour's excellent suggestion and managed to shoehorn in snivelling simpleton, gloriously coined by @Eastie77Returns to refer to Lee in the first instance.

@WitcheryDivine suggested Recharging, Red Kites and The Man They Call Ron, is Ambridge becoming an earthly paradise or a hell on earth? which seems as good a place as any to kick off our discussions! Ron = Rob, a fortuitous typo on a previous thread. It does feel a bit as if we're marking time before he turns up again. Odd to do what could be a high profile storyline over the summer holidays when a lot of people will be away, but depending on your point of view, maybe that's a blessing!

Whither George? Is he shaping up to be Andrew Tate mark 2?

Everybody looking forward to Ferret Fun at the Fête? Me neither.

Over to you!

I wonder if all the soppy buttercreamy Fallon and Harrison stuff will lead to another unplanned pregnancy.

I don't fancy the cake if that's what they've been up to while making it! Nice to hear them laughing together though.

DeanElderberry · 21/07/2023 07:39

I gather I'm going to have to start listening again? (it's only been a month or so - I stopped when they brought Rob back)

Ambridge · 21/07/2023 08:06

Yes, agreed, George didn’t let on about the warnings, but Neil told Susan and Emma about them, iirc, and Emma went into protective mother-bear mode instead of doing the sensible thing and having a word with Will to put him in the picture. So he had to be told by Neil as well.

No wonder poor old Neil's had enough of being harangued by all of them. And of course Hannah's been 'called out' by Emma…what are the chances of an apology? .yes, I know….silly me…

Brefugee · 21/07/2023 08:09

TopOfTheCliff · 20/07/2023 19:58

Where can George go now? He has alienated everybody who loved him. I suppose Susan and Neil might take him in but I would quite like him to storm off and join the Army. A spell of boundaried military discipline would do him a world of good.

as i have said elsewhere: the Army won't want George. He wouldn't get past selection because he can't see that you sometimes have to hold your real thoughts/feelings back to get to the main prize.

And if he did? He'd probably encounter a sergeant like me who would efficiently, and in good order, show him the error of his ways.

stilldumdedumming · 21/07/2023 08:42

I agree it will be Neil who gives George the best guidance.
I have had 2 teenagers. And to be honest one of mine would have easily said all those things (and more). No wonder I thought Emma was doing ok!!

stilldumdedumming · 21/07/2023 09:00

Although slut is way too far!

FallonsNewCoat · 21/07/2023 09:03

There’s going to be some mix-up over the cake/cakes, isn’t there? Surely Tom didn’t mean he was expecting two birthday cakes. Or do parents of twins often do that?

echt · 21/07/2023 09:26

The cake can be divided, as it was the the "Ghosts" fourth series, episode "Gone Gone" when the Coopers belatedly realised they had little girls, not elderly ladies celebrating a birthday.

The square cake was pushed open to make a V and filled with Smarties/M&Ms.

Sorted.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 21/07/2023 09:57

Where can George go now?

Clarrie and Eddie's? They haven't been involved in this debacle thus far so George can spin his lies to them, particularly Clarrie who can be a bit of a soft touch.

Eddie's never backwards in coming forwards with regards perceived Oppression of the Grundys either, so he'll take George's side. And he's turned a blind eye to George's wheeler-dealer vaping antics before - much as he did tell him to stop in the end I think he's secretly proud of that George is a chip off the Del Boy block.

Agapornis · 21/07/2023 09:58

LOVED tonight. Was not expecting to hear the word slut that early in the evening, did the announcer give a warning? I wish the podcast edition would include announcer bits, I rarely get to listen live and miss their humour.

MathiasBroucek · 21/07/2023 09:59

So, what will tonight's cliffhanger be?

  1. George runs away. He steals a car but is stopped by a WPC who warns him that there's a big sink hole in the road ahead and he should take another route. He ignores her and the last thing we hear is his cry of dismay as he encounters the enormous orifice...
  2. George kidnaps his beloved Fallon. Tom becomes enraged because the cakes are with Fallon. Henwy texts Ron who rescues Fallon...
  3. George confronts Hannah as she is about to feed the pigs. He stabs her and runs, leaving her surrounded by hungry porkers...
Fleetress · 21/07/2023 10:07

@BrightYellowDaffodil doesn’t George already live in the Grange Farm house with Eddie and Clarrie? At least half the time. I recall he asked Emma and Ed a few months ago if he could move. I think he retains his room in Little Grange.

Is Will still living at Grange Farm? I may have missed any change in his domestic circumstances.

Twyford · 21/07/2023 10:10

The downside of last night's episode was panicky Fallon. Surely she used to be much more level-headed?

her business is suffering and her husband wants to go part time...

Brefugee · 21/07/2023 10:56

to be fair her husband did say he'd withdraw his request for pt working and put it in later.

I think/hope all this is leading to Fallon telling the BF idiots to stuff their café and to go to the EV station. Where Chelsea will be working at the salon.

George is clever and as Neil said, he does work well under direction. he will be fine at BF as long as he doesn't cross Tony. He is unlikely to have to work for Pat or Helen, is he?

I have twin grandsons. They always had one cake and relit the candles to sing again. The eldest by 5 minutes goes first.

TheGander · 21/07/2023 11:03

@PuppyMcPupFace i thought that too- Fallon is going to be challenged in her kid free views as she discovered she’s pregnant in a few weeks.

But the upside of that was Harrison bringing her round and them laughing about it in the end.

I agree, and they’ll be blindsided because they can’t hold two thoughts in their heads at the same time and the Helen/Ron drama is absorbing their every moment.

Understandable up to a point but they really are behaving like fools.

Especially Tom.

But plus ça change

CaptainMyCaptain · 21/07/2023 11:10

I hope Fallon moves on to the EV station too.

Minimammoth · 21/07/2023 11:10

Geeworerge, is going to end up homeless, and be taken in by Martin. To become his body slave.

RegimentalSturgeon · 21/07/2023 11:46

There is no watershed on radio. Hardly shocking language, and fair comment on George’s part anyway; not enough has ever been made of how disgusting Emma was - not even a small skimmity ride! If the outburst at his parents and uncle is all the promised “George goes too far” amounts to, I shall feel short-changed. I was hoping for something that would get him into the real, official shit. Why else are we getting bucketful of dim plod Burns at the moment? (A creepy stalker himself, of course)

harriethoyle · 21/07/2023 11:54

Last night's episode gave me proper goosebumps - so well done. I was open mouthed on the motorway!! Really interested to see where they go from here - was that the sound of scales falling from poor deluded Emmur's eyes?? We can but hope!

TherapistInATabard · 21/07/2023 11:59

For those not on the spoilers thread, the BBC’s teaser for last night was ‘20 Jul George goes too far, with shocking consequences’. For a few weeks we’ve been discussing this and thinking it would be a physical attack on Hannah, or her house/car/whatever. The reality was so much better!

JanglyBeads · 21/07/2023 12:04

Emma slapped him round the face.
That won't be forgotten easily, by either side.
