Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that , or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Well, things have taken a turn for the better in the last few days! The SWs have re-discovered their form and the actors and directors have risen to the challenge. I won't say much more than that for fear of jinxing things. Over to you!

(Thanks to @JanglyBeads for the thread title idea!)

Emma had always fancied Ed but started going out with Wiwyum.
Will knew that he wanted to be a gamekeeper, and that's what he did.
He was lodging in a flat at the Dower House, owned by Guy and Caroline Pemberton. Emma would cycle there, leaving her bike propped against the wall.
Emma had a bad car accident, Ed was driving Will's car IIRC.

Brilliantly put Totters. That's absolutely it in a nutshell.
The real difference of course is that Harrison has a proper job, I think Emma is going to want Ed to get one and honestly I can’t see why he won’t unfortunately I don't think this is leading to Ed getting a proper job, it's more likely going to see him being dragged into one of Eddie's dodgy schemes or worse.

That’s happened so many times before though. I wonder if, now we have George as replacement Naughty Grundy, Ed might do some kind of retraining that would at least give him steady work.

I remember the younger Ed too, he was quite troubled and vulnerable (and around the same age as Ben) but he always had amazing chemistry with Emma. Emma knew then I think that Will’s aspirations/employability were more in line with what she wanted from life. But she was in love with (the much more useless but also less of a twat) Ed.

GoldenCupidon · 08/12/2022 14:19

I agree @TherapistInATabard - Harrison is supposedly gorgeous but whether it’s his wholesome Blue Peterish topics of conversation or what, I find him absolutely repellent.

I’d forgotten about Fallon and Ed as a couple til I read that link - they were very well suited at the time but I think his drug taking got in the way?

Ed's obsession with his brother's ex-wife got in the way. He called Fallon "Em" during a minor row on what was supposed to be a romantic weekend away together, and Fallon realised that although he said (and she believe) he had not been seeing Emma while Fallon was on tour with her band, he wished that he had been.

SnowlayRoundabout · 08/12/2022 14:44

Didn't Ed blow a perfectly good job with Adam and Brine by virtue of his involvement with Timotei?

When he was talking about stealing the wood, I wanted Emma to ask him what was wrong with just asking Kirsty nicely if, say, she'd sell it at a discount or let him have some in part payment for his work. It's got to make more sense than yet another stupid scam.

I'm glad the SWs are acknowledging the effects of rising prices and heating bills, but it would be ever so good if someone could have a conversation with Emma and/or Tracey about benefits and tax credits.

Yes!! I actually remember listening to this episode - what year?

Yes!! I actually remember listening to this episode - what year?

4th July, 2008.
Lowfield:
"Ed continues to be reluctant to be alone with Fallon in bed, even to the extent of going out for breakfast before she wakes up and trying to avoid going for a walk with her on their own. It comes to a head during the day and Fallon demands to know what is going on. Ed won't even look at her. And then in the middle of row he calls her Em. He tries to blame it all on her being away with the band but in the end he admits that while nothing has happened with Emma, he can't forget her. Fallon and Ed love each other, but they still need to split up."

SnowlayRoundabout,

The trouble is that the wood Ed cut yesterday is of no use at all to the Grundys at the moment; it won't be fit to burn or sell until it has been dried. So asking Kirsty for it wouldn't solve any immediate problem for them. And if it is cut-back branches, it isn't logs anyway and not a lot of use in a wood-burning stove.

TwoBlondes · 08/12/2022 17:40

I hope Emma wasn't so unsettled by the evening that she gives Ed the go ahead to steal the wood after all.

Far more likely that George would get involved.

That’s leonard gone down in my estimation then

ILoveShula · 08/12/2022 19:15

Have I ever mentioned that I don't like Pip?

MereDintofPandiculation · 08/12/2022 19:31

(the much more useless but also less of a twat) Ed. That just about sums it up.

Harrison is supposedly gorgeous but whether it’s his wholesome Blue Peterish topics of conversation or what, I find him absolutely repellent. I cannot forget his “wooing” of Fallon which pretty well strayed over into stalking.

it isn't logs anyway and not a lot of use in a wood-burning stove. It burns and gives heat (once dried) but you need to re-stoke more often. You couldn’t sell it, because people expect logs, but it’s perfectly functional if you’re around to tend to it.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/12/2022 19:54

For quite a while Harrison was known as "Harassment Burns" as a result of the way he refused to take "no" for an answer from Fallon; some even went so far as to call him "PC Perve".

ColonelOfTruth · 08/12/2022 20:26

Have we got a new thread? 🙂

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/12/2022 20:28

No, we're only on 938 posts. New thread soon, though!

I agree with the positive sentiments about Joy, she oozes warmth. Do we know what she does for a living? I get the impression she’s comfortably off… Have we ever heard her mention a job?

ColonelOfTruth · 08/12/2022 21:19

Urgh Harrison, he’s so bloody boring!

I had always assumed she was retired.

I was furious with him. The most important thing was for Ben to be able to trust him, now Ben knows he can't.

Also there has been no mention of the difference between suicidal ideation and suicidal intention.

I was more furious with Pip. Given that Leonard had told her (which wasn't great, but understandable that he wanted to do something about it), she could have approached that conversation with Ben so much more tactfully and gradually so that he would have eventually told her himself and she wouldn't have to reveal that she already knew. But no, she got bored with the gently gently soft approach within about a minute and decided to go straight in with the 'so I hear you're suicidal' tack instead. It's her fault if Ben feels that Leonard can't be trusted.

JanglyBeads · 08/12/2022 23:38

And I was quite worried by her jaunty "Then we'll all be determined to help you get better!" ending line.

That’s funny because I hear her as younger than the standard retirement age, maybe 50.

I picture her as late 50s at least, she did just describe Kirsty as “decades younger” and she must be at least 40?

TeenDivided · 09/12/2022 07:10

She's got a grown up daughter (and grandchildren?).
I place her as retired, a youthful early-mid 60s.

Interesting. I see her as 60s, maybe someone who didn't expect to find love again. I still don't know why she chose to retire where she didn't know anyone.

ColonelOfTruth · 09/12/2022 08:06

Good points! I can’t wait to find out the backstory but I’m worried Mick is going to be a bad ‘un. Please no…
