Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/11/2022 13:41

Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that , or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Well, things have taken a turn for the better in the last few days! The SWs have re-discovered their form and the actors and directors have risen to the challenge. I won't say much more than that for fear of jinxing things. Over to you!

(Thanks to @JanglyBeads for the thread title idea!)

I agree @Octothorpe , I think Justin grasped the nature of the relationship straight away. His reaction did send a shiver down my spine, he’s so loathsome.

Can I just briefly comment on this stupid choir rivalry nonsense (I notice the rest of you haven’t bothered, so dull is it). Why must there always be some sort of feud? 😤

JanglyBeads · 26/11/2022 08:52

Ruairi may not need the money, but I'm sure this is all a (partly subconscious) reaction to Alice tearing any shred of security he felt from his relationship with Jenny, the "mum" who replaced his DM who died when he was so young.

I wonder whether childhood trauma of various kinds is often the root cause of this kind of "work" in those not on the breadline.

Because if you are fully functioning emotionally, you don't sell your body.

IMHO anyway.

GoldenCupidon · 26/11/2022 09:07

Two thoughts on the Ruairi stuairi

  1. as a PP said the lightest possible way of doing a prostitution storyline which probably makes the SW feel “edgy”

  2. you know on MN where posters say “if he was a woman you wouldn’t be saying that!” or vice versa - this storyline is IMO an exemplification of that. But it doesn’t make sense this way round. If Ruairi was a young woman who’d lost her dad and was being alienated by her siblings then yeah it would sort of make sense if she fell into escorting because older powerful men do still go around with beautiful very young women on their arm (sometimes) and laddy culture would congratulate the men on having her around. But society does not congratulate older women for parading about with teenage boys and in fact this would likely harm Juliane’s reputation. So the gender flip I feel they’ve done here makes no ducking sense. (Autocorrect left in for the sensitive)

Octothorpe · 26/11/2022 09:32

Ruairi stuairi 😂

noodlezoodle · 26/11/2022 09:32

I agree the duelling choirs story is absolute nonsense, but if it replaces the Christmas show I will be more than happy!

JanglyBeads · 26/11/2022 09:32

Good points @GoldenCupidon

JanglyBeads · 26/11/2022 09:34

And also, @noodlezoodle and @Octothorpe lol, I missed that wonderful new phraseology from@GoldenCupidon !

Tulipomania · 26/11/2022 09:35

I was watching the football last night. Did anything interesting happen? Friday is usually the cliffhanger? Not sensing anything in this thread.

JanglyBeads · 26/11/2022 09:39

"Cliffhanger" is whether Jolene or Fallon's choir will win the Ambridge Christmas ratings, and / or be less tedious than Lynda's usual efforts, and /or lead to less arguments/ romances/ heart warming moments.....

So no. HTH!

GoldenCupidon · 26/11/2022 09:41

Grin Thank you

oh yes I’d momentarily forgotten the duelling choirs! Load of tosh. Organising a choir is a lot of work, they’re both busy people, seems absolute nonsense.

was nice to see the dopeys starting to work together again though

TherapistInATabard · 26/11/2022 10:07

Yes removing the malign influence of Jill is clearly having an impact on David. It’s like that scene in The Two Towers when Gandalf banishes Wormtongue and Theodin’s eyes visibly clear. Apologies for the niche reference but I’m hoping enough of you have seen the Lord of the Rings trilogy 😂

SaltyCrisp · 26/11/2022 10:31

Jolene sounded more like a pirate than ever last night.

I have an irrational dislike of Fallon because she's depriving Harrison of the chance to be a dad.

I thought the scenes between Ruth and David were lovely. She has an attractive voice when she's not swooping her syllables.

The only thing Vince has any business blaming Ben for is the treatment of Beth, and even then if he thinks Ben is so utterly contemptible I would have thought that Ben chucking her out would be something he was glad about rather than seeking vengeance for.

What he announced in The Bull, ostensibly to Leonard but actually to everyone in there, was, "Has he told you what kind of a scumbag he really is? Shall I tell you what he's really been up to? The baby of the family, the student nurse? Has he told you that he seduced the young Horrobin girl, heh? Got her pregnant and packed her off for an abortion? Then threw Beth out onto the street?"

One out of three ain't bad, I suppose.

Its a mighty big one though isn't it?

Beth accepted they were split up at the time, tried to work with it and let Ben and Chelsea make their decision, and move past it. In return Ben literally chucks her out of the house without warning. I'd be spitting if any child of mine was treated that way.

Vince was utterly in the wrong to broadcast Chelsea's business all around the pub. However being able to pull out of the business deal with David because the Dopeys didn't read a contract is down to them. Vince must be acutely aware of how David looks down at the common Brummie oick who aspires to connect with the first family of Ambridge and that the same family have broken his daughter's hearts. It may not be rational but its understandable.

Most of David's beefs with Vince boil down to "Vince did better than me in a business deal". Brian does the same all the time without such censure. Justin also with occasional censure as he is posh, but not really an Archer.
Elizabeth tried to point that out to David more than once. The Archer attitude to Vince is very much like the Archer attitude to the young Jack Woolly (as described to me by my Mother!).

I dare say once again the Dopeys will fail to check the details and then find that their 2 acre paddock which has suddenly doubled in value to a cash buyer is actually being bought by Vince or Justin to build a tower block for common folk or similar and make a mint.

Fink · 25/11/2022 17:27

I might have missed it, but do we know how the Ruairi - Julianne thing started? I wonder whether he was on the look out for a bit of extra cash and found JW through a school contact or something, or whether she was scouting around for a potential victim at his freshers' fair ... I had always assumed that most student escorts signed up with an agency, but they seem to deal with one another directly

There is no shortage of sites promoting "escort" work to young women students (a Tory MP made a lot of money in this line). Some universities put an implicit seal of approval on this.

It doesn't surprise me if there are some for young male students as well.

There needs to be an inn-choir-y

Place your bets now on the Two Choirs story culminating in a special Christmas guest appearance by Gareth Malone

Oh dear god 😩. Is that a prediction from the🔮?

Maybe they could rope Toyah Wilcox in again?

Gonners · 26/11/2022 15:01

Hello - new user here. Can anyone chip in, or do I need to read the 141 previous threads and, if so, will there be a test?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/11/2022 15:04

Hello, @Gonners. Yes, you need to read all the threads, several times, and then there will be a live examination over Zoom, with a 98% pass rate required.

Apologies, got carried away there. Welcome! No need to know anything. How long have you been listening to The Archers?

OP posts:
Gonners · 26/11/2022 16:01

On and off since about the mid-60s, Gasp0de, with some fairly long breaks when I was out of range of the BBC (or Too Cool for such things). I haven't always been paying attention, though.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/11/2022 16:06

Neither have I, to be honest! I grew up with The Archers on in the background quite often, but didn't start listening properly until I was a student in the early 80s.

JanglyBeads · 26/11/2022 17:47

Welcome gonners - that's quite a pedigree!
