❓ Archers thread #126: It’s a mystery why we’re all still listening.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 31/03/2021 19:59

Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you’d love to be on the Parish Council, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/4197199--The-Archers-spoilers-thread-6-Cant-wait-for-7-02pm-Join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @LillianGish and @Taswama for thread title ideas, but I felt most in sympathy with @R4's suggestion. Is it me, or is the programme in the doldrums at the moment?

Haven't heard the 31/3 episode yet. Perhaps it's a gem. Hmm

Having failed to cause him to leave her, she then decided to leave.

Face it, Chris: your marriage is over. It's not actually your fault, but you will feel that it is for the rest of your life so you might as well make at least one protest about her behaviour; so far she has had your support pretty-much unquestioning, but you do have the right to have a limit to your patience.

MissBarbary · 22/04/2021 20:08

It's going to cause extraordinary ructions isn't it? The Aldridges will blame Chris and the Carters will blame Alice. Everyone will blame Harrison for keeping it secret and not doing anything.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/04/2021 20:14

And Peggy will blame Jack, and probably Tony.

lottiegarbanzo · 22/04/2021 20:14

I remember Wayne seeming feckless but harmless too. Maybe he was worse when younger. (Or maybe the SWs just made it all up!).

MayIDestroyYou · 22/04/2021 20:37

@MissBarbary

Who in the village has a spare room for her? Brian and JD don't.
Lilian, perhaps? Though there's probably a lot of drink at the Dower House.

Doubt she'd be welcome at Peggy's.

Adam and Ian? Surely a damp ditch would be less irritating.

There's always a yurt, though even they are threatening to up sticks.

Oh. Eventually she might end up seeking sanctuary with the soon to be sanctified ...

Given the total invention about Jazzer's Berrow interview that they treated us to tonight, I'd say the latter is probable.
ILoveShula · 22/04/2021 21:15

She used to have some posh Pony Club friends with names like Seb
He was Basty not Seb.

JanFebAnyMonth · 22/04/2021 21:23

It would be initially amusing but then quite thought provoking for her to be offered room at Aunt Lil’s but then realise how much temptation there was there.

How on earth will she cope without Martha? 😢 She’ll Go on a very big bender won’t she?

ILoveShula · 22/04/2021 21:23

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/04/2021 21:29

Oh god, she will won't she?

Remember when she extended the hand of Christian hospitality to deeply depressed Darren and then relentlessly bullied the poor sap until he decamped to the Grundy caravan?

MayIDestroyYou · 22/04/2021 21:31

Remember?

Hmm

Will we ever forget?

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/04/2021 21:42

Perhaps Malice will strangle her with her ecru cardigan

I’m sure I remember Jazzer having an interview at Berrow. Wasn’t that for Hannah’s job?

TheThermalStair · 22/04/2021 23:34

Don’t JD and Brian have a spare room? Surely Phoebe had some kind of lair there? I can’t picture them moving out of the farm and making their little Oxford girl homeless.

Typical bloody Chris (and typical man) saying this about cheating. Talk about missing the point.

Mumblechum0 · 22/04/2021 23:34

Yes I have a vague memory of Jazzer rocking up at the interview swaggeringly expecting to be offered the job on the spot and being knocked back. He was scunnert about it

TheThermalStair · 22/04/2021 23:35

I remember him having an interview and not doing any prep. Here we go: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/51WgWgSBpQLzxf7mb47C7sH/6-things-you-could-but-shouldnt-do-at-a-job-interview

JD and Brian don't. Kate was in their cottage for some reason I can't recall (maybe just after they sold the house?) but was kicked out when Rory came home from school.

Phoebe lives next door with Roy.

Yes he did have an interview. I think Neil was quite keen but Justin wasn't.

Hannah has gone awol along with Pat and Stefan (? Is that his name? Kate's vet)

MayIDestroyYou · 22/04/2021 23:45

Jakob.

MissBarbary · 23/04/2021 00:47

Thank you. Has Johnny gone AWOL too?

Speaking of characters who have disappeared they could have dedded Christine during the pandemic.

lottiegarbanzo · 23/04/2021 07:56

And the spectral Kathy.

He did and, as I remember it he went in really cocky and spouting rubbish.
Atichen · 23/04/2021 08:36

Didn't he do that to negotiate better wadges from Tom, or is my memory muddling things up?

CeciledeVolanges · 23/04/2021 08:45

I think of Kathy as one of those characters in older video games who just stand there for as long as it takes to interact with them, and nobody has done that for several years!

I think it was Darrell, rather than Darren, but I remember that storyline! Unfortunately it was so badly done that it sounded like he was just lazy and malingering the whole time. Don't we normally refer to him as HWMNBN to avoid summoning him back?

I haven't listened to yesterday's yet - bracing myself somewhat as it sounds like it's going to be a difficult listen. I just wanted to write something to the effect that alcohol dependence/substance abuse is really now understood as a mental illness, or a symptom of one, and so it is Alice's behaviour that is despicable in this instance whether or not she's a poor excuse for a human being. I've known a lot of people, and have an extensive history myself, of mental health issues, and (for example) people tend to view anorexia as a devastating illness for the sufferer and to be able to separate "eating disorder behaviour" from the "real person" even if the eating disorder endures to and maybe causes their death. I'm not negating the horrific impact of alcoholism or any other mental health problem on those around the sufferer, but it still is an illness, and about the worst thing you can possibly feel as an alcoholic is the shame that this is all you are - because then, as Alice pretty much said last week, why not drink yourself to death? There's no hope for you, and the evil of alcohol is actually you being evil, which I don't believe anyone is.

Sorry if this comes off as sanctimonious, it's not intended to be.

MollyButton · 23/04/2021 08:53

There is a big difference between "feckless but harmless" in the guy down the pub and the person who is your Dad. My DD are not speaking to their Dad (my Ex), and he wasn't that bad, not even feckless really - but years of not feeling they mattered to him and his selfishness and disinterest in them has led to them having had enough (and I have kept out of it and if anything encouraged them to contact him etc.).
Having a Dad for whom the latest "great new idea" and wacky baccy seemed more important than you and your Mum. And years of constantly being let down - would create real hurt in a child. It took a lot for Fallon to be in anyway reconciled to Wayne - far longer than Jolene.
