Discuss The Archers here, the long-running thread series started by PseudoBadger. Maybe my puns will tempt her back to take the reigns?

I think Sleeping Beauty references can wait until the next thread which will probably cover much of December.

Lurkers de-lurk! New to The Archers? you're welcome here; the friendly crowd will answer your questions.

It's Peter I feel sorry for.

'AIBU to be a bit disappointed about this? I'm an only child. My mum is in her 80s. She ran a business which she sold for a good price when she retired. She recently sold her house and is now living with my aunt. She has always told me that she will be leaving everything to me, although of course she might have to dip into her capital for nursing home fees. Now it turns out she recently fell for a scam investment scheme and has lost everything. I work full-time and have a good salary. I have my own home and have been able to make some pension provision. But I had been hoping to use Mum's money, if there was any, to help me through my own retirement. I'm single and childless so likely to have to pay for care in years to come.

I just don't understand why she didn't ask anyone for advice about putting a high six figure sum into this scheme. I travel a lot but I'm always at the end of a phone, or she could have emailed. My aunt always has an excellent head for business. My cousin's husband lives very near my mum and is also very savvy when it comes to money. In fact, there are lots of family nearby she could have talked to. She's a bit stubborn, though, and she seems to have fallen for the sales talk.'

Of course, anybody posting that on MN would be ripped apart. The accepted wisdom here seems to be that it is outrageous for a child to expect to inherit anything from a parent, if there is anything left after paying for care in the final years of life. But I have to say I'd be on Peter's side in similar circumstances. That sick feeling that the money built up from decades of hard graft and saving has just been handed on a plate to a bunch of amoral criminals and will never be seen again, and it could so easily have been avoided with a bit of common sense.

As may be obvious, this story has pressed one of my buttons. Most of the rest of what's happening on TA at the moment leaves me cold. I'm not listening with close attention, I'm afraid.

I think I could take Ruth being more miserable than usual over pip being around at all

Ruth is just an irritating background noise. It is easy to blank her out, not so with Pip and that awful up and down inflection.

She ran a business which she sold for a good price when she retired.

That is a good point - what happened to the money from the stables? I thought Woodbine was funded by the insurance from the bungalow she shared with George.

Asmuch- do you feel feminism has benefitted you in any way?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 25/11/2017 17:04

Wrong thread Bertrand !

BertrandRussell · 25/11/2017 17:04

Oops-wrong thread!

But Gasp Peter doesn't give a flying fxxx about his mother. I'd understand if he visited regularly, even if it was to keep his inheritance warm Grin

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/11/2017 19:15

@ppeatfruit, I know he's rarely mentioned, but I prefer to think that's the SWs' fault for forgetting he exists. I expect he visits quite regularly, or Auntie Cardboard pops up to London to see him on his rare returns to the capital. It's just nobody thinks to talk about it near the microphones dotted all round the village. Grin

RolfNotRudolf · 25/11/2017 19:48

Alfie's farm is in the Falklands right? Or a remote Pacific island? And he and Pip will live there happily ever after - please.
NZ might be further but it's a lot easier to get to than either the Falklands or a remote island Grin

Eastpoint · 25/11/2017 19:55

Doesn’t Peter live in Germany? Is he something musical? Can’t summon the energy to look him up.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/11/2017 20:40

Don't know where he lives but he is an orchestra manager and (conveniently) tours the globe more or less full-time.

Tierra del Fuego is my choice for Pip's future abode. The sooner the better.

LillianGish · 25/11/2017 20:46

I know he's rarely mentioned, but I prefer to think that's the SWs' fault for forgetting he exists. This. Let’s face it, they have enough trouble keeping up with people who actually live on Ambridge - Ben, Kathy and Jamie to name but three. In fact does Jamie even live in Ambridge anymore? Abi’s also dropped off the radar though presumably she must visit Roy. Peter is Christine’s adopted son and works as an administrator for a symphony orchestra.

BertrandRussell · 25/11/2017 21:32

Peter is very musical. I think he also has a close friend called Dorothy. Or is that Dan......?

Gruach · 25/11/2017 22:53

Peter will probably be home soon ...

I missed Friday. Am I to understand that Christine has been stripped of everything?

ppeatfruit · 26/11/2017 08:52

Yes Gruach £300.000. She still has her pension.

ppeatfruit · 26/11/2017 08:53

You were right Anti Chris couldn't bear to tell her family the whole truth.

birdsdestiny · 26/11/2017 09:14

She is quite trusting isn't she. Days after Peggy had broken her trust and told everyone and the milkman about the initial loss, she decides Peggy would be the best person to keep the secret of the real amount. Sure that will work out well.

ppeatfruit · 26/11/2017 09:27

Yeah birds maybe even a leetle bit naive!

Gruach · 26/11/2017 09:42
Shock

Seriously?

(Momentarily feeling as bad as if it had happened to a close friend.) Oh dear.

R4 · 26/11/2017 10:15

Momentarily feeling as bad as if it had happened to a close friend.

Really? To me, Cardboard is probably the least interesting person on TA; she has zero personality. I couldn't care less about her.
I'm imagining Susan gleefully saying "have you heard the latest about Christine?" to which the village replies "Come again. Who?"

BertrandRussell · 26/11/2017 11:10

Justin is so in this up to his neck. There is no way he wouldn't have done his-what's it called - due diligence? on Melling Equestrian.

C8H10N4O2 · 26/11/2017 11:24

There is no way he wouldn't have done his-what's it called - due diligence? on Melling Equestrian

I would agree but does he actually have money in Melling Equestrian? I though Melling was just part of his/Miranda's social circle.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 26/11/2017 11:32

There is no way he wouldn't have done his-what's it called - due diligence? on Melling Equestrian

But Justin didn't invest in it so why would he bother checking it out. Justin sabatoged the the promotional day by telling his friends and acquaintances not to attend. He didn't need to do any diligence for that.

Latif invested in it but that decision had nothing to do with Justin (can someone remind me who exactly Latif is)

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 26/11/2017 11:36

To me, Cardboard is probably the least interesting person on TA

What in competition with Ruth, Pip and Anisha? I don't find any of them interesting at all. The current story with Christine is sad and far more believable than any of the rubbish storylines featuring these 3.

R4 · 26/11/2017 12:09

Ruth , Pip and Anisha (and Kathy) may be annoying but at least I get a reaction to them. Cardboard is boring. She is usually a passive device - for Clive's malice or Peggy's jibes about scones, for instance - but I can't think of a recent storyline where she has actively done anything, apart from this monumentally stupid decision about her life savings.

Heck, she is such a non-entity that she gets second billing to the antics of a malevolent cat.Grin
