DadDadDad · 31/10/2017 12:47

Discuss The Archers here, the long-running thread series started by PseudoBadger. Maybe my puns will tempt her back to take the reigns?

I think Sleeping Beauty references can wait until the next thread which will probably cover much of December.

Lurkers de-lurk! New to The Archers? you're welcome here; the friendly crowd will answer your questions.

I'm team Josh when it comes to his family, the rest (except Ben) are awful. And Ben could be awful as well, but will we ever know? Perhaps we'll never hear from him. There'll be a SL about the police turning up one day and Ben being expedited to the US to face charges of hacking into the gov's computer system (havoc was wrought when Trump's standing order for Coco Pops was changed to an order for organic, fair trade, sugar free muesli).

Ceto · 08/11/2017 17:56

I assume Matt is representing to his mates that the past-it horse is fantastic? And he could have told them that the price was much higher than it actually was in consequence?

Vango · 08/11/2017 18:30

I too wondered if his suitcase was full of the price difference Ceto.

Gruach · 08/11/2017 19:09

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh ......

Sad
EBearhug · 08/11/2017 19:10

Don't, Philip! You can do better!

Gruach · 08/11/2017 19:12

"My husband doesn't understand me ..."?

TheAntiBoop · 08/11/2017 19:40

Phillip and Shula?

R4 · 08/11/2017 19:49

What sort of chef offers quiche followed by tarte tatin?

newtlover · 08/11/2017 20:26

have you all checked out the comments btl of NBS's article? there are people there who suspect Shula, too!

Cromwell1536 · 08/11/2017 20:39

Not surprised that Carina dumped them. They're really not presenting themselves as remotely good parents.

I can't believe either that Adam would lose his rag like that. He's 50 and gay people have become used (sadly) to hearing and deflecting the absurd arguments that people who don't think gay people 'should be allowed' to be parents put forward. It would have been so much better writing if Adam had been contemptuous/dismissive/coolly logical.

Alleycat1 · 08/11/2017 21:46

R4 No chef worth his salt!

ThatsNotMyToddler · 08/11/2017 21:58

It was a ridiculous lunch menu all round. Who wants quiche and six types of salad in November? This is one situation where the famous Ambridge soup would have been perfect. Two types of soup if you’re worried about flavours. You can always freeze the other. Ian could have made some delicious bread to go with it and it would have been much more suitable.

They were clearly signposted to not get on, what with Karina asking ‘why would you bother?’ cooking from scratch, whereas presumably it’s important to Ian to do so. That’s before you take into account the weird blistering violent/criminal conversation she interrupted and the barely functional relationship they presented over lunch.

ThatsNotMyToddler · 08/11/2017 22:00

Not sure what I meant there but it wasn’t blistering. Im sure you got the gist

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 08/11/2017 22:02

His reaction to Matt's remarks show Matt was correct - he would not be a good parent. Obviously not for the reason Matt gave but his inability to deal with it.

I've lost track of what Matt's motive was. I don't think Matt cares one way or another about gay parents and it was to provoke the reaction caught on the CCTV but what was the ulterior motive?

Timetogetup0630 · 08/11/2017 22:19

RolfnotRudolf my suspicion is that Matt planned to buy one horse and try to pass it off as the other, more expensive one.
But this could not be done given that racehorses have passports, extensive paperwork, age can be determined by checking their teeth etc.
The whole storyline is unbelievable anyway. Anyone buying bloodstock from the UK would use a reputable, well established specialist dealer, not some random petty crook/ property developer.
In fact I don't even think there is a racing industry in Costa Rica.
(Horsey but no experience of bloodstock dealing.)

R4

Yes sorry I misunderstood - you were not that vague!

Pip had a decision about the cows: short term gain or play the long game (health of the herd)? She discussed it with Ed and Jill, and chose long-term

Yes although again in reinforces the attitude of Pip and the Dopeys that Josh has no place on the farm. Josh has grown up with that herd, helped with it even if he doesn't have a degree from Felpersham College. It never occurs to Pip or the Dopeys to discuss anything with Josh other than to demand he makes time to do grunt work on the farm.

Josh had a decision about TractorsRUs: short term gain or play the long game (look after family / keep promises)? He chose short term gain and left D&R abandoned at the airport. It's not the first time his ethics have been shaky - remember that business with Neil and the eggs.

Well if I had returned from a short haul flight after a holiday and one of my 20somethings had called to say they had a work opportunity I'd have told them to take it and called a cab (or got the train to Hollerton Junction). What I wouldn't have done is whined endlessly about how rubbish they were for not putting a personal taxi service before a work chance.

The eggs - yes he did flake but how old was he? 14/15? Compared to some of Pip's cock ups over the years which have all been forgiven with the fatted calf I think Josh is totally the 'spare'.

OuaisMaisBon · 09/11/2017 06:23

Re: quiche and salad - my reaction to Ian's lunch was "What, two types of quiche (pastry crust), followed by a tarte tatin (pastry crust)? No proper chef would do that, there's a massive overload of carbs in there, it's not balanced!"
Blush Showing where my true priorities are.

R4 · 09/11/2017 08:11

And sourdough rolls!

Minimammoth · 09/11/2017 08:20

There’s nothing like a two tart lunch for some folks though Wink

ppeatfruit · 09/11/2017 09:54

Thebelleof of course all of the details you mentioned are true BUT you forget that Lil is a MAN's woman; she hates being alone even for a moment. She craves excitement, sex, booze, racing etc.

She has never fully grown up IMO!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/11/2017 13:15

Very late signing in to this thread! Nancy's back.

Contented sigh. Her column is much better than TA merits at the moment.

ppeatfruit · 09/11/2017 13:28

Very true Quais But Ian probably was tailoring the meal to the recipient. He must've reckoned that Carina was the type who'd buy a quiche so she wouldn't be bothered if pudding\dessert was also pastry based . Either that or he'd defrosted too much pastry and wanted to use it up.

Soup would've been better !

DadDadDad · 09/11/2017 13:42

Thanks, Gasp0de, that link didn't work for me, but I found it, so this might work for others: www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2017/nov/07/nancy-banks-smith-on-the-archers-who-tried-to-kill-matt

No not for me either! Thanks dadx3 (and Gasp for trying of course [grin ] )

DadDadDad · 09/11/2017 13:52

Out of curiosity, I googled Nancy Banks-Smith and she's 88 years old! I hope I'm that sharp when I'm nearly 90.
