The Archers: The Crook, the Vet, His Wife & Her Lodger - discussion #80

In full acknowledgement of PseudoBadger's great achievement in providing the previous 79 threads over the past 4 years (and credit to R4 for this thread's title)...

Discuss TA (The Archers). New posters encouraged - it's not (too) cliquey here and plenty of regulars are happy to answer questions. Archers

One rule: no spoilers (ie no mentioning future plot teasers from Radio Times listings etc) - there's a separate thread for that.

So, is Phoebe pregnant? will Anisha dob in (dobbin - geddit?) Alistair?

PS I don't presume to take on PB's role permanently - hopefully the job of starting new threads will rotate among regulars until she returns

How about (with apologies to Teen) "Home truths at Home Farm - will Kate have a happy birthday? Or will everyone suffer the fall-out? Discuss the Archers here"

Trying to think of something cleverer but I've been up since 4.30 this morning with a snotty, teething child so my brain is pretty much mush. Very happy to give way to wittier suggestions

selsigfach · 29/09/2017 07:45

The honeymoon chat was so depressing. Even if he wasn't keen, Justin should have said "what an adventure, how romantic - whatever you want, darling."

Imbroglio · 29/09/2017 08:14

Yes and Justin rushed her through the gallery as well. This isn't going to work.

AuldHeathen · 29/09/2017 16:37

Justin's behaviour is grimmer by the day. I thought we'd all made it clear we'd had enough after Rob. I hope Lilian will be okay and the sl doesn't get too silly. Hmm

Ceto · 29/09/2017 17:27

I really disliked David's passive aggressive "So I'll repair this by myself then, shall I" to Josh when he had to go off to the sale. FFS, he must have managed these things for years when the children were younger, why has he suddenly become so helpless? Or maybe he could get Pip to help, it's not like a bruised face would prevent it. But of course the Favoured One must be left alone.

Bekabeech · 29/09/2017 18:28

I liked Toby, he was very nice to Pip and judged it just right. And might just get her to get over the truama.

Bekabeech · 29/09/2017 18:35

Oh by the way “bruised face” is not what I picture. My DD was at the stables when a girl got kicked by a horse. It resulted in her eye hanging out and the air ambulance being called.
Pip obviously wasn’t so badly injured, but I still don’t think it was trivial. And having a smashed up face can make anyone want to hide rather than cope with peoples reactions.

Ceto · 29/09/2017 18:54

But she can still hide on her parents' farm.

Bekabeech · 29/09/2017 19:02

Well a normal farm, but inAmbridge? Living on Brookfield land are the Archers+ Bert and the Fairbrethern. And most of the village can turn up at any moment. But hopefully Toby has got her past that.

Gruach · 29/09/2017 19:10

Oh. Only one? No ...? (Don't want to spoil for slightly later listeners ...)

Oh dear.

Lilian and Justin? Ha, ha, ha!!!!!!

Timetogetup0630 · 29/09/2017 19:18

Another accurate MN prediction with re the birthday surprise !

TheAntiBoop · 29/09/2017 19:20

Spill!! This isn't the spoilers thread!

And I've been doing bedtime....

selsigfach · 29/09/2017 19:26

Only one reluctant visitor from South Africa. You reap what you sow - a lesson someone could have said in their critique.

EsmesBees · 29/09/2017 19:39

I was surprised that Brian picked out Kate's maternal skills as one of her good points. Not only is she physically distant from her kids, she's emotionally distant too.

DadDadDad · 29/09/2017 20:38

But then again, great gift idea from Kate - that's all my children's Christmas presents sorted! Grin

OP posts:
Fink · 29/09/2017 21:53

I'm not surprised Brian thinks Kate's parenting is acceptable (although I don't know that it's realistic to think he'd consider it an active strong point) since his own is equally distant. E.g. his almost complete non-interest in Ruairi having sent him away to board as young as possible.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 29/09/2017 22:39

Justin and Lil storyline is creepy and irritating and ridiculous.

Gruach · 29/09/2017 22:52

But Fink ... It's made very clear that Brian dotes on Ruairi. Also as I remember it was Jenny who first suggested boarding for him.

EBearhug · 29/09/2017 23:49

So Noli is 16 and Sipho is 10. And Phoebe is 19.

TheAntiBoop · 30/09/2017 08:39

Yes I was surprised by that too. I don't recall her being born when Phoebe was so young. In my mind I remember there being concern that Phoebe would feel replaced?

But then again, Abi must be nearing ng 10 now as well

WhereTheFuckIsWonderWoman · 30/09/2017 10:46

Is Noli's accent meant to be South African? I'm not sufficiently familiar with her story to know where she's been all this time. It didn't sound like any of the South Africans I know. But then she didn't speak in particularly long sentences so might have been missing something Confused

Imbroglio · 30/09/2017 10:56

Alice off to get drunk again....

TheAntiBoop · 30/09/2017 11:25

I believe she grew up In Durban?

SA accents can be quite variable depending on region as well as social background. The one we are used to on tv is quite a hard one. Probably the same way that all English accents on us tv are cut glass!!

I'm assuming the actress is British but I can't seem to find her name on the archers website - they just have her photo.

Agree she didn't speak enough to make a full judgement but I'm glad they haven't gone for an ott accent like they did with Lexie!!

AuldHeathen · 30/09/2017 13:03

I actually expected Kate's comment on Alice's shortcomings to be 'You drink too much'. I wonder if they are moving towards a sl of alcoholism. I would like to think some listeners still think of alcoholism as mostly a middle-aged man problem. Has there been a 'proper' alcoholic on TA since Jack Archer?

LillianGish · 30/09/2017 13:42

Justin's relationship with Lillian is already starting to morph into the relationship he had with Miranda. Lots business trips and a sudden lack of shared interests. It's exactly what I predicted, but I'm surprised it is happening with such speed - she hasn't even got a ring on her finger yet. He also appears set on swindling her out of her business as well as taking the Dower House off her if the heavy-handed signposting is anything to go by. I think it's a reasonable storyline (marrying the mistress and creating a vacancy), but I would have preferred it to progress at a more subtle pace. Where has Matt gone? Will he be back to rescue her? His and Lillian's was a "warts and all" kind of love - the problem with Justin is his warts are still not entirely apparent and I'm not sure they are the kind of warts Lillian could love. I keep thinking back to all the fun Matt and Lillian had viewing those apartments before their fond farewell at Grey Gables. Justin and Lillian had no fun together yesterday and returned home to discuss the paperwork for Justin's takeover of her business.
