The Archers: The Crook, the Vet, His Wife & Her Lodger - discussion #80

In full acknowledgement of PseudoBadger's great achievement in providing the previous 79 threads over the past 4 years (and credit to R4 for this thread's title)...

Discuss TA (The Archers). New posters encouraged - it's not (too) cliquey here and plenty of regulars are happy to answer questions. Archers

One rule: no spoilers (ie no mentioning future plot teasers from Radio Times listings etc) - there's a separate thread for that.

So, is Phoebe pregnant? will Anisha dob in (dobbin - geddit?) Alistair?

PS I don't presume to take on PB's role permanently - hopefully the job of starting new threads will rotate among regulars until she returns

Maybe a baby is easier to write into a script. It won't have to talk, just gurgle like Jack whereas an older child would either have to be mute or a robot.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 27/09/2017 13:27

I thought the same, but I suspect that Helen and Ian would forge ahead nevertheless

Oh I can see that. They could even set up house together.I'm sure the Ambridge spare room fairy could find a lovely 4 or 5 bedroom cottage for them.

TeenTimesTwo · 27/09/2017 13:31

Title suggestion:
Menage a trois? Or will Helen be left holding the baby again?

RolfNotRudolf · 27/09/2017 13:44

I like that Teen Grin

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 27/09/2017 13:52

Me too.

Gruach · 27/09/2017 19:16

BOOP ...

Very excellent episode.

JigglyTuff · 27/09/2017 19:17

That was irritatingly click bait but glad it's been blown out of the water

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/09/2017 20:08

It was good, but I have a terrible fear that Kate might offer herself now. Running through all the other women of childbearing age we know in Ambridge, most surely wouldn't even consider it (although if this were the US and money could change hands, I could see poor Emma thinking it would be a good way to bolster the family finances).

TheAntiBoop · 27/09/2017 20:11

Kate would be quite good - she's not really keen on being a mother so wouldn't interfere much

selsigfach · 27/09/2017 20:14

I don't think Emma would - hard-up as she is, she wouldn't be able to give away a baby. Kate, on the other hand, has abandoned 3 children, she'd be perfect.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/09/2017 20:20

In that sense, yes, plus she's Adam's half-sister, so there's a genetic link - but Kate is dreadful! Suppose that turned out to be genetic? Grin

ppeatfruit · 28/09/2017 12:05

The Anti I love the world that Kate lives in when she was saying to Ian what a 'natural' mother she is Grin Yes naturally neglectful Grin

DadDadDad · 28/09/2017 14:40

Teen - it looks like your "ménage a trois" suggested thread title has been strangled at birth. (sorry). So, field is still open for ideas...

Is it wrong to be a bit pleased that I can go back to loathing Helen. She is monumentally self absorbed.

TeenTimesTwo · 28/09/2017 15:12

Rats. Smile

Not as good: We know who the Dads are, but who is the Mum?

I'm sure we could do something with Home Truths at Home Farm too.

ppeatfruit · 28/09/2017 15:24

But Helen made the right decision ref. the surrogacy birds She was finally thinking about Henry. She did actually want to help Ian and Adam too. it was a kind impulsive thought which she thought about and concluded that it wasn't a realistic one.

AuldHeathen · 28/09/2017 15:28

I was surprised they didn't have the uncertainty over Helen's decision go on for a few weeks. Maybe they realised the listeners wouldn't be happy. Smile

AuldHeathen · 28/09/2017 15:31

I like Teen's new suggestion. First was good too - but can see why it wouldn't do now.

ppeatfruit · 28/09/2017 15:34

Yes I have a feeling they might read this thread Auld They should.

MrsArthurShappey · 28/09/2017 15:40

I just want to smack Ed. Emma's working three jobs so he can dick about with his farmer fantasy. Coming from non-landowning farming stock I can sympathise with him up to a point but he just doesn't get it does he? I really thought he was going to say no to tom. He and his pride can just knob off!

birdsdestiny · 28/09/2017 16:00

Yes she made the right decision but she should never have offered in the first place. It is possible to think things through without opening your mouth.

TheAntiBoop · 28/09/2017 16:24

Agree Arthur. I guess he has inherited the Grundy chip

R4 · 28/09/2017 16:42

Remember when Emma said she would only work at the chicken factory as a short-term thing, to pay for George's (April) birthday present. IIRC, it was only supposed to be til June.

Helen is a piece of work. She raised the idea of the surrogacy with Ian who said "are you sure?" so she said "let me think about it". It took her all of 24 hours to realise, like everyone else did, that it was a crazy idea. Couldn't she think first then (not)speak, especially considering she knew the history with Madds. So selfish, although I bet she thinks she was being altruistic.

campion · 28/09/2017 16:46

Adam doesn't actually want a child so what is the point of this storyline? He'd rather have root canal work by the sound of it.

He's keen to get on the right side of Ian,obviously, but it's a bit high stakes.
I hope his flakiness is picked up during any counselling they may (or probably may not) have.

Wake up,Ian!

ppeatfruit · 28/09/2017 16:51

I would bet that, if it came to it, Ian would prefer a baby\child to his relationship with Adam.
