The Archers - It's not about the money, money, money, think about Jill's honey, honey, honey, Justin wants to farm by satnav, forget about the prize tag.

Will The Dopeys have buggered off by the end of this thread?
Will Tom finally reach home, after weeks of trekking through the tundra?

Maybe Rob has already been sacked and just pretends to go to work at the mega dairy...

BringYourOwnSnowman · 05/12/2014 09:56

Old Tom was too busy realising he didn't know who he was to not go along with rob. Much like Helen really - when people are at a weak point they are easier to target.

Guess Tom found himself in Canada so we can all shut up about him being such a different person because are we all so think thy we don't realise two weeks on your own in the middle of nowhere does that?

Old Tom was all about trying to please his parents by being new John.

New Tom is all about trying to please his parents by being new tony.

[sidles in quietly, lowers voice]

I've just posted some Radio Times spoilers on the dedicated spoilers thread. Those of us who like them must all work very hard at forgetting what we know when we come back to this thread.

[sidles back out again]

BringYourOwnSnowman · 05/12/2014 10:00

Regarding rob - he isn't that clever. He should have rented a house in another place that he could have shacked up with his wife in and then somewhere with Helen in ambridge. Then he could have merrily led go double life keeping two women on their toes.

R4 · 05/12/2014 10:25

What is the attraction in spoilers mimsy? Doesn't it ruin the in-the-moment-ness of the drama? I know that when Norman Painting died, I spent a few months repeatedly thinking "is this when Phil dies?" It disturbed the flow of the story.
I do understand the value of hindsight - sometimes when you hear a repeat you pick up on nuances that you missed first time round. But why the need to rush ahead of the story? What's wrong with the real-time doling out of events?

I bet you're the sort of person who goes straight to the last page of a book.Grin

But thanks for keeping it all on a separate thread.Flowers

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 05/12/2014 10:31

It's very hard on my poor brain Mimsy. I can never remember what it's safe to say where!

Re Rob. I've been hoping for a while that he's already secretly out of a job. At the moment I'm puzzled about the point of all the hunting business. Would he really chicken out because of the protesters? Or did he drop the hunt purely because he thought he could do more damage at Bridge Farm (not realising Tom would be there.)

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 05/12/2014 10:33

Last page of a book - definitely not!

I wouldn't like outright spoilers, but I do like the little teasers from the Radio Times. I also like to look at the cast list in advance when it's available. It gives me something to speculate about (yes, I do lead a very quiet life). At bottom, though, I'm just a very nosy person!

No problem about keeping it on a separate thread. I know from the old BBC TA messageboard that people who hate spoilers really, really hate them! Smile

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 05/12/2014 10:33

(Cross posted. I don't mind spoilers. They only add to my fevered speculation!)

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 05/12/2014 10:34

I'd agree he might be out of a job if he didn't work for Helen's family. He couldn't possibly keep it quiet in the circumstances. Pity!

unitarian · 05/12/2014 10:42

I'm on the fence regarding spoilers. They're so cryptic for a start.
'X has important news' could be major or it could be as trivial as Underwoods having a sale.

I would like the New Tom voice if it wasn't so like other male characters' voices. Same with Pip.
Two characters with distinctive but irritating voices have been replaced by actors with less abrasive voices but they now sound bland. It makes for very confused listening, especially when they have to be rather clumsily named by other characters so that we know who the hell they are.

Is Helen going to be in the play or not? Or is the imported actor from Floss (Rhind-Tutt?) going to sweep her off her rather unsteady feet?

Or is Kirsty suddenly going to pop up to play the role?

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 05/12/2014 10:48

I have two sad stories of spoilers. (Not Archers.)

There was the time I randomly picked up The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (which I hadn't read) in a bookshop wanting the post-story info that used to be included in paperbacks to encourage you to buy more. Only there want any post-story info. Just the end of the story.

And then there was the time I borrowed (possibly an old style) DVD from a friend. I had to rewind it from the end on screen. It was The Usual Suspects.

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 05/12/2014 13:28

Zero, I've seen The Usual Suspects but my memory for most non-Archers things is abysmal so fortunately I hadn't even remembered that there was a plot twist, never mind what it was!

What a shame about TMORA! My absolute favourite Agatha Christie and the one that got me hooked on the Golden Age whodunnit. I like to know how long a book is when I start reading it (I don't read on a Kindle) so I very cautiously leaf to the back for the last page number I can see. I usually do that through half-closed eyes with my hands blocking out as much text as possible so I don't spoil the ending.

This sits oddly with liking teasers, but there we are.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 05/12/2014 15:11

Cor, Julian Rhind-Tutt. Probably would.

Loved the last two episodes, especially the two old ladies trying to give each other a pep talk. More like that please.

Why is no-one worrying about Helen?

Icimoi · 05/12/2014 16:45

It was very typical of Knob that, when bemoaning last week's hunt, he had no problem with seeing a fox torn apart but massive problems with being filmed by dastardly Sabs intent on their evil practices of enforcing the law. Not unlike quite a few hunters I've come across.

Icimoi · 05/12/2014 16:51

I suspect the Knob story may be blowing up to some sort of a crisis. We've got:

  • Helen not eating - someone's got to notice soon;
  • Helen standing up to him about the hunt business. Can't have that.
  • Tom putting him firmly in his place re Bridge Farm.
  • Charlie has always been antsy about him taking time off to see Helen etc, and won't like all the time he's taken recently.
  • Piggoi threatening to change her will again.
  • Maybe a new leading man working with Helen if she goes back to Blythe Spirit.
  • Maybe Kirsty coming back, and she's always hated him.
  • Maybe Tony returning, finding out what Knob has been up to with the farm and siding completely with Tom.
  • Maybe when Pat is able to give both the farm and Helen her attention, she also will revert to hating Knob.
  • And, most of all, Jess lurking around in the background with a baby with Knob's face.

It shouldn't really happen this quickly, but I would have thought even someone as Machiavellian as Knob would find it difficult to talk his way round that lot and achieve what he wants.

ppeatfruit · 05/12/2014 16:58

Just heard Feed Back and once again M. O'connor is too busy to reply to critics who mentioned the new actors such as NT and NP. I do reckon we'll get used to them and they both seem better actors to me anyway (ducks flames) Grin

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 05/12/2014 17:24

Exactly, icimoi, I keep humming "Billie Jean" re: Rob's paternity.

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 05/12/2014 17:35

Oh - was he (not) on ppeat?

Doesn't matter how good an actor NT turns out to be - the very apparent nepotism and very samey voice don't give one much confidence in the TA management.

TopazRocks · 05/12/2014 18:10

The last few episodes have been better written (maybe they've been taking hints from us!) IMO, and there are several stories going on that could lead to something 'exciting'. I just wish the new voices weren't so samey. I can't see Knob being sacked without somebody knowing and discussing it, Adam for example.

I agree Kirsty should not take either Tom back. he is a love rat of the first order. I do hope Patrick thumps him though. I hope what happens is that Tom's nose gets out of joint (maybe quite literally?!)when K turns him down and gets close to Patrick.

I won't look at the spoilers as I can't trust my brain at moment - very tired and easily confused!! But is there a time limit on the new ones, Mimsy? So I can look later. I did look at them last week but that was okay as most have now happened.

I hope Pat and/or Kirsty see Helen's weight loss soon. I suspect it's not something Tom will notice till it's very obvious. Maybe Tony will turn a corner soon and Pat will be less stressed and able to spend time with H. Even when he stops being acutely ill, Tony will be in hospital for ages yet - esp. if he does have a permanent and significant spinal cord injury. Where do RL people go for rehab after spinal injury in B'ham area? There's a place for military casualties in Solihull but what about civilians?

Kirsty getting in touch after Tony's accident doesn't surprise me, and doesn't mean she's forgiven anyone. Tony was probably the most appealing of all of them anyway Hmm and T's accident was very shocking event.

TopazRocks · 05/12/2014 18:13

BTW, DH made the point Peggy doesn't need to see a lawyer to change her will. Is that right? In Scotland I know you can do a codicil and it stands. My aunt did a scribble on a piece of paper to show her desired changes when my dad/her brother died - when she died 6 months later the change was upheld.

PseudoBadger · 05/12/2014 18:34

I'm not convinced she's coming back. She liked Tony and I would contact the family in the same situation.

OP posts:
TopazRocks · 05/12/2014 18:47

No, I'm not convinced either. Maybe they are toying with us. Yet gain. But I liked Kirsty and I think there is unfinished business between her and Tom and it would be good seeing the new assured Tom knocked off his stride a little.

Minimammoth · 05/12/2014 18:52

Top notch orthopaedics available in Birmingham for rehab. I wonder if the rob/jess divorce is not actually happening at all. I also am liking newtom. Loved yesterday's episode. go Linda.
I am also wondering about a little fanning of the flame for Emmur an Ed.

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 05/12/2014 19:16

Hurrah!

Minimammoth · 05/12/2014 19:29
