Who is going to fall off the roof!

OP posts:
Grockle · 03/01/2011 19:04

Oh, he is dead then.

I did wonder about Mummy's brooch too...

Greenshadow · 03/01/2011 19:18

What a pity.
sorry to seem him go.

PollyParanoia · 03/01/2011 19:42

Sorry about this next question, but am very occasional Archers listener and find it lovely ambient wallpaper but never really understand who's who apart from the grundys because they're the ones with the comic yokel accent (is it supposed to be funny or something?).
Anyway, my question is, why does everyone hate Helen so much?

What a missed opportunity though! Of all the plot-transforming events they could have had, and of all the people they could have got rid of - and they lose one of the more entertaining characters, leaving us with, no doubt, bitter widowed Lizzie and guilted-out David for the foreseeable.

I am considering not listening any more because you just know it's going to be so tedious for such a loooonng time.

Maybe Lizzie will find comfort, solace and perhaps eventually learn to love again in the steadfast arms of Edgar Titcombe

If Lewis does take LL, they could begin a new chapter of their lives together in a small tithed cottage beyond the kitchen garden.

EdgarAleNPie · 03/01/2011 20:48

I just couldn't bring myslf to Edgar Titcome.

just not.

lalalonglegs · 03/01/2011 20:56

Didn't Julia die some time ago so the Lewis revelation would already have been made? Also, as Nigel's wife, assuming he had made a will and left LL to Lizzie, why would she be crippled by death duties?

Am sure Nigel's death will give Lizzie the opportunity to be even more of a cow than usual.

Ponders · 03/01/2011 21:01

Lizzie might be pg you know (remember No Mercy Nigel slipping excitingly into her bed in his highwayman's outfit...)

Ponders · 03/01/2011 21:02

"Am sure Nigel's death will give Lizzie the opportunity to be even more of a cow than usual."

Agree completely, lala - Nigel was the only thing that stopped her going OTT on a regular basis (especially where David was concerned...)

It will end in tears

UnSerpentQuiCourt · 03/01/2011 21:32

Am also thinking of giving the Archers a loooong break. It will be tedious for a good while and Nigel was one of the best characters. What did he do? Ask for a pay rise?

Tolalola · 03/01/2011 22:10

I was pretty underwhelmed by the whole thing after all those months of buildup. It was just so ham-fistedly foreshadowed that it was hard to summon up any emotion about it at all. It certainly wasn't 'shocking'.

I found Nigel quite amusing, much more so than the dreadful Lizzie, and that's three quite sympathetic men they've killed off in the last year (I accept that Sid and Phil weren't by choice), leaving an increasing ratio of highly irritating women.

And the Helen storyline was a complete non-event, after all that buildup.

I've listened for ever, but I think I might give it a break. I just can't bear more tedious episodes of Helen being smug and Lizzie being cross...

Agree with those who've said it would've been much better if it had been something 'happy-shocking' or completely out of the blue.

blackeyedsusan · 03/01/2011 22:48

reshape yes I thought I heard a thud, but only on I player. our radio is not the best.

I was hoping for a strategically placed dense shrubbery or something, but no such luck.

aloiseb · 03/01/2011 23:42

Well you are a heartless lot. I have just listened to the whole 2 episodes and am still drying my eyes. These people are FRIENDS I tell you, FRIENDS.....

Chil1234 · 04/01/2011 08:56

Anyone catch dear old Graham Seed just now on Today? He may have accidentally fallen from the radio rooftop but he was definitely shafted IRL! He'll be extracting sharpish metalwork from the vertebrae for months...

BendyBob · 04/01/2011 09:00

I did! I was most amused to hear that some people are using his final scream as their new 'ringtone'Grin

rodformyownback · 04/01/2011 09:50

I'm with Tolalola, it was so so obvious that something dire was going to happen to Nige that when the event came I felt strangely cold and unmoved.

Poor Freddie is bound to fail his exams now and not get into the lahdidah school. He'll go right off the rails and feel he's let daddy down, he may even jump off the roof himself in 10 year's time.

I can't see how Lizzie would not be in line to inherit Lower Loxley though. If Mummy had left it to Nige and then Lewis we would already know about that from her will (unlikely anyway as Nige already has an heir in Freddie). If Nige didn't leave a will (again unlikely given how rolling they are) his estate will pass straight to his wife anyway.

But LL only pays for itself because of all the conferences, xmas fair etc. If Lizzie has a breakdown she won't be able to manage it and could have to sell up. But if she can pull it together I can't see why she won't manage the workload on her own. Nige hardly did anything anyway, he was always off to panto rehearsals and getting bleeding brooches polished...

ElfPantsAtMidnightMass · 04/01/2011 09:51

I heard that. Poor Nigel :( He sounded really upset, not just in a "I was sacked" way, but in a "poor old Nige" way. He was imagining Nigel as a lovely old man! Bit sad now.

Abr1de · 04/01/2011 10:36

There has been a lot of widow-making in Ambridge. Perhaps they are wiping out men.

I don't think Lizzie will inherit. It will probably be entailed on Freddie, with a proviso that Lizzie can live in the house until he is eighteen. Probably an insurance policy to cover the IHT payable as F will be liable, not being a spouse. Nigel may have been moved to change the entail so that Lily may inherit alongside her brother.

notthehippopotamus · 04/01/2011 11:06

Good to see I'm not the only one who is feeling sad about this! Sad It's spoilt the end of the holidays! Blush So unimaginative of the scriptwriters as Nigel was such a likeable, positive character among all the doom and gloom. Surely they could have done something more interesting than this and kept him in the programme. Boo hoo!

Ponders · 04/01/2011 11:09

Oh I just listened to the Today bit & am even sadder. Poor old Tim B.

VW is a clever bugger Angry; I know they are actors but they'll be missing Graham so much it'll make their grief a lot more real.

Chil1234 · 04/01/2011 11:13

There won't be any problems about inheritance but it leaves the way open for Lizzie - who didn't have a great track-record with blokes until Nicey Nigel - to have some marvellous affairs with a few gold-digging but devastatingly attractive creeps. Think about it from a succession planning point of view ie. Brian Aldridge is getting on a bit, Matt and Pussycat aren't a patch on their old selves and the producers need a moustachioed landowning bastard to pass on the baton to.

EdgarAleNPie · 04/01/2011 12:32

do you think David could be charged with manslaughter?

fruitstick · 04/01/2011 13:16

I thought that Edgar but actually I doubt it. David didn't force Nigel on the roof, or cause him to fall. Not like it was a fight or anything.

Would Freddie have to inherit. Afterall Nigel inherited from Julia so it obviously passed to her when her husband died?

More likely no life insurance.
