What would £120,000 buy where you live?

We're planning to buy an investment property this summer and have £120,000 to spend. We've been looking in the area where family live but it's commuter belt and houses are snapped up. Can you inspire me with what this would buy in your area? We live abroad so no ties in terms of area.

A 50% share to buy on a 1 bed flat if you were lucky

PettsWoodParadise · 21/06/2015 21:00

I have a few investment properties in SE London. If I had that sum in the bank I would use it as a deposit on a terraced house for a nearby ex local authority property that would cost about £280k that I could rent out for about £1,200pcm.

justicewomen · 21/06/2015 21:03

In Suffolk it would buy modern 2 bed apartment like this close to Ipswich railway station (I hr 10 to Liverpool Street) www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-49175014.html?premiumA=true

or 3 bed Victorian terrace like www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-49942228.html

Such properties very easy to rent out

Apatite1 · 21/06/2015 21:05

I live in zone 2 London. So nothing. Have you thought about using it as a deposit and getting a mortgage?

oneflewoutofthecrazynest · 21/06/2015 21:13

5 bed house on the harbour front of a fishing town in north Aberdeenshire, 3 bed house inland a bit, rural village or 1 bed flat in not a great part of Aberdeen city Smile

leccybill · 21/06/2015 21:17

Anfield

5 bed well-presented giant terrace. If only you lift it and situate it somewhere a little less stabby.

The Croft, Greencroft, Stanley, DH9
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-48405850.html

Nice detached new build, 3 bedrooms, nice garden and garage. Twenty five minutes from Newcastle city centre. Large town.

adr07 · 21/06/2015 22:07

£120k would buy TWO terrace houses. Rent would be £450 on each, £900 return per month on your £120k investment.

avocadotoast · 21/06/2015 22:33

Depends what kind of thing you want.

This terraced house has been up for sale for ages; I really like it but it was over budget when we were looking: www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-34727319.html

2 bed semi, needs work but has huge garden and garage: www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-33784452.html

2 bed apartment, gorgeous old building and huge windows: www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-33764088.html

SycamoreMum · 21/06/2015 22:40

Pfft! A garage or a studio flat which you couldn't swing a cat in.

mousmous · 21/06/2015 22:41

a deposit for an assisted living studio flat...

emwithme · 21/06/2015 23:52

one bed house or a two bed flat which would probably rent at about £500 - £550 pcm

For £80k you can get this rental about £500 pcm

For £127k (all but a smidge) you can get this which would rent for about £600 every day of the week...

drinkscabinet · 22/06/2015 00:06

I'm in Co Durham. For £120,000 you can get a 2 bedroomed flat in a nice part of town or a 3 bed semi detached anywhere else. Rental prices are low though and property prices have been static since 2007.

blueteapot · 22/06/2015 07:18

Our house! In NI. 5 bed semi detached bungalow with attic conversion, garage and a large garden. It was 100k, needed some modernisation, worth about 120 when finished

blueteapot · 22/06/2015 07:21

Ps that's in the north west NI not Antrim / Belfast direction

JustBeingJuliet · 22/06/2015 08:25

2/3 bed terrace or semi here. I'm on the Midlands. My 3 bed semi was £125k and needs work, but similar properties rent out for about £525 a month.

chaiselounger · 22/06/2015 19:55

Nothing.
I just looked on one of the houses website: nothing for less than 200k.

chaiselounger · 22/06/2015 19:57

1 bed flat £225k

MisForMumNotMaid · 22/06/2015 19:58

3 bed newbuild after negotiation or a 2 bed terrace plus a 2 bed flat.

North West.

SpecificOcean · 22/06/2015 20:03

Small 2 bed similar to our one that we rent out. Ours has always been easy to rent out.

gleegeek · 23/06/2015 10:58

Nothing on rightmove below £190,000 round here...

BBQsAreSooooOverrated · 23/06/2015 11:03

A 2 bed apartment if I increase the search radius to 3miles

IsadoraQuagmire · 23/06/2015 12:26

Nothing at all. The cheapest thing is a studio flat for £330,000.

dotdotdotmustdash · 23/06/2015 16:34

A neat little bungalow in a well-kept estate www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-52743734.html
