What would £120,000 buy where you live?

We're planning to buy an investment property this summer and have £120,000 to spend. We've been looking in the area where family live but it's commuter belt and houses are snapped up. Can you inspire me with what this would buy in your area? We live abroad so no ties in terms of area.

Absolutely nothing in South oxfordshire here.

whereismagic · 24/06/2015 21:31

Studio flat facing a cemetery wall. Truly depressing.

cashewnutty · 24/06/2015 21:32

I googled it. Nothing was the answer. I live in an expensive town on the east coast of Scotland.

Chillyegg · 24/06/2015 21:33

A three bed semi-detached

mrschatty · 24/06/2015 21:35

Something like this www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-50529001.html

We used to have a rental property here. It rented easily too. This is similar to the one we have now in size but ours is semi detached with a garage

firesidechat · 25/06/2015 08:54

I did a search from £110,000 to £130,000 and one property came up - a one bed retirement flat.

ArcheryAnnie · 25/06/2015 08:56

Just had a look, and absolutely nothing. Not even a studio flat.

thehumanjam · 25/06/2015 08:59

Nothing.

Lweji · 25/06/2015 09:14

As I am in Portugal, in a small town where prices are not that high, and maybe just coming out of a recession, either nothing (because it was in £ :) ), or a good 3 or 4 bed flat, maybe even 5 or 6, probably with a large garage and attic storage room.

Not quite enough for a house unless terraced, far from the main town, or old.

Sunnyshores · 25/06/2015 12:41

It doesnt matter what you buy for £120k if its a rental property, 1 bed flat or 4 bed house - what matters is future capital growth in that particular area and most importantly rental yield and tenant demand.

Ionone · 25/06/2015 12:50

Nothing here. There's a two bed shared ownership flat on for £212,500.

AliceAnneB · 25/06/2015 12:53

Garage. They are actually fairly good for rental income with heaps less hassle. And they rent out fast.

mackerella · 25/06/2015 12:53

In my area, there are only 4 listings under £120k on Rightmove - 2 are parcels of land for development, and 2 are houseboats! And one of the houseboats is offers over £100k Shock

My 3 bed 40s prefab (with very dated interior!) One bathroom, decent size rooms in general. Generous back garden, smaller front garden, no parking unless we converted the front lawn I guess.

...but I can see a nice sea view from our bedroom.Grin

Not the best area but mostly ex council houses owned by retirees and young couples with children for neighbours.

Iwasbornin1993 · 25/06/2015 13:04

3 bed small semi in the suburbs within the catchment of two good schools.

QueenQueenie · 25/06/2015 13:10

A garage? Maybe?

Lilymaid · 25/06/2015 13:10

Nothing in South Cambridgeshire - but you could get a one bed flat in Haverhill (20 miles out from Cambridge and cheapest place in the area).

Oliversmumsarmy · 25/06/2015 13:16

Cheapest thing is a 2 bed flat for just under £650k, and we are not in London

SomewhereIBelong · 25/06/2015 13:22

Here 2 bed semi in Gloucester, with tenant already there

lightgreenglass · 25/06/2015 15:46

A studio flat here. A grim looking one at that.,

ouryve · 25/06/2015 16:11

A good sized 3 bed terrace with tons of garden and off road parking, with change, or a smaller 3 bed detached or semi, like these.

There's parts of hartlepool and middlesbrough where you could probably buy half a street for £120K!
