What would £120,000 buy where you live?

We're planning to buy an investment property this summer and have £120,000 to spend. We've been looking in the area where family live but it's commuter belt and houses are snapped up. Can you inspire me with what this would buy in your area? We live abroad so no ties in terms of area.

Near Oxford there is one property available!

karbonfootprint · 21/06/2015 15:03

London - a patch of rough ground about big enough to park two cars on, but you would then need to apply for planning permission.

specialsubject · 21/06/2015 15:06

prices are going up here (BTL being driven by inability to get any interest on savings) but your £120k will get you a 2 bed semi in a good part of the town, or a solid ex-council 3 bed terrace in a less good but up and coming part.

will rent for about £500 max PCM depending on condition.

A static caravan

One bed retirement flats or a studio flat.

Couple of grotty 1 bed doer-uppers on the market too.

GerundTheBehemoth · 21/06/2015 15:11

A two-bedroom park home, but only if you're over 50.

HeadDreamer · 21/06/2015 15:15

One bed apartments. Like this www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-50694515.html

Should be fine as BTL.

regularrectangle · 21/06/2015 15:17

Large 3 bed semi with a drive and garden. With 13k left over.

Walnutpie · 21/06/2015 15:22

Is it so much about what it would buy, though, as rental income?

The question is, where is the highest rental available for a 120k property?

indieblack · 21/06/2015 15:32

Within a couple of miles of me (SE London) you're pretty much only looking at retirement flats in budget. There's this if you can get it nr guide price.

dementedma · 21/06/2015 15:33

3 or 4 bed ex-council or terrace with garden.

BertieBotts · 21/06/2015 15:37

Gorgeous 3-bed 16th century house with a freaking BARN, 70s decor, and this view. Shock

Rural-ish south West Germany. The pound is strong at the moment.

Where I used to live in the UK, it would get you a cramped flat, most likely 1-bed, possibly a tiny 2-bed.

What would £120,000 buy where you live?

I meant this one

I think I'm in love with it!!

Madbengalmum · 21/06/2015 15:48

1bed tiny flat

RosesandRugby · 21/06/2015 15:50

A good sized 3 bed semi/terraced with drive and gardens. Within easy reach of excellent transport links. London is only 1hr 15 mins on the fast train and Manchester about the same.

Situated very close to excellent countryside with tonnes of activities for the family (mountain biking, go ape, zoos, water sports etc)

Rental value is approximately £550 pcm

sianihedgehog · 21/06/2015 15:52

MAYBE a studio flat in Brighton.

FernGullysWoollyPully · 21/06/2015 15:54

In my town in the midlands, £120k would buy you a 2 maybe 3 bed terraced house on one side of town or a very small 2 bed semi and possibly a 1/2 bed flat on the other side of town or a sizeable chunk on a shared ownership.

Twunk · 21/06/2015 15:54

This rather nice open-plan flat. But I'm in the Netherlands Grin

A 1 bedroomed flat or a two-bedroomed mobile home. South coast.

TheGoodGoodOldDays · 21/06/2015 15:57

North Herts/Mid Beds would get you 1 bed max. Naice area it would be a studio. Not so nice area a flat.

Hulababy · 21/06/2015 15:58

You woudn't get anything for that price in my locality, but other parts of the city you would (Sheffield).

In some parts of the city you can get anything from a 1 bed flat to a 3 bed semi or terrace. There's even a couple of 4 bed semi on the current Right Move listing, though areas may not be quite what you'd be after necessarily. The areas massively hugely.

Sheffield

Other areas of the city it wouldn't buy you a one bed flat.

Very uch depends on what type of rental market you are thinking of.

mandy214 · 21/06/2015 16:01

My part of south Manchester, maybe a 1 bed retirement flat. Ordinary 1 bed flat in a not - so - nice part of town.
