What would £120,000 buy where you live?

We're planning to buy an investment property this summer and have £120,000 to spend. We've been looking in the area where family live but it's commuter belt and houses are snapped up. Can you inspire me with what this would buy in your area? We live abroad so no ties in terms of area.

On the (longish) road I live on in a village in Yorkshire it would get you a two bedroom terrace. My own house is worth about £500k and certainly isn't the most valuable house on the road. We've often contemplated a BTL here as we think the fact that there's a real mixture of housing stock means it wouldn't the issues sometimes associated with areas where all the housing is very cheap.

OpposableThumbs1 · 21/06/2015 16:08

I reckon this two bed flat is the best option nearish to me.

It's right near the station which is 43 mins in to Kings Cross (or there is one train at rush hour that is only 31 minutes).

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 21/06/2015 16:14

A garage or a 50% share in a studio flat. We're in Cambridge. It is ridiculous, like London prices.

TheCrowFromBelow · 21/06/2015 16:15

I searched with max price £120,000.. There are various fields (pasture land, no PP) or 2 retirement flats for the over 60's within 5 miles of my house.
No other houses or flats.
Prices are crazy!

TheHoundsBitch · 21/06/2015 16:19

A small static caravan or a narrow boat.

madwomanbackintheattic · 21/06/2015 16:26

Two bed static trailer or a one or two week zoned timeshare in an apartment building. Our rental market is officially at zero occupancy - people are having to leave town because they cannot afford to buy, there are no properties to rent, and yet over half of the town's housing stock is sitting empty for months on end as they are second homes used for a couple of weeks a year.

Rivercam · 21/06/2015 16:33

A one bedroom flat in my town is £130000.

Smellyoulateralligator · 21/06/2015 16:53

Just checked right move and there's nothing for that price. Depressing really

NotDavidTennant · 21/06/2015 17:02

I'm not sure why it matters what type if you're buying it as an investment - surely it's about the rental yield you can get? For instance you could by a decent-sized house for that in the South Wales valleys, but you won't rent it for much.

VolumniaDedlock · 21/06/2015 17:07

decent condition 2-bed terrace
I am in a pleasant (but unfashionable) suburb of a big city in the North with good schools, and good transport links to the city centre.

PlainHunting · 21/06/2015 17:08

Nothing.

Cheapest property for sale is £225,000.

nooyearnooname · 21/06/2015 17:09

Decent two bed flat

AbsentMindedNumpty · 21/06/2015 17:15

Because I'm in Scotland I have looked for properties "offers over" £100,000 because it is usual to offer over that price, about 20%.

These two are very local to me and a few minutes walk from a station that takes you to Glasgow/Edinburgh/Stirling etc in about 40 minutes. Really convenient. They are also in the catchment area of a very popular school, and in a low crime area.

This one is less than half a mile from same station.

Both properties are ideal if you were looking for "buy to let" investments. but I would prefer they were sold to families to live in.

irregularegular · 21/06/2015 17:17

I think you could buy a small river garden/mooring with a summer house on it. You wouldn't be able to live there though. South Oxon/Berks borders.

chickenfuckingpox · 21/06/2015 17:20

three bed house in a decent area with a conservatory

AuditAngel · 21/06/2015 17:24

A choice between 2 garages

PullMySocksUp · 21/06/2015 17:24

NotDavidTennant I'm interested in what the sort of money can buy, that's all. I'm familiar with one particular area of England but not the rest. It's actually very interesting and rental yield is not our only motivator.

ChrisQuean · 21/06/2015 17:25

It might get you 1/3 of a room, assuming a studio flat, a run down part of town and two very good friends both with £120,000 each who like things cosy. Central London.

LadyPlumpington · 21/06/2015 17:28

A 1-bed flat, possibly NOT a studio (ie a separate bedroom to living room) at that price. I'm in a city in Berkshire

BertieBotts · 21/06/2015 17:38

When I've just done a search in my local area, it's not a house, but look at the description of this absolute dive, in the shittest part of town, where the drug addicts hang out, round the corner from a strip club Grin

BertieBotts · 21/06/2015 17:39

And I know for a fact it's infested with rats as well, if they don't make enough noise behind the bar they run out into the pub Confused

thatstoast · 21/06/2015 17:40

You could have my house for 120k if you want. Or loads of other properties in South Wales.

This is a newish development, nice village, good (for the area) primary within walking distance so would attract long term family tenants. Potentially low maintenance as you're abroad.

www.rightmove.co.uk/new-homes-for-sale/property-41609141.html

Very little to rent in the area at the moment.

FishWithABicycle · 21/06/2015 17:52

You could get this in Bristol but it's a fairly depressing area, not a naice place at all. Nevertheless housing is scarce enough that you'd get a decent rental return.
